OK TIME FOR SOME TONE REQUESTS!
by beteasta351 on 2010-11-10 14:49:08

Ok guys, i think i've gotten totally familiarized with how the machine (POD HD500) works, in terms of effects and amp modelling of course. It seems that even though there are less amp models, for now, the 8 microphone options instead of 4 on the X3 actually fills in a lot of the "blanks" for the POD HDxxx. As a matter of fact, without those extra microphones like the 409 Dynamic, 87 condenser, and the 4038 Ribbon, this machine would probably be 50% less versatile. So good job Line 6 for these new microphones! YEAH! =)

Anyways, the real point of this message is to actually ask anyone if they have any requests for tones, song specific, band specific, style specific, or anything. I'de love to hear from you all, make some great tones, and hopefully post some stuff on youtube. So let out those suggestions!

How about dialing in Warren Haynes of Gov't Mule?  A nice clean with Leslie (Diaz),  a crunch with Leslie (Driven Diaz I think),  a soldano-ish Lead (SLO100 - miss that on the HD's ),  and a nice auto-wah Soldano Lead.

I've been working on that recently and would love to see what you come up with......

Four tones....

I would like to see a tone from Michael Romeo of Symphony X A tight high gain tone.

Re: OK TIME FOR SOME TONE REQUESTS!
by ChaosNone on 2010-11-11 08:34:49

I have been trying for quite sometime now and still haven't even gotten close.  But if you would like a go, my requested tone would be: Andy Timmons, Beware Dark Days off of the Resolutions albumn.  There is heavy and then a clean with tube satch over it.  Some seriously killer tone going on there.  The has several videos on youtube, showing his rig, and where he talked about some of the equipment that he used when recording.  So if you can nail that you would be a Tone Grandmaster.

And I am using an Ibby JS1200, so you have the Basswood body, and Rosewood neck, with the Dimarzio for reference.  I have been trying to get it with the J45, but I can't get that singing tone with the nice breakup.  I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

How about Eric Clapton's 'woman tone' from the Beano album?

Classic, or what?

Eric Johnson  --   Clean Rhythm with Chorus and Memory Man.   I know, I know, just not possible to get Eric Johnson tones unless you ARE Eric Johnson.  God knows I tried in earlier versions of the POD product.  While I am awaiting my HD500, get this all figured out for me, beteasta.  LOL.

BTW -- these videos, for those that haven't seen them --- are the very shy and humble Eric actually taking you through his amps, effects and guitars.  It's all relative and subjective, but the tones in the first few minutes of the first video might be the best sounding guitar on the planet.

Order's Up!!! Here's my Andy Timmons ~ Beware Dark Days Tone

OK, heres how it works...

So basically when the expression pedal is on EXP-1, it reacts as a normal volume pedal, fair enough, everyone needs one right? Now when its on EXP-1, you get that sort of saturated heavier Timmon's tone like from the beginning of his song (and the first half of my recording, i used my bridge position pickup). Now, when you press down and engage EXP-2 (TWO), then all you have to do is pull back the EXP pedal (as if you turned down the volume) and it will adjust the amp and screamer settings. This will also disengage the classic distortion and the Red Comp and turn on the Blue comp with Treb switch. When the EXP-2 pedal (toes up, heel down position, as i said) is in this position, you get that cleaner but still broken up tone from like the middle solo in his song, or in the second half of my recording, i used the middle position of my two pickups(between neck and bridge).

So there you go... My Best shot at that Andy Timmons tone (hes an awesome player BTW!), disregard my playing in the recording i just made it to demonstrate the tone and all, i wasn't really trying to play in his style, just some stuff from Beware Dark Days, and some blues soloing. Also, it might need some tweaking as the guitar i used is very much like a single coil (even though its a humbucker) so if you dont have a single coil, you might want to take some mids away from the amp model, but try it out first.

Have fun.

P.S. I am not fulfilling your requests in any particular order, next I'll be working on that Symphony X tone, the Eric Johnson tone, Eric Clapton, i'll get to them. THANKS GUYS FOR PUTTING IN YOUR REQUESTS!

Beteasta! You ROCK for smithing some tones for us - hey are you going to also post them in the CustomTones library here on the L6 site? Hope so!

Here's a list from me and some of my other players (who are now beginning to check out the HD 400 and 500 - don't own one yet, but we are demo'ing 2 of them):

SECULAR

Rolling Stones:

"Satisfaction" main riff (there's one out there in the CustomTones library now, but it's not really correct).

"Honky Tonk Woman" main riff (Keith Richards Tele with a humbucker)

  "Brown Sugar" main guitar riff

Beatles:

"Hard Day's Night" big reverb intro chord

"Let it Be" Lead tone with Leslie

James Gang:

"Funk 49" is harder to nail down that it appears.

  "Walk Away"

U2:

  Streets Have No Name

CHRISTIAN

Really Good Lincoln Brewster Lead Tone (Today is the Day)

Mighty to Save (Hillsong United) Intro Riff - played on a Gretsch DuoJet, but we play it on Strats and Anderson Cobras - Chimey

Your Grace is Enough (Tomlin) - Main Intro Riff - Check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtnE_e1LylY

I better stop now or I'll put every song we do in here! Our first pick would be a solid tone for Satisfaction if we had to pick only one.

Thanks in advance!

Re: OK TIME FOR SOME TONE REQUESTS!

OK... SO.. i spent a lot of time crafting this tone of the distorted section for Cliffs of Dover when i saw that you wanted his clean tone with some chorus and the memory man. So i didnt wanna just waste this fairly decent EJ distorted tone so im posting it and i also put a few more hours (Not really hours) into making his clean tone.
For the distorted tone... I used an "unconventional plexi" setup... instead of running the Plexi45 into  its original cab, i just couldnt find the right voicing for his sweet tone on that cab (the Greenback) even though thats what he uses. Anyways, i messed around with some other cabs and stumbled across some tasty sounds with the 2x12 Blackface Dbl cab. Strange combo, but it worked for me. The FS1 button switches between two different "types" of tones. When the FS1 is off, you get a more scooped Fuzz Face sound, decent for his heavy rhythms (not his crunch, a little heavier) Then, when FS1 is engaged, you get a different Fuzz Face (more mids and treble) with a screamer in front of it. Guys, dont questino how my mind works, but there IS a method to my madness! Try playing around with the presence setting (PRESENCE ONLY NOT TREBLE) on the Plexi45 amp for the distorted tone to adjust it to your guitar's pickup response. HAVE FUN! (the tone i used in the recording is with the Footswitch 1 ON, not off..., so the screamer and 2nd Fuzz face is engaged).

Now for the clean tone, i really dont think i did a great job on this one, just take a listen and then try the patches. You are right though, EJ's tones are soo hard to acquire, especially with modellers. Nothing special bout the clean tone, just some delay, chorus, double end comp (i love doing that). Also, its particularly hard because i dont have his guitar, nor do i even have a fender single coil (or any fenders at all) but the guitar i used has humbuckers very close to singles, so i gave it a shot. (sadly, i think anyone couldve made this clean tone, sorry for the let down, but give it a go wont you?)

OK GUYS, order's up on tone number 2, ERIC JOHNSON, what's next??????

Re: OK TIME FOR SOME TONE REQUESTS!
by ncockerill on 2010-11-15 07:25:53

THANKS SO MUCH, beteasta !!!!

I think this was a very valiant effort (better than ANY I have managed in hours of tweaking!!).  I know that it is an unfair request to expect Eric Johnson tones, and really thought you would blow by that request.  But this is definitely the best EJ dist patch that I've heard on a POD.  I'll tweak to my main guitar --- like you, I don't have a Strat ---- part of the problem --- but I can usually get my PRS Custom 24 to sound pretty close to a Strat.

BTW -- think you are being a bit hard on yourself regarding the clean patch.  It's really quite good and will definitely become one of my most used patches for EJ, and more.

Again -- thanks very much.  You must really enjoy the process.  I feel like a schlep pawning off the hard work to more capable tone tweakers.  But you asked..........

Cheers!!!!!

Re: OK TIME FOR SOME TONE REQUESTS!
by beteasta351 on 2010-11-15 12:33:14

Dude, no problem at all. As a matter of fact, I enjoy it a lot you know why? It helps me get to know my POD HD500 a little more each time I make a tone for you guys (like who would have used that fender cab with the Plexi?) Also, I just love when I made someone happy with a tone I made. Do you have any suggestions? I plan to make about 1-2 tones a day, so ill hopefully have everyone's request done in a week or so.

PS - You are definitely not pawning off my hard work, ide be glad to make anything else you request (ill try =))) And yes, i did ask for it ;]

Re: OK TIME FOR SOME TONE REQUESTS!
by ncockerill on 2010-11-15 13:06:58

Okay beteasta, given the obligatory and very respectful "you asked for it".........

