Stop looper and switch preset at same time
by njpaul on 2013-04-17 17:30:24

Hi everyone,

I have a POD HD Pro and the FBV Shortboard MkII. I'd like record a part with the looper using preset A, then switch to preset B to play a part over the top. So far, so good. The problem is that once I'm done playing the second part, which is not itself a loop, I need to be able to simultaneously stop the looper and switch back to preset A. Is this possible? Thanks.

Simultaneously? No, not possible. You need fast, fancy footwork to use the Looper effectively in a live setting. Assuming presets A and B are in the same bank, it involves four foot-taps from the completion of the second part after activating Preset B:

1) Activate the Looper by tapping the Looper footswitch

2) Hit the Looper STOP PLAYBACK footswitch

3) Deactivate the Looper by tapping the Looper footsweitch again

4) Hit the A footswitch to return to preset A

Note that you can save some time by performing the first step before the end of the second part, but you still need several very quick and accurate taps. That's why many users (myself included) have come to the conclusion that the Pod HD Looper is a handy jamming, practice and composition tool but is not very useful as a live-play looper. A dedicated Loop Station pedal is a better option.

Having said all that, I confess that I haven't explored the possibility of using an external MIDI controller to send the necessary multiple midi commands to the HD500 to do the above in sequence.

Thanks, that's what I figured. This was a "would be nice to have" thing for me, but isn't critical to what I do live. Actually this is the first time for me where it would've been nice to use a looper. I can get by without, and if more situations come up, I'll think about using an external midi controller.

It should be easier with an external midi pedal.  Even if it can't be done "simultaneously," it should be possible to do it digitally fast.  Provided the looper responds to midi signales - I haven't actually looked into this.
