LD400 Pro - Power output question
by ReplicantDave on 2010-03-23 08:00:25

The FAQ section confirms that an 8 ohm external cab can be connected to the LD400 Pro, it does not mute the internal speakers and it is in fact connected in parallel with the internal speakers.

Another FAQ confirms that the LD400 puts out the full 400 watts to its 2 X 10" speakers.

These two answers do not seem compatible. If the power amp is designed to deliver its maximum power into its internal speakers, what is the effect of plugging in an external cab?

Assuming the internal speakers constitute an 8 ohm load, plugging in an external 8 ohm cab will reduce the total load to 4 ohms and you would expect the amp to deliver more power into this.

So, the question is this: If the power amp is designed to work down to 4 ohms, how can it deliver its maximum power into 8 ohms?

Hello,

We have looked into your situation and corrected the FAQs. Here are the updates:

Q: Does connecting an external cab to the LowDown 400 Pro mute the internal combo speakers?

A: No, connecting an external cab DOES NOT mute the internal speakers. So, the combo speakers will produce audio along with the external cabinet speakers.

Q: Does the built in head unit of the LD400Pro have the same exact electronics & power output as the separate HD400 head unit (both have the identical preamp & power amp sections)?

A: Yes

Q: Does the LD400 put out the full 400 watts to its 2 X 10" speakers?

A: yes because we chose speakers that create a 4 ohm load internally.

Q: Is the 'Extension Speaker Output' on the LD400 in parallel or in series to the 2X10 internal speakers of the unit?

A: The extension cabinet is parallel, with an 8 ohm cabinet the amp will output approximately 650 watts.

I'm afraid I'm still finding anomalies in the FAQs for the LD400 Pro/ HD400

Your reply states that the internal speakers in the LD400Pro is 4ohms, yet in this FAQ they are stated as 8ohms: http://line6.com/community/thread/19475

You say that an external 8ohm speaker can be connected in parallel with the internal 4ohm speakers - this would give a total impedance of 2.7ohms

You state that the power amp is the same in the LD400 and the HD400 but another FAQ says the min permissable load for the HD400 is 4ohms:

Can you please explain??