A couple of tones built around George Lynch. Preferably the tones he got on Dokken's Back for the Attack or Lynch Mob's Wicked Sensation album. His clean tones are captured by almost any Metal Clean patch, so no help needed there.  And his straight rhythm stuff isn't too tough to capture (though I'd be interested if you want to give one a shot), but surely his lead tone is very unique.  I actually have an ESP Skulls and Snakes Limited Edition signed by George himself -- so that axe is certainly capable.

I know, I know.  Eric Johnson to George Lynch........let's just say my tastes have been milder as I get older.  But I grew up with Lynch as my God.

Order in..........

Thanks because im not entirely sure what kind of sound you want me to model. Pick out any video though and ill give it my best.

Sorry guys ive been working on a bunch of other tones too, so you arent being left out, i think i bit off more than i can chew with this whole tone request thing, but i promise ill get to everyone, its definitely a lotta fun for me so dont worry

Ok man i used this song but i only got the clean tone his slightly broken tone is a little harder but ill do that one too soon, ide like to see what you came up with too cuz this tone is interesting (simple sounding but not easy to recreate cuz the harmonics in the distortion arent really definite. Thats the way i make tones really, i listen for certain harmonic distortion qualities that certain amps produce from certain records and try to match it on the POD HD (sounds complicated but its really not) Most of the easy tones are the heavily saturated ones because they harmonic distortion properties arent definite. This guy's tone is indeed sweet and interesting ill try again when im not so tired. Also, can you send me a link to a song where he uses the Soldano?

Ok ive got a fairly good clean tone from Operation: Mindcrime, a pretty tasty lead tone from Empire, and a Prog 80s Rhythm (you know, not that scooped sound like the late 90s and all that really heavy metal). The Rhythm tone is the last one is the demonstration he lead is second and the clean is first.

ENJOY!

I used the Bogner Uber model for the distorted by the way, someone in this thread asked for the Bogner's voicing capability? This isnt all the Bogner can do, oh it can dooo sooo much more with all the cab and mic choices, its a very versatile amp.

Ok, so i got some Michael Romeo High Gain tight dist tones for you. (Symphony X)

In this patch, you can switch between two amps, the Engl and the Treadplate by pressing on the FS1. The Engl demonstrates Symphony X's older sound, it was more smooth. The Treadplate demonstrates their Modern Sound, more "metal" and new sounding. Just my opinion.

Have FUN!

Tell me now man if your unhappy with the tones, they didn't take long to make, and if your unhappy, ide love to remake them, just give me the type of gear your use (guitars, speakers OR amps, all that stuff) I use monitors, not amps, because Full Range monitors dont really have any specific "sound colour," whereas amps have their own vibe, of course ive tried this thing with a few amps and its still great, but for these purposes, Full Range Monitors.

Glad to help

Ok man, heres your Stevie Ray Vaughan patch. Listen to the mp3, boy the amp i used it a beauty (i believe one of Line6's greatest achievements in the "feel" area). The first tone is the Divided by 9/15, listen in the beginning, where i rolled down my volume, how clean it is, then i roll up the volume and it starts to break up. Notice how not only can i still get it to sound clean even with the volume rolled up, but also the bass response is cleaner than the treble (which is key to Stevie Ray Vaughan's sound). I believe Line6 really did a SUPERB epic job on this amp. Then i crank up the Tube Screamer and we've got that Stevie Ray Vaughan saturated sound that everyone knows and loves. Sadly, i do not own a Fender, or even a TRUE single coil, but the humbuckers on this guitar (in the middle position, come very close. I would say that if it were single coiled, the bass would be even cleaner and the treble would have jsut tthe right amount of "gain" in it to give you that authentic SRV tone, but for now, as i dont have a single coil, just sit back and listen =)

Then, i play the Dr Z Route 66 model in the background of the (youll notice the switch in the mp3). This amp is a lot cleaner and has a bit more middle range to it. Nevertheless outstanding sounding and is important to the SRV lead sound.

THE REAL MAGIC STARTS NOW, turn both amps on, i strategically made the DR Z amp lower in volume so the Divided By 9/15 is more prominent (so go messing with the volumes yet!) Now you get that complete lush SRV sound. Again, wish i had a single coil, did my best though. Have fun, hope you all will figure out how to turn on the separate screamers (for soloing) and turn on the separate amps.

Order of tones

00:00 - 00:45 Clean Tone Divided By Volume Knob Down

00:46 - 02:05 Broken Up Tone Volume Knob Up

02:06 - 02:27 Divided By 9/15 w/ Screamer

02:29 - 02:57 Route 66 Volume Knob Down

02:58 - 03:33 Route 66 Volume Knob Up

03:33 - 04:03 Route 66 w/ Screamer

04:06 - 04:38 Both Route and Divided By 9/15 Combined

04:39 - End   Both Route and Divided By 9/15 Combined w/ Two Screamers

So you think its SRVish? OR is it just a good tone? Cause tell me now, and ill do my best to re-do it for you guys. Ill be glad, you see this is why i love making tones cuz i found out the beauties of the Divided By amp, i DIDNT even use the Line6 original cabinet (even though that one is great) i thought the Silver Bell is better just for his tone. Ye the feel of this amp is just tremendous and its so omg words cant express it lol. (I know i get worked up over digital modelling, but hey, i think its quite an achievement, though the metal amps could be a bit bettter, but nothing a few firmware updates cant fix (mostly with the cabs, which sound muffled and have odd frequencies).

Anyways, tell me again how SRVish the tone is...

Thanks

The other JM tone i was after and that really drive's me nuts is the one used in the intro and the base guitar on his song "I Dont Trust Myself (with loving you)".

i love the way the sound kinda "opens", sort of like an auto wah (:

I would love to see some EVH tones. Specifically Unchained from Fair Warning, Panama from 1984 and Don't Tell Me from Balance.

I just want to say I think its really cool what Beta is doing.  i think he is a very good player and nice for taking requests.  but I'll be honest.  I've listen to a lot of the tones he's posted for you guys and they don't sound very realistic.  They all sound over prcoessed and more nassy.  A lot of the sounds started out like this when the XT first came out.  Maybe its going to take mroe time for people to figure out how to get past that hurdle.

My biggest complaint of the HD has been its over processed sound then its predicesors.

Also, I can't believe line6 didn't do a pre-set EVH sound.  That's pure BS. I'm having my doubts that the HD is capable for replicated a lot of the 80s tones I like.  clean and lead sounds.  I feel this unit is way to over the top and it is just killing the realism.  just my 2 cents.

but thanks again Beta for putting your time and effort in!

Dude I'm not sure you know what your talking about because he's doing an awesome job. You also say the POD HD can't nail a real sounding tube amp check out this video by David Lenat it's a demo for the editor for POD HD500 go to 4:49 (http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/10195389) He's playing little wing and he nailed the sound. David is so cool he just sent me the Little Wing Patch. He's a sales rep for Line 6.

Hey man, to each his own. I just try to replicate tones that people want. If you think they sound processed, thats fine i guess everyone has their own taste in sound. Ive admitted that the POD HD isnt perfect and could use a lot of firmware updates, and also my tone making isnt perfect either, its probably not even good, i try man, I just felt like anyone who feels like he/she cant make a tone, ide help em out.

Anyways, thanks for your input

hey bobby I just want to make it clear I'm not trying to insult the original poster.  You say I don't know what I'm talking about, fine.  Its all selctive when it comes down to it.  I was just merly giving my opinion.  I think its way cool someone would post patches for free   the video you posted isn't good quality at all, so I won't judge.

Beta, do you think future firmware updates can open more doors up for us?  meaning, getting away from the over processed tones?

for example.  the first tone you posted of andy timmins.  I think its clear listening to the youtube version the guitar tone is legit.  even when he goes into the little solo at the end of the measure.  You don't get the nassle sound from the real deal.

The thing that I never came to understand is why does the original pod 2.0 high brit and rectifier sound so damn good for being 10 years old in technology.  They don't sound processed imo.

Re: OK TIME FOR SOME TONE REQUESTS!
by Bobbyw on 2010-11-28 13:22:52

I understand. to me a lot of it has to do with the gear you have from the guitar to the pick up's even the amp so it is subjective. and as for the video it's not to watch the video portion just for the audio content.

Re: OK TIME FOR SOME TONE REQUESTS!
by beteasta351 on 2010-11-28 13:32:25

Ok, i will answer your questions in my truest opinion.

First of all, i think they can fix this "processed sound" in firmware updates, believe me, i hear it too. Its weird, the POD HD series is different from the X3, in a way, i liked the X3 sounds better. This is how i compare it... When i first played a game on PS3 on my crap TV, it was nice i didnt mind that the graphics werent great. Recently, i got an HD TV. When i played the game in 720 pixels (high def) as opposed to the crappy 420 Pixels, my eyes hurt. I thought it looked TOO REALISTIC. (But i grew to like it a lot better) Thats the key. I think the amp models in this POD are trying too hard to be realistic. To be honest, im still not sure whether i like the X3 better or the HD. I want to love the HD more, because i sold my X3, but to be honest, im not 100% sure, i still havent explored everything. HOWEVER, this extends only to the metal tones. In my opinion, the clean and mid gain tones are far beyond anything the X3 can do and i can prove it! If you can record your favorite Mid gain/clean tone on the X3 or the Xt or the 2.0, i garuntee i can reproduce that for you (no irony intended, im not THE tone maker lol). But as i said mid gain and cleans are eyons above the X3.

