New POD HD500 volume cuts in and out with static

I just got my HD500 last week.  There were some issues, mostly related to docs missing a couple of steps here and there.

I was able to set up some custom tones and they are sounding good.

At one point on start up when testing last week I had a case where there was no, or erratic, output coupled with static.  This was not a cable problem as far as I can tell.  In that case I rebooted (power cycled) the POD and the problem went away.

I have a JT Variax connected and have the input set to the Variax.

Today after the POD had been off for a couple of days I fired it up and during the syncing with the Edit application the volume was cutting in and out with static.  That seemed to clear up after the sync completed.  But after a while it started doing it again.  Brand new VDI cable no sign of issue (e.g. wiggling the cable and connectors did not make any difference.

Finally I got a regular cable and connected from the Variax to the Guitar In on the POD and used the Edit program to change input to Guitar.  That seemed to clear it up, but there were a couple of times where it sounded like it might start cutting out again, but that passed.  Then I switched back to Variax input and there were no problems with sound cutting out or pops and static for about 30 minutes with the same tone that had problems earlier.

Note that I also tried switching tone presets earlier but that did NOT correct the problem.

Has anyone else run into this?  Could it be something to do with playing while the initial sync operation is going on with the Edit program?  Or is this an indication that something may be failing with the brand new POD?  I haven't used this on a gig yet, and really like the tones that I have set up but if it's going to cut out and produce static during performance that would not be a good thing:)

Thanks,

Burt

Thanks,  That's what I thought.  But it definitely was acting up a number of minutes later.

I haven't had a chance to try it again since then, but will be testing again tomorrow.  This time I'll try not doing anything while it is sync'ing and then will see if it behaves.
