crackling with UX2 (1 second pulse)
by theangus on 2013-04-17 01:29:56

I've been using Sonar (X1 Essential) and have been having some fun creating little backing tracks for me to jam along with on my guitar. For this I've been using an internal sound card, an Audiophile 2496.

The problem that I can't solve is when I try to record my guitar through my Line 6 UX2 - the clicking/glitching becomes unbearable when Sonar is running.

I have tried the following:

disabling antivirus software

disconnecting pc from internet

making UX2 the default soundcard

increasing priorities of UX2 (Podfarm) and Sonar in Task Manger

Jedi persuasion/Bene Gesserit voice techniques

I noticed yesterday afternoon, that when I played a sustained note, the glitching sound (bit like radio interference) was pulsing in very regularly at approximately 1 second intervals. Does this suggest anything?

That's about it - Task manager suggests nothing is hogging resources. I would really appreciate some advice, so I can get stuck into Sonar and hopefully start making some music.

Thanks.

I'm running XP SP3 with an AMD Phenom II x4 3.4 GHz with 4 GB memory

check for and remove any amd usb filters in the control panel...

i suspect its something usb that's interupting...

maybe try different ports?

update usb connected software suck as mouse etc...

try unplugged any other usb devices...

+1 to Zap.

Definitely sounds like a USB interruption.

There's a bunch of stuff here as well to try.

Thanks guys, I have had a bit of a play around with it. Can't seen any offending/conflicting software, I've tried changing ports etc.

I also found that if I make the UX2 my default sound device, it won't even play an .mp3 without a bunch of crackle. The same .mp3 plays fine with my other soundcard.

Maybe (as that article suggested) a pci usb card?

Thanks.

i would get a free utility called slimdrivers and make sure that all your chipset drivers etc are up to date.

https://www.slimwareutilities.com/slimdrivers.php

also wouldn't hurt to run this utility to see if its a usb issue:

http://www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml

i'verun it with the task manager opened to try and identify what might be causing it...

Hi again, and thanks for the help. I downloaded the latency check tool, and ran it. While the UX2 was connected it said I would get problems, and when it was disconnected it said I wouldn't.

You are then meant to disable various likely devices in the device manager to isolate the problem.

Being a bit of an idiot I disabled my USB and spent the last couple of hours trying to reboot my pc without a working keyboard or mouse.

If anybody else has this problem I was able to plug in a ps2 mouse, go into safe mode, and access the device manager again. Phew - still feeling very foolish.

Anyway, as I understand it, the latency check tool is suggesting I have a problem. Any ideas what I should do next?

Cheers.

either find better device drivers or try an addon usb card

did adjusting the latency help?

and as Zap suggesting, make sure you update all your drivers, USB, Chipset, Video, ect...
