How many here use the HD series as a pedal board only?
by dperry85 on 2013-03-16 12:49:42

Hey guys... I keep finding myself going back and forth from studio/direct + monitor to power combo setting + my egnater tweaker and only using the HD 500 as a pedal board.

Just curious how many of you guys use it with your tube amp but only have it setup as an 8-piece pedal board? Curious if you could post your setups/setlist.

Thanks and hoping to get a few replies. If any one has an egnater tweaker and pod HD definitely chime in!

tia

I use the HD500 with my Egnater Tweaker, both with the 4 cable methode and as preamp into the egnater poweramp!

Loving it!

Well most of the time I use the POD effects with my real amp in 4CM.  I have multiple patches and most of them have several of the effects switchable on footswitches.

I do use the POD modelling but that is not why I bought it.  I use the modelling to pull out a few tones that I cannot get with my Marshall JVM alone (AC30 et al) and have it setup as a backup in case I need to borrow an amp or mine fails.

mind telling me how to hook it up as preamp into the egnater power amp? i'm assuming you have the POD settings on "powercamp combo", right?

nicjw can probably be more specific but ...

Direct Connection into Power Amp

     Guitar --> HD500 In

HD500 Left 1/4" Out --> Amp FX Loop return

The Amp FX Loop Return may also be labelled as 'Power Amp In'.  Make sure that the Amp Loop is turned on.  If the loop has a switch allowing you to choose between stompbox level (-10dB) or line level (+4dB) then set it to line level.

Note:  You may (or may not) need a 'dummy' patch cable plugged into the Amp FX Send/Pre-Amp Out socket to make the loop work.  The other end of the cable is not plugged into anything.

If the amp has a 'Parallel' Loop then turn it to 100% Effected/Wet.  Some Parallel Loops (e.g. Bognor Alchemist) always have a mix between effected and uneffected signal even with the parallel loop level at 100% and these can cause problems with your tone.  Most effect loops are still 'Serial' and these tend to work better with MultiFx.

The HD setup goes

  • 1/4" Out switch = 'amp' (if the output is way to quiet then you may need to go up to to 'line')
  • Master Knob = 100% on.
  • Output = 'Combo Power Amp' or 'Stack Power Amp' as appropriate (this is found and changed in the HD System Settings)
  • Normal/Pad switch  = 'Normal' unless you hear unwanted clipping distortion then turn to 'Pad'
  • Mixer panned centre at 0dB.  Increase the volume until the level seems about right
  • If your guitar pickups are very hot and you hear 'unmusical' clipping distortion then you might want to set your input settings to Input 1 = Guitar, Input 2 = Variax

You would nearly always want to use an Amp Model turned on.  Without one the setup will sound very dead.  Start by using a 'Pre' model (listed after the full amps in the list of amps) and see how that sounds.

If you need still more boost:  try a Studio Eq effect block.  Boost the gain parameter only and this will provide a clean boost without colouring the tone.

The 4CM allows you to do both an effects only setup AND use the pod as a pre-amp as per above.  This is more complicated though.   See here for what 4CM is and why people do it and here for how do do it specifically on the Pod HD