The high gains, im very dissapointed with, its actually sad. They DO sound over processed and my favorite amps on the POD X3 were the Dual Rectifier, Big Bottom and the Peavy 5150. Above all, the Dual Rectifier. The Dual Rectifier in the HD has a different sound to it that im not sure im liking. I wish i had my POD X3 so i could try to recreate those tones in real time so i can get that sound again. Yes, the high gain amps have these weird gain issues, its not fizziness. The gain is very weird and it does sound processed (i cant describe it at the moment). It really does sound as if someone threw a blanket over the cabinets (which i heard from other threads) but i think this CAN be fixed and i really hope it is.

Now, as far as the Andy Timmons tone.  Itook another listen, played with the patch again, and your right. The distortion i used was too harsh. (I wouldnt say processed, because the distorted sound from Andy Timmons is very smooth type of distortion). Ide be willing to give another shot at this tone and many others because i think that the mid gains are alot better than the X3, just saying. To describe it, in the actually song, Andy Timmons' tone is more CREAMY, where as mine has this harsher distorted sound. I can fix that.

As i said, im dissapointed with the High Gain tones, hope line6 does something about it.

Also, you may find that no matter what, the tones will sound processed, i agree it will. Its a modeller, even the AXE FX has that kind of sound if you listen to it enough. But hey, everybody is entitled to their opinion!

Re: OK TIME FOR SOME TONE REQUESTS!
by Mrwonka on 2010-11-28 14:09:46

Hey beta, I remember the XT havin similiar issues when it was first released.  I still think the orginal pod had the best high gain sounds.  It took me some to get used to the XTs.

the problem I'm getting with my clean patches is tey tend to clip a lot.  I'm using humbucker pickups, but still.  I've gotten some very high treble sounds on the xt without the clipping.

Add some compression to your cleans. You're probably clipping hard on the transients.

Re: OK TIME FOR SOME TONE REQUESTS!
by Julia343 on 2010-11-29 10:20:03

I've gotten rid of a lot of that "processed" sound on high gain patches on recordings by selecting "no cabinet" and loading a third party IR (like Red Wire) into a convolution reverb. Compare their Ubercab with the one on the POD. I know this does no good for live use without a laptop. And certain cabinet/mic combinations I hate to say sound awful, but there are workarounds. I don't like having to use a block for another EQ just to take the blanket off a cab.

A patch to allow third party IRs to be loaded would go a long way to fixing this.

"Blackmore - Deep Purple "Highway Star", Machine Head tones

Anybody else listen to the Remixes of Machine Head?... it sounds like standing in the room with them, sounds so good..."

Try this one for Smoke on the Water tone.

(FYI, it's set up with an FX loop and meant for a live guitar amp, 4 cable method setup. Routing distortion into the preamp, ducking into the effects loop.)

Hi, I don't know if anyone can help me with this but I've just created my first dual tone patch on the HD 500 using the Mesa & Engl amp models, I've also stuck a tubescreamer to the left of the two amps with some reverb added as well.

Anyway I saved the patch and it sounds great and everything but I've noticed that if i go to another patch and then back to my new one, I get this strange ringing noise and it’s quite annoying. I've tried putting a noise gate in but it doesn't seem to make any difference, the only way i seem to be able to get rid of the noise is by turning one of the amps off and then back on again, obviously this is going to be a problem if I want to switch from another patch to this one. I don't know if anyone else has experienced this problem at all and has found a way round it?

You can't see me but I'm giving you a standing ovation!  That EJ's Cliff of Dover sound is F*ing awesome!  I really had it dialed in on the X3 and as much as I'm enjoying the HD.  I missed that tone! I still have my X3 but I vowed to myself to work through and find my way on my HD500 that I like but I didn't have that one "golden" tone! Thanks man you made my day!

Here's my complete setlist so far.  If anyone can help with the WIP ones, that'd be great.  I need to try some of the earlier posts in this thread.  Anyway, I have some AC/DC, Ozzy, various metal, Metallica, Lamb of God, Killswitch, Periphery, Satch, Petrucci, and Vai tones.  Enjoy, improve, and repost.

01A - BF Twin       - tube comp and reverb

01B - Blues         - AC-30 w/ face fuzz and verb, eq for gain boost

01C - Crunch        - Dr. Z w/ verb

01D - $ for nothing - WIP

02A - AC/DC         - J-800 pre w/ verb

02B - Zepplin       - WIP

02C - Hendrix       - WIP

02D - Pink Floyd    - WIP

03A - Alternative   - WIP

03B - STP           - WIP

03C - Pearl Jam     - WIP

03D - WIP           - WIP

04A - Randy Rhodes  - screamer, J-800, greenbacks, few eq's, and phaser

04B - Zakk Wylde    - heavy distortion, analog chorus, J-800, hiway 4x12, eq's

04C - Recto Pre     - bare recto pre in uber 4x12 w/ eq

04D - Recto Pre 2   - bare recto pre in XXL 4x12 w/ eq

05A - Uberschall    - pre and post gain eq to sculpt tight metal tone

05C - And Justice   - Recto w/ scooped EQ and Uber 4x12

05D - Black Album   - Recto w/ Tread 4x12

06A - Lamb of God   - Fball bright, tight but gritty tone, Uber 4x12

06B - Killswitch    - Fball w/ screamer, XXL 4x12

06C - Scar Symmetry - Fball w/ low mid scoop, XXL 4x12

06D - Periphery     - Fball w/ gate, compressor, screamer, XXL 4x12

07A - Satch         - screamer w/ high mids, J-800, Uber cab, delay, verb

07B - Uber Creamy Lead - Mesa Mark Petrucci lead, Uber pre, Tread 4x12

07C - Petrucci      - Recto, Tread 4x12

07D - Modern Lead   - FBall, tight, slightly scooped

08A - Vai Uber      - eq, red comp, vol, Uber pre, greenback 4x12, tri chorus

08B - Vai Fball     - red comp, vol, Fball pre, greenback 4x12, tri chorus

08C - Van Halen     - WIP

08D - Pornograffiti - WIP

Note that the volume pedals on the Vai patches will affect the amount of gain you have.

I'd also like to mention I haven't thoroughly A/B'ed the tones to the actual recordings; I mostly went off memory.  Many will be darker/brighter - I went more or less neutral in that respect unless someone was known for a seriously dark/bright tone.  I sacrificed accuracy for personal preference on occasion, especially the Metallica Load tone - you can barely hear the guitars on those albums, but that's probably a good thing.

Re: OK TIME FOR SOME TONE REQUESTS!
by daveschutt on 2011-02-22 11:15:40

I really thought you did a great job with the tone requests.  I read through some of your other threads.  Have you given up making full tones for the HD500 until Line6 improves their cabinet models?  Just curious I was reading (not always understanding..but following along) about Redwire and their cabinets.  I'm guessing Redwire is a cabinet modeling plug-in for recording.  Anyway that's not really my thing.  I play live mostly these days in the CCM genre and use my HD500.  Still have my X3 but I want to move forward.  I agree with you 100% regarding your assessment of the two.

Being that I'm playing mostly CCM gigs I used the X3 and the patches Lincoln Brewster posted on his website and the would get most of what I needed, but I can't seem to replicate those tones on the HD that were based on the Variac'd Plexi  Here's a link to one of his songs, (don't worry I'm not trying to brainwash you or convert you!)  It was just the first one that came up on the search.  You can tell he layers his songs with several distinct guitar parts with different tones.  But this song has most the elements of the tones I need.  The main rhythm has very little delay/verb to my ears at least.  With some subltle licks over top with an Edge-y delay, then around 2:30 his solo tone come in so that song has 3 tones I'm looking for.  They may be only one patch with some added or subtracted pedals.

This chimey delayed tone in Hillsong's Hosanna is also not been easy for me to replicate.  It sounds very Vox-ish to me be when I try to use the Vox-models it gets to overdriven as I up the drive to get volume out of the model.

Another song with CCM common tones How He Loves Us Kim Walker and We Cry Out  Sorry it's a long song, there's a solo around 5:10, but you hear most the tones in the first few minutes. Very U2 sounding but I've never been good at dialing in very heavily effected guitar tones.  I've played mostly classic rock and blues all my life and so the extent of my rig was a Tube Screamer and a Wah pedal.  This new stuff for me!

