Midi out problem as with earlier version.
by Tokaiboy on 2010-08-03 08:51:05

I've just installed Vyzex 1.17 after uninstalling an earlier version. Getting the message "Can't open Midi Out Port USB Audio Device. Driver may already be in use" - then software fails to run.

I went through the motions of editing the registry as in the troubleshooting instructions and it was then that I realised I'd already done that a couple of years ago to get the earlier version running... so now what?

I'm using Windows XP Home.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received!

The USB MIDI driver supplied with Windows (XP, Vista and even Win7) is single-client which means any other music software you are run will compete with the editor for the PocketPOD MIDI Port. Are you running any other MIDI port using software while trying to run the editor?

Let us know...

No, I'm not running any other MIDI devices or software.

Everything is set up in exactly the same way as when I was successfully running the previous Vyzex version the other day.

Have you tried rebooting your computer? If the USB MIDI port is locked or hung at the OS level, this is the only way to clear it.

If that doesn't work, run the uninstall routine and reinstall the editor.

Let us know how it goes.

No, the computer hasn't been rebooted since I tried to use the software for the first time today, although it has been rebooted since installation. I'll get back to you and let you know what happens. I'll also run my registry cleaner in case anything is left over from the previous installation which may be causing a problem.

Many thanks for your help.

I've tried all that and I still have the same problem. I even tried re-installing version 1.10 which, regardless of its quirks, would at least allow me to get on with the job. Now that's coming up with the same error message, so I've actually taken a big step back rather than one forward as I'd hoped. I must say, in all my years working with software programs, I've never had one that's caused so many problems and wasted so much of my time.

The fact that the earlier version also encountered MIDI port issues on your system indicates a hardware issue with either your computer or the PocketPod. If you want to blame the editor software for being unable to open the port feel free, but you'd be on the wrong track with this conclusion.

1. Try other MIDI ports on your computer

2. Try another USB MIDI cable with your PocketPOD

3. Try the software on another computer

Let us know how it goes.

Another thought here - Perhaps your computer has a software or device MIDI port unrelated to the PocketPOD installed that is causing the software to have issues because it won't open: Do you have any other MIDI devices connected to your PC or software drivers like Hubi's loopback installed?

If so then the odds are the last time you had these problems the solution explained for you was to manually configure the PocketPOD editor not to open all MIDI ports on launch and to set up the MIDI In and MIDI Out ports manually. If this was the case and you decided to upgrade to the newer software version those custom settings would have been wiped out allowing the other devices on your system to interfere with the editor's autosensing routine again. The final piece of the problem would be you forgetting what the solution was the first time and simply assuming the software was buggy: Re-installing the older version would not restore your old custom settings and the problem would persist.

So, why not try reinstalling the newest version and follow the steps in the preferences guide to configure the program not to open all your computer's MIDI ports on launch (the MIDI->MIDI In Ports... dialog and MIDI->MIDI Out Ports... dialog are where the check boxes can be found for these options). Manually select the PocketPOD ports from these dialogs and restart the program.

Let us know how it goes.

My original problem was resolved after installing a later version of the Vyzex editor. This was the only variable, so that is why I draw the conclusion it is a software problem or that the software is not being accommodating with regard to the operating system. I also run the Magicstomp software (not at the same time!) without any problem.

I can assure you that the USB cable is working fine - too much for coincidence that it has just started malfunctioning since I've installed the latest version of the Vyzex editor.

I could try another computer - but I want it to work with this (well maintained) one.

I'll try other MIDI ports and hope for a solution.

Also try my last recommendation regarding the MIDI preferences of the program.

I'm now up-and-running, thanks Tony.

Configuring it not to open all MIDI ports at launch was the solution, then the USB device finally appeared as an option and the software fully launched.

One problem worth mentioning for others in a similar position, is that initially I couldn't even get to the point where I could configure the MIDI ports because the software wouldn't even begin to load. Then I tried it without the Pocket Pod connected and this allowed me to get far enough.

I think it would be a good idea to add this configuration tip to the troubleshooting PDF - I certainly won't forget it the next time I update!

I am happy to hear we figured it out and you are back in business.

Those are good suggestions regarding the troubleshooting PDF: I'll have to arrange for it to get updated.

Cheers,

Tony

Thanks Tony,

I must say that, as I was configuring the MIDI ports, I had a slight deja vu moment! Your theory that this was the solution I'd forgotten from the first time around could very well be correct. I'd obviously tried the registry changes the first time around and that hadn't solved it.

Either way, your persistence and speed when ironing out the problems is very much appreciated!

All the best,

Chris
