Variax 300 - Selector Knob - is it supposed to have an LED?
by kz1m9w on 2013-03-23 13:01:28

Hi as I am awaiting being able to get my hands on a JTV-89F, I picked up a used Variax 300 (electric).

I am unsure of one aspect related to the Variax 300 and so far, have been unable to figure it out.

There is a tiny hole (obviously intentional) just north of the "selector knob".  It is located in a spot that indicates the selected model.  And it appears to simply be a hole on my guitar.  But I was wondering if it is perhaps intended to have a tiny LED in it.  Some photos I've seen on the web look like it is a tiny LED.  Others look like an empty hole.  Some make it look like it is just a dome shaped tiny piece of metal.   And still others look like there is no such thing (as far as I can tell).

So, can someone tell me definitively what it is supposed to be (i.e. if it was new)?

Thank you in advance for any tips here.

Randy

Thanks for the scoop there.  The hole in mine (and some of the ones I've seen in photos on the web) seem to be clear that it is intentionally placed there (same place, uniformaly drilled, etc..).

So, maybe it was a variation based on the "run" or factory variance.

Curious to know - on your 300, how did you know what the setting was set to?  Was there nothing to indicate the model selected based on where the dial was turned?

Anxious to hear from anyone else.  Particularly if anybody does have an LED there.  Just wanting to ensure I'm not missing something that might have been modified, removed, popped out, etc..

Again - thank you!

No LED. There should be a small metal dome that acts as the selector's selection point. It must have popped out of your one.

well   theres an internal stop   so  i just counted  clicks.. i used  to keep a copy of the  chart inthe  guitar case.  so i  knew  by that and how  many clicks  where i was.

Thank you all - this was very helpful.

I'll take off the pickguard when I get the chance and see if I can find a little metal dome that would protrude from out of that hole.  If not, I'll make something that does.

Again - much appreciated.

you can see in this  photo  of a 600  that there  is supposed to be a  brass  pointer  dot   on that pick guard.  my 300 did  not  have this  or  the  hole for  it  as i said  so i would  guess that the  pickguard  on mine  was a  replacement.

i found this  pic  on an old  hard drive..

i dont  know if you have these   but they are  handy  print them  so they fill a page   and   then laminate the   two model charts  together   . i keep this  in my guitar case. the  chart is   to log  changes  you  make  to  the original program. also  if you  dont have the   original  owners  manual  i have it  as an adobe  doucment  saved  on  a hard drive.  pm  me your  email and i  send  it to you.  i dont think any of this  stuff is  still on this web site  anymore.. everything seems to be  for the  jtv only.  you should be able to cut these  out  and   print them  individually

Update - maybe this will help someone going forward...

I took off my pickguard today.  For the little mystery hole discussed in this thread, it did not contain any metal dome or anything like that.  It was actually sealed with what looked like a glob of glue or epoxy.  From what I could tell, it came from the factory that way as I don't think this guitar had ever been opened up.  So, my assumption is that on my guitar, it is an intentional hole, sealed with some type of glue and used to mark the model knob setting.

And if anyone is curious, part of the motive was so that I could replace my white factory pickguard with a black/red/black one.  It was not an exact perfect fit - some of the holes were just a little bit off and I had to enlarge the selector knob hole so that knob turned smoothly - but it was close enough to not need a lot of help.  It did not come with the "mystery hole", so I drilled one myself.  I mounted a red LED in it (not functional, just cosmetic).  I like the way it is a little easier to see since it protrudes just a bit.
