Using HD w/ Crate Power Block!!!!
by fingerscaraballo on 2011-06-02 06:03:15

I've benn using the Pod HD 500 with the Crate power block. and have been enjoying killer tones I run the Block to a Marshall 1960's cab

with a Variax 300, and a custom 24 PRS and a standard Les Paul. I use the full amps as well as pre amps it depends on the sound Im looking 4.

I dont use any cab/mic simulation. and for my lead tone I add a Distortion pedal for sustain either a tube screamer or classic distortion Etc.

I have an external expression pedal for anything from adding more delay mix, Delay Feedback, or amp mids, drive Etc, and use the on board for Wah and Volume

assigning the output of the amp to the units pedal.    sometimes for lead boost I assing the external pedal to go from what ever volume the amp is set to heel and then I set Toe to 100%

so I dont have to change patches when switching to leads. It works great. Also when using the acoustic model on the Variax I add a Loopeffect block and sent a signal straigth to the house board. My friend has a Taylor acoustic guitar and he looks at me with enby LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!    it sounds   so good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I tried that and got OK results for some of the models... I have no way to turn off cab sims since I own a 300, but I did insert my signal into the RCA inputs of the powerblock, bypassing the peaker sim circuit.   Tone is OK like that at best but I did not go crazy tweaking my tones.....  So far.. I've gotten the best results going into the PA system with my HD300.    How are you running your POD output into the power block?

The schematic in the PowerBlock manual is incorrect.  The 1/4" line-in's also bypass the cab sims.  I have used them for years with my X3L with excellent results.

I had a discussion with a Crate engineer a few years ago, and he confirmed that the schematic was incorrect regarding the line-in's.  While the schematic shows the line-in's going to the cab sim, they do, in fact, bypass it.

That is just awesome.  I have never been so happy to be wrong.  I like my PowerBlock even more now.  Thanks....  What you or anyone happen to have corrected schematics?

So true I Also used the X3L in that way and got Killer tone out of it.

Are you still using the Power Block ( with the HD ) or do you use a different rig?

I run mine stright from the HD500 into the fx return on the Crate. This disables all the control knobs on the amp and volume is controlled directly from my Pod.

Sounds fantastic!

I'll have to play wih it some more.  I had some midrange weirdness on some of the models and most had too much bottom as well.

Same here Im very pleased with the combination of The Power block and the HD.

I own a Carvin 100 power tube amp but get that Fizz that everyone keeps talking about, not so with the crate just great tone.

I plug it the same way but I have a stereo cab.

Do you have a stereo cab?

Re: Using HD w/ Crate Power Block!!!!

There was no corrected schematic.  The PowerBlock was discontinued before they reprinted the manual and schematic.

I was running the HD / PB into a stero cab.

???? From what I understand The Crate Power block does not have cab emulation

At present I'm running my Crate into a 12" wedge monitor, but have just bought a pair of LDsystems 10" pa cabs to use instead!

I'm not concerned about stereo, as I plan eventually to run my voice through the Pod as well as guitar, and of course the HD500 allows you to have multiple setups depending on the individual song.

You can turn off cab sims on POD HD300.

  • Push the presets knob to enter the edit mode
  • Use navigational keys to select the AMP, left to right
  • Change model setting from FULL to PREAMP

You should also be able do this thru updated POD hd300 edit software by clicking on full or preamp buttons above amp model selector.

Btw, I am jealous of you guys owning discontinued crate power block.

I hope someone will start producing something similar in that price range.

I thought the pre setting only eliminated the power amp section of the model but did not disable the cab sim.   The mic sims are disabled by switching from studio direct to live mode.  The power block has been useful to be me in many ways over the last several years.  I used to own two and ran each channel of my old POD XT through each powerblock but I sold one when I stopped using the POD as a live rig.  They are on ebay once in a while.

It has a cab / speaker sim circuit but only engaged if you plug into the front input.  The effects return and the CD inputs bypass the sims.

you can still order new Power blocks from musicians friend or by ordering them at your local music store!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd had mine for ever and never had a problem with mine ( I always bypass the preamp section )

Tried to find it on musiciansfriend http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Crate-CPB150-PowerBlock-Stereo-Guitar-Amp?sku=487829and it says "We're sorry, this product has been discontinued" and there's no order button.

In music stores in my eastern European country you even have to wait for popular products such as line 6 actual models for couple of months, so this also fails as an option. I tried my luck, and the answer was “Crate Powerblock?? It has been discontinued long time ago”

Found a couple of second hands on ebay, but all of them are from the states and in combination with, again, my country's import laws and taxes this would be impossible to receive it, or eventually return if the unit is not in working order.

Thanks for the enthusiasm, anyway.

Unfortunately they haven't been sold for over three years now.  I had to buy mine used through eBay.  Sigh . . . at one point Musician's Friend was clearing them out for $75!  I paid over $125 for mine used!  I cannot complain, as I have gotten years of dependable use from it.

Crate discontinued the product because they were not making enough profit based on the volume of them being sold.  I have a feeling that the buggered schematic may have had something to do with the lackluster sales.  The cab sim is only engaged for the headphone and XLR circuits, but the schematic shows it engaged for everything except the CD input.  As I have noted previously, I spoke to engineers at Crate who verified tha the schematic is wrong.

I think they go for between 100 and 150 on ebay these days.

That seems odd - why then would you want to use it as a guitar amp head if you can't plug into the front and connect to a speaker cab?  Are you sure it's not the headphone jack that has cab sim on it?

No, it is not true. Today i received my power block that i buy from ebay, try to connect into return and see that cab sim is working((... BUT! when i connect into CD in - it's OFF. Sound is bright. I use powerblock with 2x12 celestion G12H30 Anniversary cab. Schematic in manual is correct.
