Why HD500 can't read HD400 or HD300 patch ??
by echirouze on 2010-10-19 15:19:23

I don't undestand why the 3 new HD Pods are uncompatible...logicaly the best can do the what the smaller can do, so wht the software editor don't have compatibility with the POD300 and 400 patch??

how bizarre

Hi,

The internal signal processing architecture is different from unit to unit. I understand that from an user's point-of-view you might feel that an HD500 would be capable of translating sounds from the 400 and 300, but unfortunately this isn't the case.

It's actually the reason why there are dedicated editors for each hardware model. Based on experiences from older products, a program like GearBox was able to connect to say, a POD Studio GX or POD X3 Live or PODxt, etc. but in reality many users would then be extremely confused when they experienced issues like: downloading a (.l6t) patch created on "Device A" but ultimately experiencing translation issues on "Device C" which couldn't read some of the patch data correctly.

Sorry. This is the way our product developers chose to design the HD series product.

Regards,

L6Perry

it makes sense to me. I just wish there was a simple way to export the settings "data" for in a text file or something for those of who might want to recreate a tone from one of the other units...i WANT feardse's (sp?) metal patches but can't load them with the HD500.

Yes.  I agree that it would be good to have some kind of 'export to...' and 'import from...' features in the editor, but for now at least it's not possible.  What is possible however is to run all the editors side by side in off-line mode if you wish.  This means you can download HD400 or HD300 presets into their respective editors and see how the preset has been set up.  You can then copy the settings manually into the HD500 editor and save a usable preset.  I did this with Glenn Delaune's HD400 presets which I think are excellent BTW, to try them out on the HD500 and they sound great.

Eric

Yes.  That's right.  Just open HD400 Edit in off-line mode and load up any HD400 patches you've downloaded from Custom Tone or wherever, then open HD500 Edit with the HD500 connected as normal, find an empty preset and simply copy the settings from HD400 Edit into the empty preset in HD500 Edit.  The editors do look slightly different and some of the FX settings are shown differently in the two editors, but it's not rocket science LOL to work out what you need to do.

by Rowbi on 2010-10-20 01:21:46

in all honesty, i can understand that the PODs are a different architecture, and have different effects, but as the amp models are said to be the same, and most of the FX are the same for all 3 models, I think it's a good question to ask "why can't I swap tones".

I'm going to put in a feature request asking for:

Could we have either the ability to import patches using POD HD edit for each model (300/400/500), or for a seperate converter utility where you can batch process a bundle or single patches to convert from any of the 3 POD HD edit formats to output as any of the 3 POD HD edit formats... with an option to either replace FX that aren't available in the target POD HD with something similar, or to remove FX from the patches if the target POD doesn't have the FX that are in the source patch(es)

anyone else want it... feel free to copy the text and put in your own request here: http://line6.com/company/contact/productfeedback/

Cheers

Rowbi

it's done...

for the editors, it's working well.

Good idea that falls in line with another feature request i submitted to be able to save amp settings, and FX Settings as a specific "Block" that can be loaded into the tone files.

I will try the HD400 editor and HD500 idea for now, but it would be nice to have the ability to share those amp settings in the future

I just looked for this topic and found this thread.

One question to make sure: I can just install all the HD300 and HD400 Edit software (I already have HD500 installed) and use them offline to manually copy patch settings? They won't interfere witch each other?

Hi Lars

Yes that's exactly right - you can use any of the HD editors in off-line mode

This sounds like the kind of thing some smart hobbyist programmer with lots of free time would make for fun... that would be a really interesting project to reverse-engineer the patch format. I wouldn't count on it coming from Line 6, though.

Did I hear an offer there? Go for it!

hi!

You have mainly two options.

1) You can try out my new translator: http://www.jzab.de/content/pod-hd#hd300">http://www.jzab.de/content/pod-hd#hd300">http://www.jzab.de/content/pod-hd#hd300

It does exactly what you want, i hope. I've put up a sample run with images, so you can see what it does. I've just added HD 400 Support (files don't differ from HD 300). If you find any bugs, please let me know =). I'm sure it's not 100% polished now, but should run. You still need a Java Runtime yet.

2) You're goin to download the "HD 500 Edit Software" from the line6 page and install it. You can open the HD 500 Preset in it without connecting one. There you see the settings from that preset and you can try to manually translate your desired effects and amp settings directly in your POD or that related Edit software.

Update: Now as Windows Application!

looks like awesome work there!  is there any documentation on this project that you care to make publicly available, particularly the encoding scheme line 6 is using to encode the chain layout, selected models, and parameter settings?

by johanneszab on 2012-08-17 16:55:45

hi!

Thanks for your comment. I've done my own notes during all that, but there is now clear documentation yet!

Most likely i'll release the source code after i've done some cleain. The source is a bit messy right now . Maybe some else is interessted in doing an HD 300/400 to HD 500 translator and an integrated upload/search option or some oter fancy stuff. So we can store the configurations off all the pods in one universal container - the HD 500 custometone page

Hi echirouze,

I own HD400 and I have loaded my HD400 with HD300 patches. I did this by first opening the HD300 patches ( .h3e ) on HD400 Edit and then saving it to .h4e and finally sending it to my HD400. And it worked. Don't know about HD500. Try it.

Thank you,

you could have saved alot of effort by just dragging the h3e files and dropping them directly into the position you want to send them in the hd400 edit window.