If you can help me at all I'd really appreciate it.  You'd be helping a lot of us out here because churches all over the world are playing a lot of the same songs at services.  At my church 3 of us bought HD500's in hopees of being able to put together a bank of patches that we could swap out and share amongst all the musician that play each week.  We have 4 separate bands covering 9 services a week. I get tired just thinking about it.

Thanks for a your help and time,

Dave

Hey guys!

These tones were really awesome, you have a great musicians ear I would like to request a tone too. I was looking for a really tight sounding high gain metal tone. I play a lot of Avenged Sevenfold,Panthera and so. Here is an example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIcFoy7OKsU   I would be very happy, if you guys could make something like this or just give me some settings.

Those A7X tones sound similar to a Petrucci type Recto tone.  Try patches 4C through 6C as well as 7C on the setlist I provided above.  At least one should get you in the right range.

Thank you guys!

Ok guys, its me again, beteasta351 =D After a long needed break (practicing classical guitar for colleges and what not) I am officially "part time" back on this forum, which I intend to really get going again. It seems as though i have a bunch of helpers on this too ! Thanks to meambobbo and the many others (cant think right off the bat) for posting your wonderful tones, i will try them out too and hopefully post some of my own takes on them! As for tone requests, I am officially starting this up again, continuing where i left off. Thank you to many of those who praised my HD500 work, daveschutt, really appreciate your great approval! I love that Eric Johnson tone but ive made many revisions since! I will post as much as i can and then start filling out new requests. Ive completely redid my setlist for metal tones from the ground up... ill send the setlist as soon as i get home (a few hours).
Thank you everyone for staying on this thread and giving me lots of feedback!

PS - You can all contribute if you want! Everyone has their own difference tonal prefernce and with a little experimentation and teamork, we could conquer this new, bizarre, and epic unit by Line6! I guess meambobbo, since you have a youtube channel, me and you can exchange tones directly and stuff and edit them, but please not just him, anyone else is free to do this! Just friend me!

Be Back Soon

Matt

OK,

I'd like to contribute one (of a very few I've done).

I started with the factory preset "Intoxicated" a dual amp (Twin Reverb + Gibson EH-185) tone and added a color drive distortion pedal and a panned phaser. I went through the amp settings and mixer settings to "balance out" the stereo separation and volume levels.

As with anything, season to taste!

Enjoy!

Re: OK TIME FOR SOME TONE REQUESTS!
by beteasta351 on 2011-02-22 19:09:53

Cowboys From Hell anyone? Just messing around with some Pantera music and i made this patch while listening to Cowboys from Hell. FS1 turns on the Flanger. FS2 switches the patch to "lead mode"

Enjoy!

PS - This tone is mega scooped, so when you go to change the amount of "scoopiness" dont change the AMP Eq, go to the 4 Band Shift EQ and adjust the mids from there. The reason is, if you change the mids on the amp model, itll sound completely different, trust me on this, try it out!

Hi Guys I know this is a way old post.  I was wondering if there way anyway you could PLEASE PLEASE do this tone.  This is the awesome extended solo of Hollow Years on the Budokan show http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpn-3e-YNCU .  I mainly love the feel warmth of the higher gain part after he engages the WAH around 1:25.  I think for the first part he just rolls off the tone or volume.  I've been trying so hard to get this tone on my HD500 but I can't even come close.  I would be for ever in your debt if you could please help me find this tone on the HD500.  I play the POD HD500 through a old Mesa 4x12 CAB through a MESA 90:90 in my band.  So if you do have the time to try this tone, I understand I will have to tweak it with my rig.  Thank You so much your other tones are all freaking amazing, and I am learning a lot on how to carve out tones on this thing by looking at your settings....

Yeah so I tried this patch a while back and while the tone on the youtube video is very similar and very close to the original sound I for some reason dont get anything close to it on my POD HD500.  I mean not even close.  I would be totally happy with the version of the tone that's on the youtube video but for some reason it doesnt even come close on my rig which is basically an Ibanez Jem->Mesa 2:90->old grill type Mesa 4x12.  This is why I was hoping to have beteasta351 try it for me :-).

Re: OK TIME FOR SOME TONE REQUESTS!
by beteasta351 on 2011-04-28 14:32:30

OK... I Think i came very close to John Petrucci's Mark V sound (even though the POD only has a Rectifier). However, there's just something about the Treble in the Rectifier that prevents it from totally geting that smooth Mark V/ Mark IV sound. Anyway, until we have an accurately modelled Mark IV or Mark V (PLEASE LINE6), this patch will do.

P.S. DO NOT ADJUST THE BASS TO MUCH OR THE MIDS OR TREBLE LOL

If you want to change the tone, mess with the Presence, that is where most of the "Smooth" sound comes from when Petrucci plays (and also his guitar and fingers).

But other than that Presence knob thing, Have fun with the tone, to engage Wah, Press FS4. Other FS's do other things... Mess around

just putting this out there - I used to have a Mesa Quad pre-amp, which is basically a Mark II and a Mark III.  I've come VERY close to the way it sounded using the Uber amp (full or pre - pre works a lil better) with a Tube Screamer in front with the drive set to 0% and tone set to 90%.  I use the default cab and mic settings - I believe it's Uber cab and '67 condensor mic - but i turn the ER to 0%.

The trick is to wash out the "fizzy" tones.  I use two parametric EQ's behind the mixer, set the Q to 100% and turn the level down to about 35%.  One I set the frequency to 80%, the other 100%, I think.  I'll have to doublecheck when I get home.  This cleans out a lot of the fizzy high mids and high end, giving you a tighter and more organic sound.  For some reason, it makes the Uber sound like a Mark.

As I said I used to have what amounts to a Mark II C+.  I find the tone is nearly indistinguishable.  I was taken by surprise when I dialed it in.

Good information to have.  I remember on the POD XTL crustyoldrocker had the tame the fizx EQ trick. But since the EQ's on the HD500 are so different to the XTL I've not been able to figure out how to do it.  This is definitely going to be good info to have, I will check this out as well..

Re: OK TIME FOR SOME TONE REQUESTS!
by meambobbo on 2011-04-28 16:54:29

Suni,

be forewarned - these patches may have way too much bass on your rig.  would I be safe to assume you have the deep and modern settings on the mesa power amp turned on?  my pathces were made on a spider valve 1x12 open back, which I'm assuming has much less bass than your rig.  if for any reason the patches sound totally off to you, try adjusting those parameters on your power amp.  I've never actually messed with the 2:90 but I have a 2:95, which is similar - simulclass power - it just doesn't have those voicing switches.

if the bass is overwhelming, try using the bass knob on the amp first, and if that's not working so well, turn down the lows on the last parametric EQ in the chain (for simplicity's sake).

These aren't particularly dialed in for Petrucci, but being that he's got one of my favorite tones, I was definitely shooting for that ballpark.  All are "live" - no cabinet, and meant to be run into a power amp and guitar speakers.  All also have 1 or 2 parametric EQ's used to reduce the "fizz".  The fizz is more pronounced when you use the cab and mic simulations, so these patches only push the frequencies down a little, rather than try to completely eliminate it.  If you eliminate them, you lose a little fullness.

Recto Lead is pretty much a straight Recto tone with some EQ sculpting, delay, and reverb.  I think it makes a decent Scenes from a Memory rhythm sound, as well as his more modern sounding lead.  If you drop the delay and lower the reverb in the mix, you can get a good modern rhythm sound - you may want to turn up the treble, and lessen the mids a bit.

Uber Lead is an Uber with Tube Screamer before the amp to get the tone a little smoother.  Then eq, verb, and delay.  This is what I use for Petrucci's older lead tone.

UberScreamer - Uber w/ Screamer set bright.  I think this sounds similar to the Images and Words rhythm sound.

UberPreScreamer - Same as above but with Uber Pre.  It's a little tighter and heavier.

Try em out and let me know what you think.

Wow meambobbo, thank you sooo much !! I've been a lurker on these forums for so long and I never actually reallized how helpeful some muscians can be to complete strangers !! I do have the modern mode turned on but not the deep.  Thanks for the heads up on the bass and the EQ shaping tip. And my cab too is open (Half open actually) back. And historically my struggles with the POD XTL and (much less so with the) HD 500 has been at gig / band practice volumes, if you turn up the highs it gets too ear piercing and just lots of fizz. And if I turn down the highs then I seem dull and life less.  And I personally have the hardest time truely understanding what MIDS are...I mean highs for example can be vocalized or thought of as "ssss" and lows for axample can be thought of as deeeep MMMMMM.  Well what then is "mids"..? I just have a hard time (due to probably lack of experience especially playing at loud volumes) understanding the "sound" of mids.  Anyways...thanks again and I think because you too have an open back cab I have high hopes for these tones.

Thanks to you too Matt !!! you guys are amazing for just even taking the time to try and help a fellow musician !!! I'm still stuck at work (it's 6:45 Mountain time here) and I will head streight down to the band room with my laptop once I'm off work. I'll keep you guys posted !!!

