POD xt will not turn on.
by ProvidenceG on 2009-08-30 05:51:03

I bought my PODxt as a floor model from the Guitar center here in Greenville SC over a year ago.  Recently within the past 6 months in the middle of a practice session it would just cut off.  I would just flip the power switch and it would come right back on.  Our practice sessions only lasted about 2 hrs.  A month ago I bought a new Line 6 power supply thinking that might be the issue.  I plugged it in and it worked for a little while (about 3 hours) then it cut off and will not come back on at all.  I looked on the support sight for a service shop and the closest one is 140 miles away.  What can I do?

When you say "cut off"!  Do you mean no lights on at all?

If so? I´m thinking its your actual power switch, that needs to be looked at, and replaced if found faulty!

But I would also meter the Power supply to rule that out!  And if it´s intermitant, you need to wiggle your wires & connection to know if it cuts out due to a broken wire in the covering!

When it cut off that was it.  It won't do anything.  I tried wiggling the power cable like you said and that did not work.  It does not turn on with either power cable.

I actually said to Meter & wiggle the cable! so you will know if the Power supply is the culprit!

I metered the cable and it is fine.

Ok!

How are you at electrical things?  Skill wise? Do you feel confident to open up the Pod? Is it still under warrantee?

Because to determine if the switch is the problem you will need to get to it from the inside, then use a short piece of covered wire & short out the 2 terminals on the switch! Then Plug in the power supply! If the Pod turns on, then you know the switch needs to be replaced, and you can most likely find that Part locally!  But if the POD does not turn on then its something more complicated, and you will need to follow the path of the input power to find the "Break"

Hi,

If you are getting no power what so ever, then I would need to direct you to a service center especially since you have tried two power supplies with it. If you are comfortable trying some of the fixes our end user may provide, do so at your own risk - we cannot provide support on that.

Thanks

I jumped the switch and that was it.  It came right on.  So where and how can I get a new switch?

Now the Fun!

The Part is called a Rocker switch!

http://www.globalsources.com/manufacturers/Rocker-Switch.html

Thelink will show what you will find online!

Thats IMO is where you start! Just so you can call around locally and see what they have in stock! If you find a store that have a good supply of various types, then just bring your Pod Over and see if they can match it!

If you can see any specs on the one in the Pod! Usually will be a Voltage and a Amp rating! This will help narrow down the posibilities!

I have checked your link and looked locally and I connot find a swith that 1. Is the correct size and 2. Is designed to fit in to the circuit board like the original switch.  Is there no one at line 6 I can call and get this part serviced directly from them?

Just for the record, I went and jumped the switch posts on my dead xt and boom - starts up like a charm. I already bought a new one though so now I have a backup.

ProvidenceG. Just a suggestion to save a lot of hassle. Could you leave the switch permanently jumped by soldering a piece of wire over the terminals: then switch it on and off at the mains. I never use the switch on mine. I have all my equipment connected to a single distribution point so that I can switch them all on/off together. Maybe it's not good practice, but I've had no problems.

That's a good question and I made the assumption that it would be ok since I can't be bothered with the overhead of finding, purchasing and installing a new one:

But yeah, is there a problem with just using the power strip?

Mine died today... but because of you guys it's back (but who knows for how long).  I didn't take the switch out because that would be more work, but I jumped the posts and it works fine.  I'm really not happy with Line 6 products thus far but I spent way too much money to just throw this out in the recycling bin.  Thanks for all the posts.
