JTV-89F string buzz and truss rod adjust help
by stos2 on 2013-04-18 19:34:20

Recently rec'd my JTV-89F and am doing a lot of "getting adjusted".  I bought from Sweetwater, due in part to their 50-some point setup.  The strings that came with the guitar seemed too heavy, so I put on a pair of 9's.  I then got terrible string buzz, to a point where the sound of the guitar gave me that broken speaker buzzing.  The buzzing was on the hi E and lo E strings.  The guitar was not playable.  I raised the bridge, and it helped, but it still doesn't sound good, and now the action is higher than I like.

Now the part that concerns me ...

My next step would be to look at neck relief and truss rod adjustment.  Using my Stewmac strait edge, the next was real flat.  Almost no relief at all.  So I thought I would loosen the truss rod to give a little relief.  None of the allen wrenches that came with the guitar seemed to fit the truss rod.  I looked closely into the trussrod hole on the headstock, and I don't see an allen head pattern on the nut.  It is just a round cavity in what appears to be the truss rod nut.  It almost looks really stripped or rounded.

Can someone tell me if I'm missing something here?  I'm in a panic wondering if I got a damaged guitar.  How good is Sweetwater to work with on stuff like this?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Dave

I had some string buzz issues when I first got the guitar but I raised the bridge primarily on the low E side and the problem was solved.  I have not looked at the trussrod yet and will do that when I get home.  Where is the buzzing happening?  Close to the nut?

It seems like the buzzing is coming from near the nut.  I raised the bridge, but it still buzzes too much for me.  I'm really concerned about the truss rod.  If you check, can you tell me which wrench (from the ones that came with the guitar) fits your truss rod nut?

Thanks for the help.

Largest wrench seems to fit, how far did you raise the trem?  If the neck is straight your truss is fine.  I would bring it to a luthier you trust unless you are very confident in working with the truss.  In the past I have also shimmed the nut slightly.

I contacted Sweetwater, and they are going to replace it.  Sounds like there have been other JTV-89F guitars with a stripped truss rod nut.  Hope the new one sounds better.  Thx again for the input.

There is probably nothing wrong with you guitar just the setup.  When you change string gauge it changes the dynamics of the setup.  You will need to have the guitar setup with the new strings.  Search the web for guitar setup instruction and you should find some instruction that may help you. http://www.fender.com/support/articles/fender-guitar-setup-guide/

There is an order to the changes that you need to make to the bridge height adjustment, bridge length adjustment and the trust rod adjustment.  Any time you change strings manufacture and / or gauge you should check the setup. Once you get the strings that you like, stay with them.

The information above may not be current, and you should direct questions to the current forum or review the manual.