Howdy, you can easily modify your humbucker guitar and put 2 single coils in place of the humbucker and wire them to work separately, or together, humbucking. You will have to drill holes on the plastic humbucker bezel for the pick up height adjustment mounting screws. Put the 2 single coils in the neck position. Any good guitar tech can wire it up.

I've always felt humbuckers were way too muddy in the neck position and lacked that "Bell-tone" clarity. They are OK for metal, but not for Stevie Ray Vaughan tone.

Please mention what type of Amp/Speaker you are using and what guitar and type of pickup's are used to get the tone.

If possible mention the the 'on-board' switch setting as well.....

Hi beteasta351, I've got a somewhat un-usual request for you.  I have uploaded a POD XT tone that I downloaded from http://089ray.blogspot.com/. This tone to me is the best ever lead tone I've gotten from the POD XTL.  Would it be possible for you to load this tone to your XTL, play it with your current gear, and reproduce it as close as possible on the POD HD 500 ??  I've tried and I cannot seem to get the "creamyness without the thin ness" that this tone provides on the XTL from the HD500.  Thank You in advance !!!!

some mark tremonti kind of sound (clean and distorted)

Tremonti dirty tone is a Tube Screamer into a Rectifier with bass on full. In real life it sounds amazing... on the POD... well try and you'll see.

Tremonti clean would be all effects you can find and turn them on. Kidding... The guy loves phaser on everything. A pretty strong chorus on cleans.

Re: OK TIME FOR SOME TONE REQUESTS!
by Suni on 2011-05-31 05:31:07

Haha..That's awesome, 089Ray !!.  I have checked all your youtube stuff and love all the tones your get.  Yes, when I first purchased the HD500, the first thing I did (before the unit even arrived) was download your HD500 ZIP file :-).  The main problem I have is, I can't seem to get a good "warm" "creamy" lead sound that cuts through with the HD500.  I know it's me and not the pedal because the rythm and clean sounds that I currently have are to me light years ahead than the XTL.  My search is for live use in a band that has another guitarist, so there is always distorted rythm when I play a solo.  And your tones on (even the XTL one) works amazingly with the output mode set to Studio/Direct on my computer with my studio monitors.  But live with the output mode set to Stack/Poweramp there is a high end harshness and not the creamy warmth that the recorded tone has. My setup is: Ibanez Jem->BadHorsie->POD HD500->Mesa 2:90->old grille type Mesa 4x12 with Black Shadows.  I haven't given up though, and hopefully one of these days I may stumble upon what I need to do to milk the creamyness out of the tone I want. :-)

keep in mind that the jem is a very bright guitar, with trebley pickups. I suggest you to re-eq the whole patch if you use it for live purpose.

Regarding the HD, keep an eye on my channel because i'm going to post a new video with fresh new sounds for all tastes. WAY better than the old stuff (like Lead Hyers)

BTW Suni- I'm using a Variax with this tone using either a bridge pickup on an ES-335 or a Strat neck pickup both with the tone pot rolled back to about 7 when I use it.  It may sound different with your guitar.

Dave, Thanks again for that patch.  I tried it and I guess this is pretty much a given with sharing tones, I need to tweak it to match my guitar, my power amp, cab etc.  It's definitely definitely not harsh sounding and it's given me stuff to learn from.  However, I am searching for a more higher gain'y tone, and I'm sure one of these days i WILL find it :-).  Thank You so much for the help and support, you guys are all pretty awesome, for sharing and helping out with patches, settings etc.

Re: OK TIME FOR SOME TONE REQUESTS!
by Suni on 2011-06-01 07:00:08

Totally totally.  My Jem is the 77DBK model that came with DiMarzio Breeds.  I have since changed the neck PU to a DiMarzio D-Sonic, and am planning on replacing that again with the CrunchLab and LiquiFire combo (again cuz, I am so crazy about Petrucci's tone).  But now, I have (in a positive way) given up trying to get his tone in a live setting, just because it probably doesn't make any sense to try to replicate what Petrucci can get with probably about $40-60k worth of equipment with a modelling pedal board and a 15 year old 4x12 :-).  So my tone quest now is for a creamy lead tone that just cuts through a full band with a second distorted guitar, without excessive harshness, trying to find the balance between ear pleasing high's vs ear shattering harsh highs.  I am VERY MUCH looking forward to your new tones, tips and tricks that you mentioned.  I will keep my eyes open for that.  Please if you can, include a tutorial or tips on how to use the EQ's on the HD500 (when going for a petrucci ish tone). :-)

Re: OK TIME FOR SOME TONE REQUESTS!
by daveschutt on 2011-06-01 09:24:50

Suni-  I didn't realize you were going from the HD to a power amp to a cabinet.  In that case you should try using the PRE models versus the full models in your patches.  I go straight to the board live so that's how my patches are set up. That way you're not modeling a cabinet going into a cabinet.

In trying to build tones, my method is find out what the artist uses in most cases and find the amp model that most closely represents that.  Start with all the controls at 12 o'clock and tinker with them a little.  For playing live I tend to dial the drive back a little more that I would for a DAW recording.  Also for live, you want more mids and less bass, treble and presence if you want it to cut through the mix.  It may sound a little duller than you'd expect but when playing with a band and over a PA you'l find that having your highs too dialedu 1. Will bleed over to the symbols frequency range.  2. Will just come across harsh to the audience.  Likewise, too much bass will bleed over to your bass player and lower keyboard's frequency range and generally come across as flubby mush.

My tips are (not taking credit here just culmination of learning from the body of users)

1. Start with a New Tone use the looper to record some open chord, barre chord, and power chord progression. Put it in PRE and now when you start adding or adjusting you tone you can hear it as you go.  Saves a lot of time.

2. If mimic the artist's equipment isn't working, throw out the book and get creative.  Take a head and default cabinet and auditioning different mics.  I've found this really, really makes big difference.  The 409 is my favorite.  If you still haven't found it then try different cabinets, and the go through the mic's again.  I think one of my favorite tones I created is using the P-75, PhD Ported 2x12, and the 409 microphone.  With the X3 I never really experimented with the mics or cabinets that much because there were so many amps you could try.  The HD is different so it takes a different approach.

3. If your high gain patches lack clarity move the amp block so you have a second straight signal path, think of it as a dual tone patch almost like using a JC-120 for the second amp. Use the mixer to then raise the level of the dry signal to your liking.

4. I personally have steered away from using the EQ's on the HD for live purposes  A) I really don't like how Line 6 set them up for the HD (no graphic display, % instead of frequencies) B)  They're too hard for me to adjust on the fly at the venue.  I'm old- an analogman in a digital age so I have to use the K.I.S.S approach- Keep It Simple Stupid.  I have in-ears that do not really 100% reflect what is going out to the house so I know from experience at the venue about where my tonal center should be and let the sound man fine tune it.  He'd going to anyway, LOL!

5. I like a lot of others have followed Glen Delaunes tips on setting up tones and after building many like he does and playing live with them.  I was not really happy with having that 20ms delay in the amp block like he demonstrated.  I got a hold of Glen and he confirmed that that was only meant to be a tip for buildin tones for recording not live unless you want that specific sound.  I have kept in one of my patches Again I Say Rejoice because I wanted a very tight almost no verb or delay sound for that song.

6.  If you play live at the same venue often see if you can arrange a time to work on your tones at the venue after you sketched them out at home.  I've made some great leaps taking an couple hours plugging in at the back of the house and listening over the PA as I tweaked my patches.  If this isn't an option, at sound check use your looper, play a few things and set your guitar down and go out front and listen.  It's helpful and you'll generally get a few puzzled looks from people.

As I mentioned, I go direct so I'm sure there specific tips if you are using an amp and a physical cabinet that may contradict or add to what I've put down here.  Thanks to all that have helped in me better taming this beast!

I'll give it a go and post something in a few days it is a pretty good tone.  I'm assuming that you are playing a Strat through the guitar in correct?  Do you want the tone for a XLR or DAW application or is it going to go through an outside amp and speaker cabinet?

Re: OK TIME FOR SOME TONE REQUESTS!
by mcolquitt on 2011-06-02 02:59:31

Great dave I sure hope you can get it close....I use a couple of strats but fear not I have a 1998 Yngwie Strat. I use the HD500 for the studio mostly but do take it to two spots where I help host blues jams and it is a rather small setup so I run the pod through the board. otherwise it is just used in my home studio.

Thanks for giving it a go...trust me I have tried...you know you may want to check out how close I have come to this tone and maybe just adjust where you want to....just a thought those tones are here hhttp://line6.com/customtone/browse/podhd500/130/  3rd and 4th down from the top. I would primarily look at the first one though. The live one is close to the first but with more delay and so on...

Anyway thanks so much...I cant wait

EDIT: My home studio is a console that feeds the main outs into my fast track ultra and that runs to the computer . I can connect either XLR or Regular 1/4 inch cables into Maudio. There are several open xlr inputs for me to connect it to if it would be better

Dave, Thanks so much for all the tips.  This weekend, I'm going to go into our rehersal space and try your exact approach, especially the looper trick to dial tones is awesome.  I do have 2 more questions for you...

First, on the HD500 do you recomend using a compressor in the chain on a lead tone patch ?  The tone I am trying to go for is a creamy high gain tone like Petrucci's or some of Satriani's tones.  The second question is kinda based on the first one, I have in the last few days managed to dial in a fairly decent lead tone by not trying the high gain (Bogner, Engl, Recto) at all but instead using the Brit P--75 with a classic distortion pedal with gain on both the amp and distortion set to below 50%.  Last night at practice with the full band I was able to test it out (because ofcourse the tone aint worth anything if it doesn't mix well with the rest of the band).  I'm getting close, BUT, I now lack the amount of sustain I "want" :-).  I want to be able to bend a string and have that last for a good 3 seconds before it starts dying down... What tricks could I use to achieve this ? I am afraid to turn the gain up because I don't want to start sounding nassally (as my wife puts it) , so this is where my question about compression comes from.... Thanks again for the awesome tips, and yes I too use Glen Delaunes 20ms delay trick on my distortion rythm and I have been wondering if it's  a bad idea live because it DOES take way clarity..so Thanks Again for sharing that it was meant more for recording than live use.

Re: OK TIME FOR SOME TONE REQUESTS!
by Suni on 2011-06-03 05:15:47

Dave, here's the tone.  There's a EQ in there only because the tone I started with (one I downloaded from Custom Tone) already had one, it appears to have little effect in there but I decided to keep it there anyways.  On my live rig, this tone actually has a nice warm tone but now I'm looking to add just a little bit more sustain where if I hold a bent note (say...fret 10 bent a whole step to 12 on the B string) I'm looking for that note to last about 4 seconds and then start a feed back...I specifically say this because my guitar does do that on some other patches I've worked on with the Engl, Bogner amp. I did try the Pre version of the Brit P-75 last night but it sounded much thinner to me vs the full model.  Thanks again for taking the time to help Dave !!

Something like this X3 patch?  That would be killer!  -cp

Re: OK TIME FOR SOME TONE REQUESTS!
by daveschutt on 2011-06-03 06:00:03

MCOLQUITT-  Here's my attempt at that Yngwie tone. One thing you'll need to do is get a patch cord and plug it in from the FX send to L/Mono Return.  I used a stock Fender Eric Johnson Strat with the neck pick up to dial in the tone.  The tone pot for the neck pickup was on 10.  When I switched to the bridge pickup I rolled back the tone to about 6.   To fine tune the mix between the two amps use the mixer fader and leave the amp controls the way they are.  The amp channel outputs are wired to EXP 2 for a makeshift volume control.  BEWARE- This patch is very loud so you may want to back down the unit's Output control.  Also depending on how quiet your guitar is you can back off the noisegate threshold.  My EJ is pretty noisy so I just adjust it to where I don't hear all the hum and hiss.  Enjoy, let me know how it did!

Re: OK TIME FOR SOME TONE REQUESTS!
by daveschutt on 2011-06-03 09:48:23

Suni-  Here you go.  I think I know what you're after.  Sort of a long note held out with vibrato that morphs into sort of the a feedback harmonic of the same note?  I think that is a little difficult to do with modeling since you don't have the physical elements like a real speaker giving feedback to the guitar pickup but I did my best.  Perhaps one of the hi-gain amps like you mentioned might provide more overtones but you'd lose that creaminess..  I took out your volume pedal and mapped it to the channel ouptut.  If there's too much delay dial the feed back down a little but that will take away some of the sustain of the note.  Also adjust the threshold of the noise gate to the minimum you can that eats up the sustain as well.  If you remvoe it all togeter there's too much white noise.

Re: OK TIME FOR SOME TONE REQUESTS!
by daveschutt on 2011-06-03 14:45:42

Alright No Refunds or Returns!  I took my best shot at getting a patch that could capture as many Frippy tones as I could in one patch.  I used a Les Paul neck pickup with the tone rolled down to about 7 to dial this in.  Your results may vary.  When you click the patch on it will give you the tone for the single note melody lines- Fuzzface and Harmonizer are active- Click F4 to go into a Rhythm mode.  You'll need to either remove the effects loop or put a patch cord into your effects send and L/mono return also the EXP is wired to the Amp output as a volume pedal.    Click F3 and that engages the Pattern Tremelo for that cool part in the middle of the song. F2 is a clean boost.  Enjoy! Let me know what you think!

Dave...I am sitting here in my studio ready to try out this patch and am pretty darn excited but....I am not sure I understand what you mean by the patch cord going from FX L to return...Are you saying to simply take a patch cable (I have plenty) and plug it into the FX send and the other end into the HD500 L return? If that is the case no problem but I am hoping you could explain this to me, it's purpose. Have I been missing out on something?

Thanks so much for the time you have put into this....I think I am just going to try it the way I described above...I sure hope that is what you meant. LOL

I will report back..

Yes that is what I meant.  It's a way you can get a "clean boost" on your guitar patches without coloring the tone plus it saves on DSP.  As you can see in the patch the Send and Mix is turned to Max and then you can adjust the return up how many decibels you want the boost.  When I want a clean boost for solos I'll put it at the end of my chain and ony boost it about 4 dbs but in this patch I boosted it a lot more to simulate the way Yngvie gets his sound by using a wall of amps cranked up.  If you turn it off it still sounds ok but with it on it give that attack on the picked notes you hear in his sound.

Can somebody dial in this tone?

Re: OK TIME FOR SOME TONE REQUESTS!
by meambobbo on 2011-06-03 21:37:44

instead of an fx loop boost, i just use a studio eq and only mess with the "gain" parameter - prolly more dsp intensive, but buyer beware?

I someone has some time, he could take a look at the song "Love Theme" from Moby.

This is a really nice tone I think.

by Suni on 2011-06-04 08:02:44

OK guys I just want to give you a heads up that this man (Dave) is a genius :-) !!  This tone is fantastic (with my guitar and my rig ofcourse).  Dave I tried this tone last night and I had it next to the patch that I had sent to you.  It was such a difference.  I did make some minor tweaks in the delay and noise gate as you suggested.  It is by far THE BEST lead tone I've ever gotten from my rig so far.  The dealy to me on this patch is like Petrucci's (on fast picked notes with the neck PU engaged).

I still have not tested this out with a full band rehersal but I am very excited to try it out at Sunday's practice.

Dave I do have a question about the FX Loop trick, because you had added that to my patch as well.  So I noticed you had dialled 10db into that, and while I was trying to balance the patch volume with the rest of my patches (clean and rythm), I noticed that when I diallled it down, it kinda acted like a gain boost/cut (but without the distortion introduced when you dial up the gain).  So my question is, should I be messing with the output db of the FX Loop to level off my volume or should my volume adjustments be done purely through the mixer ?

Re: OK TIME FOR SOME TONE REQUESTS!
by daveschutt on 2011-06-04 14:46:17

I would use the mixer do adjust your tone volume relative to other tones, that way it would not affect "quality" of the actual tone.  Another thing to experiment with the effects loop boost is where you put it in the chain.  When I want it to be as clean as possible I put it at the end.  If I want it to drive the amp more I put it before the amp block.  But I experiment.  I like that with the new new version of edit you can move things around easier.

One tip I might add is that when creating the tones before I even choose an amp I'll record a loop of open chords, power chords, a little lead.  Then I'll play that loop while I add things, make adjustments, or move things in the chain to hear how they affect the tone.

Here a good article I stumbled upon.  http://tightmixblog.com/guitar/how-to-order-your-guitar-pedals-for-killer-tone/

by Suni on 2011-06-05 17:52:01

Dave, Thanks so much for the link it was very informative.  I tried the patch today with the band and wow it was really really good...the best lead I've gotten ever.  At times I felt the delay still could come further down, but the tone itself is still creamy and cuts through and is a pleasure to play. I think I may just turn the reverb competely off and have it as a toggle if I need it.  On the delay I had already brought the feedback down to 10% so I may need to turn maye the mix down a bit and see how that affects the sustain, but, I now have a solid lead tone to further shape accordingly..  Thanks again Dave, you rock !! I owe you a beer if you are ever down in Salt Lake, Utah..hit me up !! :-)

In general do you have any advice for what are good settings for "time" on the Digital Delay for slow balad type of leads (For the Love of God type of feel and tempo) and what to set "time" to on a faster lead (like the lead on "As I am" by Dream Theater)...not that I can play like that ... :-)

Re: OK TIME FOR SOME TONE REQUESTS!
by daveschutt on 2011-06-06 05:50:27

Suni-  Keep in mind that sometimes the delay will sound over the top when listening through headphones or playing by yourself but when playing with the band or over a PA it is not as out front as it may sound at home.  For delay times I tend to stick with the note defined delays and use the tap tempo to adjust it per song.  I find trying to set milliseconds to be a little frustrating but to answer your question for a slow song you'd want to set the delay probably between 590-700ms, the feed back around 20 and mix between 30-40 for big sound.

Re: OK TIME FOR SOME TONE REQUESTS!
by Suni on 2011-06-07 05:38:48

Dave, Yeah that makes perfect sense.  Thanks again for the advice and the tone.  I'm thinking of having 2 lead patches, one for leads on slower songs and one for leads on faster songs, but for now, I am just looking forward to the next practice where I get to check out the lead tone again hahaha.

BTW Dave, would you have time to look at another patch for me ?  I am in absolutely no hurry and hopefully I am not taking advantage of your kindness.  It's an nylon acoustic (ish sounding) patch played on my electric with the pickup switched to the second position from top (my guitar has the standard Ibanez 5 way selector).

I've been using it for a while, going for this exact type of tone on the extended intro on this song( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V6k1VdgNeKE ) although I know John is playing this is through a piezo pickup etc.  I was very happy with it before but something changed after the 1.31 update and it now sounds great and clean but less acoustic and more like a clean electric.  Let me know if you'd have some time to look at it and I will upload it for you to have a look.

I would really love for someone with POD experience to dial in the tone Randy Rhoads had on his signature "spotlight solo" as recorded on the Ozzy Tribute Live CD. He performed the lengthy solo during the song Suicide Solution. I'd be forever grateful for this tone !!

I have been looking for a good patch for John Mayer's Belief tone. In particular the drive tone from the solo. If you have time, that would be splendid.

Re: OK TIME FOR SOME TONE REQUESTS!
by Suni on 2011-06-07 17:58:52

Dave, This is the tone.  It is really basic, and also one I had downloaded from custom tone.  The COMP Boost is there just for that because I couldn't get the volume I needed until used that.  I use the 2nd postion on my 5 way selector and it sounds clean but for some reason I feel like since the 1.31 update, the acoustic ish nature of the tone kinda went away and it gives something like a clean fender'ish tone now, which is not what I am trying to go for on this patch.  The perfect likelyness for the tone I am trying to get is ofcourse the intro of the Hollow Years live in Budokan (the tone on the part he plays right at the begining, before he actually starts the intro that's on the recorded verson).  I'm probably asking for too much given I don't have a Piezo pickup.. :-)  Here's the youtube link again : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V6k1VdgNeKE

Thanks again for your time Dave, please do take your time, I just have ONE song on our setlist that I need this sound for for a very short intro so I am content to play what I currently have.  But given how good you are at manipulating the HD500 I figured I would ask you... :-)

Also how about the dreamy misha clean tone from periphery?

Dave,

I never got back to this thread to thank you for taking time to work on that Yngwie tone. I really appreciate the time you spent on it; it was very generous of you.

I decided in the end that you simply have to have a wall of marshalls to get that thick sound he was getting on that song, you were right.

What I am really grateful for is the fx loop trick for boosting the sound. That has made so many of my tones so much better.

Cheers and thanks for all your help.

Hi guys-

Sorry I have been MIA and haven't answered to many questions or requests lately.  Got swamped at work and got to make the donuts you know what I mean...

Anyway, to answer pratikb's question.  My tones I have posted are designed to go straight FOH via XLR.  When I'm crafting the tones at home I start with some crappy Samson desktop monitors to get in the ballpark where I can listen to the song and my guitar at the same time.  Then I use some good 64ohm Sennheiser headphones in the headphone jack of the HD to further tune the tone.  Finally I hook the HD up to a powered EV Live X 12" Wedge Monitor I have to further tweak and EQ the tone at volume and also use it to balance the volume between patches and boosts I'm going to use in the upcoming gig.

I just recently purchased a DT50 Head and planning on reworking many of my patches for use with the head.  I opted to use two 2x12 Vox cabinets I have loaded with Vox (Celestion) NeoDog speakers since L6 didn't offer a 2x12 option and I can't use a combo amp for my gigs because our cabinets are backstage.  Sounds great though amp and cab alone can't wait to get my HD tones running through the monster!

You r the MAN....

great speaker and maybe very expensive....I would like to an advise from you...should the VOX VT50 be good for the POD HD or should i buy celestion speaker and connect it to the mixer, as you have used the EV Live X 12 wedge monitor....

i am so confused whether to buy an amp or a speaker

Please help

Thanks and God Bless

Pratik

Re: OK TIME FOR SOME TONE REQUESTS!
by daveschutt on 2011-07-27 06:53:56

Pratikb-

The important question is in what manner will you be using to play live?  When I play live I primarily play direct out of the HD into the House PA (FOH) so having the EV LIveX wedge gave me a truer represenation of what it will sound like at a gig then creating tones using a guitar amp and then switching to direct out at a gig.  Believe me I made that mistake years ago and it was ugly.

So will you be going direct out? or will you have an amp on stage that you are going to mic?

Re: OK TIME FOR SOME TONE REQUESTS!
by pratikb on 2011-07-27 17:53:21

daveschutt-

What i generally do is i have a 20 watt solid state amp and the amp has a pream and a line out. i conncet my pod out to guitar in and then a cable goes from pre-amp of the amp the the House PA....the House PA is also connected to the onstage monitors in the church.

SO what are the possibilities for the Direct out or amp on the stage that will have a mic?

Thanks.

I took a stab at it. You will need to adjust some of the tone settings depending on what guitar and pickups you are using. I made this using a 1998 American Standard Strat with HS-3 DiMarzio's. Also you don't want to lift the wah up too far to get the sound/style like the guy in the video.

Hope this is workable for you.

Here's those Petrucci Tones... (Those are my favorite to make!)

Petrucci Mark IV Tone

Petrucci Clean

http://line6.com/customtone/tone/214431/

Petrucci Phaser

http://line6.com/customtone/tone/214432/

I personally think the POD HD's biggest blunder is the Tread V-30 and Engl XXL cabinets... Actually most of the cabinets kinda suck... But i still love the tones I get out of the POD HD (most of the time)

I am waiting for Line6 to update the cabinets befoe i get working on John Petrucci's rectifier sound (My favorite happens to be from Octavarium). Even though i've created an Octavarium tone, which you can find somewhere on this thread, i think that the more i listen to it, the crappier it sounds...

However, that Mark IV tone i have been using for months and i love it! Try playing "Pull Me Under" with it

EDIT: Here is a quick Petrucci Rectifier sound, for those of you who want to give it a try!

And here is MY TONE (That's right! I haven't modelled anyone's tone for this one, it is my favorite Rhythm and Lead Tone)

Actually, set your pickup to the NECK position, and it makes a great Face Metling Lead (At least in my book)

Have Fun!

My Tone (Metal)

http://line6.com/customtone/tone/214436/

EDIT: Here is another tone based on "Matt's Lead 1"

This tone is a variation on it, more suitable for rhythm work because of its tighter response. However, i like saggy, gritty response, so I personally would use the other one even for Rhythm work, more.

http://line6.com/customtone/tone/214438/

EDIT AGAIN: Here are two more variations on my Rhythm patch, "Matt's Rhythm 1"

The first one uses slightly different settings but with a 409 mic... Very cool tone

http://line6.com/customtone/tone/214440/

The second one uses slightly different settings, but this time with a 67 Mic... Also very metalish and awesome

Now lately unfortunately I have been swamped by work and things and have not much time.  But when things lighten up I'll be back here helping.  It becomes addicting to try to conquer the new and different tones even if they're to music you never envision playing yourself.

I took a crack at this back in January - it's up on Custom Tone but I've attached it here anyway.  I thought it sounded pretty close with a Gibson les Paul Custom - I won't take offence if you think it's rubbish BTW :-)

Here's the note I added on Custom Tone:

This is a general attempt at the main live tone as used by Jimmy Page on the Song Remains The Same album - it should put you somewhere near at least

Here is a blanket Satriani patch I put together from some tone I downloaded from here just after I bought my HD500. I still use this as my go to Lead patch as wellas rhythm; I turn off the delay when using this for that purpose. With the delay off it is also great for blues type gain leadwork.

I really think you will like this one.

This is great!

I can't resist asking for an attempt to duplicate one of my dream tones. It's from an obscure song...

The album? The soundtrack from Cheech and Chong's "Up in Smoke". The song? "Lost Due to Incompetence".

The solo tone is so sweet. Neck humbucker, I think. As I say, it is one of those tones that I've heard in my head (and have not been able to duplicate) since I first heard that track so many, many years ago.

If you are not familiar with the track, it's worth a listen just to hear that awesome tone...

Its been pretty overwhelming and your tones have helped me start to work through this monster of a thing. Theres a couple of tones though i cant seem to get, if you get a chance heres a couple of bands whose tones I'm trying to get.

Iced Earth

Thanks a bunch. Keep up the good work!

Denny,

What do you mean your compressors are making noise? If you are talking about hiss or are not certain where to place the effects (a lot of people are not sure don't feel alone if this is the case) in the HD500 chain then use this as a guide when making tones with gain or even compression in some cases will benefit from this signal flow.

NoiseGate>Compressors and/or Distortion>Amplifier(s)>Mixer>Reverb>delay/Modulation effects etc etc.

If you put your Threshold at about 50% (12 oclock) and your decay at almost off then you should get no hissor noise at all. If there is any adjust your thresh higher.

Hope this helps....as for your Paisley tone? Can't help ya there. I have a decent Steve Morse Chicken picken tone if you like.

I have one that is pretty close to this example you referenced. You can find it here http://line6.com/customtone/tone/214501/Ripping lead w delay.h5e

You will want to back off the delay mix amount a bit but it's pretty close. Hope it works for you.

Hi forum members and experts,

can you please help me in creating a patch for the intro guitar sound of Rainbow "Catch the rainbow" studio version.

Thanks a lot

Thomas

Re: OK TIME FOR SOME TONE REQUESTS!
by mazuwa on 2012-03-15 01:16:48

Hey aeugle,

Here are the two patches for you with full amp sims and effects for "Catch the rainbow". They are meant to be as they are, completely.

One patch is for playing the intro and verse, the other one has got more drive for the guitar solo.

I compared the sound from the cd with my strat over headphone, and for me it is o.k.for the first quick minute shot, of course I had to compromise.

Please see the pathes only as a purpose or as a help for you (if you like it), not as the ultimative sound.

You should compensate the different output of your guitar in contrast to mine: The first block is the screamer. Here you can modify simply output and drive.

With drive set to "0", the guitar should sound completely clean, even if you pull hard (use output gain). Then set the drive back to 24 or as you like, not too much, just until the sound fatens up without sounding distored!

These are my thoughts:

- Screamer: I used it as a treble booster. If you want a compresser additionally you can also use the tube compressor and reduce the bass a little.

- MidFocusEQ: Reduce bass and Treble, to set a dominat mid-sound.

- TapeEcho: To add delay/echo and to manipulate sound

- Vox30amp: I've heard Ritchie likes this amp. It is the vintage amp of my choice. But I changed the box +mic simulation to get better frequencies.

- Digital delay path A: Give more room

- Barberpole Phase: My choice after trying some phasers. It has many values to edit. The feedback value gives more auto wah sound.

- Graphic EQ: More frequency correction

- Spring Verb: Hope it keeps the vintage touch. To reduce Cpu ressource use another reverb.

Have fun and give some feedback if it is a good start for you.

Of cousre I cannot make the sound perfect for your guitar and devices from my home.

Re: OK TIME FOR SOME TONE REQUESTS!
by mazuwa on 2012-03-15 15:47:43

Sorry for deleting my old message. Please see above.

Ps.: Don't forget to use the neck pickup only!

Myself, I use hum canceling stacked single coils with moderate output volume.

I have mounted the pickups with a respectable distance to the strings.

Re: OK TIME FOR SOME TONE REQUESTS!
by aeugle on 2012-03-16 07:20:04

Hey mazuwa,

thumbs up, thank you a lot. Very good tone. I will further work on it.

As I looked to the patches I saw that you have "Variax control enabled" for a Tyler Variax -> force the Variax to use Start Model with neck position.

So my question is: Do you use/have a Tyler for this patch? If yes, which one?

I also play it with a Tyler 89. Nice guitar.

For the solo part you forced a T-Model with bridge position. Shall I use this also or also play with Strat Neck position?

Best regards

Thomas

Re: OK TIME FOR SOME TONE REQUESTS!
by mazuwa on 2012-03-16 08:22:35

No (sorry), I play a traditional self made strat style guitar. The reason for the Variax parameter ist because if you choose "same", you increase input volume by doubling the input signal strength. "Aux" produces more noise, so I always choose "Variax". The parameters set are the ones that come with "new preset"! Please play the complete song with neck pickup!!!

I'm pleased I could help you to give you a good start, and you understand you still have to work on the tone for your own complete line-up. It is a general thing which makes it hard to share sounds.

aha, understood. the patch sounds realy good.

May I ask you another question as you seems a real expert

Do you know Billy Talent "Fallen Leave" ? I have absolutely no clue which effect or settings are used in the intro. I asked but until now get no answer

Re: OK TIME FOR SOME TONE REQUESTS!
by mazuwa on 2012-03-16 11:28:45

Hi aeugle,

First I'd like to come back to the CTR solo patch from above: It has to be played with bottle neck!

Now to your new question: This is a modulation effect, where the volume has been modulated by a positive square wave. No negativ wave, where it is zero.

I'm sure this has been made in the studio on the pc midi controlled.

However, I found a way to come close to it with the internal stomps of the HD500.

Put the effect at the very end, so the reverb will also stop!!!

Use the category "Modulation", then choose "Pattern Tremolo".

Edit it as follow:

- Speed at about 9.00 Hz (depends on the song tempo, but this one is about 9 Hz)

- Step 1 = FULL

- Step 2 = MUTE

- Step 3 = FULL

- Step 4 = MUTE

You can also set Step 3+4 = SKIP (same result)

Imortant Hint: The modulated (auto)-pause has a defined speed, so you must play at the exact speed of the frequency.

Because this is difficult, just hit one short single note and listen to the rhythm/speed. Then start playing. It takes practise.

Put a foot controller on this effect so you can turn it on/off.

Re: OK TIME FOR SOME TONE REQUESTS!
by jimsreynolds on 2012-03-16 11:37:48

Yeah I reckon you are right that the tremolo is applied as a mixdown effect on the recording.  If you listen closely to the fourth bar of the sequence:  the effects has been turned off between the 2nd and 3rd beat of that bar so that you get to hear the chord transition.  You would need to be a total ninja to drop the effect out and back in again within the two bars

The pattern trem seems like a good move.

Re: OK TIME FOR SOME TONE REQUESTS!
by mazuwa on 2012-03-16 23:28:52

Thanks for detailed listening.

So for auegle, it is important that he stays in rhythm with his playing. Continue playing regardless the effect, and stop the effect for a while when the passage comes, then restart the effect again. You must synchronize the move of your hands with your feet (as if you steped with the rhythm).

Re: OK TIME FOR SOME TONE REQUESTS!
by aeugle on 2012-03-18 12:03:25

Hi Mazuwa,

thanks for this great tip. I exactly followed your advice. Now I can play the intro !!!!!! The tip with hitting the note then listen was helpful. So it is easy, because the modulation is easy to follow.

Looking for the next  sound "riddle" for you.

all thumbs up

Thomas

A tone ive been trying to get for years  is Tom Morello's tone for the main riff in Renegades of funk, that fat riff tone is amazing, I have simulated the tone for the solo using the wammy pitch effect works great, but that tone for that heavy main riff in the verse is what im looking for,  if anyone has something close please post it.    Thanks,   Cheers.

My take on Randy's Tone. Took two patches one recorded panned L the other to R and for solo I just turned the delay on.

When I have time to figure out how to upload the patch Ill edit this and include it in this post if anyone wants it.

Since I got here via a convoluted path, I'm not sure whether I'm in the right place to request custom tones.  If I am, I'd like to request the intro to The Cult's "Fire Woman."  If this is the wrong place for requests, then please provide a link, or at least, send me in the right direction.  Thank you!

Malnack, thanks for assuring me I'm in the right place.  I'm using an HD500.  And I decided to post my own discussion and hope someone will be able to come up with the "Fire Woman" intro I mentioned.  And also the same tone Type O Negative uses in "Cinnamon Girl" and "Summer Breeze," two of their best covers.

Re: OK TIME FOR SOME TONE REQUESTS!
by SpiderIV4Richard on 2012-07-07 16:49:54

Duker 63, thanks for answering.  I regret to say I didn't entirely understand your response.  Perhaps you meant "is" one file instead of "in" one file?  If so, then I'm already aware and have downloaded several tones.  But I am indeed hoping someone can create a custom tone for the intro to "Fire Woman," not to mention the guitar sound of Type O Negative's "Cinnamon Girl" and "Summer Breeze," two of their best covers.

I found everytone in customtone in one file

There is an issue but I fixed it

all the h5e files have l6t extensions

I wrote a batch file and converted them all to h5e patch files

Now I have every Customtone file for the hd500 from inception to yesterday

About 4400

I recommend the afterburner

Now my request

I want the guitar tone for the song

Dear Mr. beteasta351,

You are kindly requested a tone of Ola Englund.

It was extreamly impressive for me when I watched his Youtube regarding comparision between 5150 and Bugera.

He made me a slave of 7 strings guitar.

Please kindly make the tone on the YouTube;

I'm surprised there's no Queensryche tones particularly from their Operation Mindcrime or Empire albums but anything from their earlier stuff would be great too, they were very experimental with tones and effects.

ALSO YOU MUST CHANGE THE PDF FILES INTO "h5e" files, just rename them
