Any news on POD HD Desktop on customtone?
by SyntheticChild on 2011-07-05 01:57:35

Does anyone know when we'll have a customtone library for the POD HD Desktop?

Is there any way to download patches for the HD500 and look at the settings?

Yes - you can do better than that.  You can directly use POD HD500 patches in your bean.

Just download the HD500 patches from Custom Tone, put them on your desktop, open POD HD Edit and ten drag the HD500 patches into the set lists and preset slots in POD HD Edit.  If you like them go to the SEND section at the top left of the computer based editor and Send Selected, which will send any presets you've highlighted to the POD.

Just watch out for any POD HD500 presets that have an FX Loop effect included as whilst this should be ignored by the bean given there is no FX Loop, there currently seems to be a little bit of an issue that the settings aren't ignored by the bean properly at the moment.  The presets will still work but if you try to edit the FX Loop effect on the bean it will cause the bean to reboot.  This issue has been reported and I guess it will be fixed at some point, but it's livable with given that technically the POD HD desktop unit and POD HD500 are actually different animals albeit with the same parental lineage, and as long as you are aware of the issue.

You can always download POD HD500 Edit and use it offline (ie no HD500 connected) to view each downloaded patch and you can simply edit out any errant FX Loop effects.  If you look back through this forum, you'll see that a couple of users have helpfully downloaded and compiled several bundles of HD500 tones which represent everything that was on Custom Tone for the HD500 up to about April this year (and that was about 1200 tones I think).  You can drag and drop complete HD500 tone bundles into POD HD Edit and audition the tones using your POD HD without making any of those tones permanent in the HD (POD HD Edit will 'remember' the presets during the current editing session and control the POD HD but won't actually overwrite the POD itself unless you decide to SEND ALL, SEND SELECTED or SEND SET LIST - although you might at first think it has done.

Thanks Nick! Would I have to rename extentions? I've read that to use 300 and 400 patches on the 500, you just rename the extention, and it'll work. Is this true for the bean?

Nope.  Just drag and drop the HD500 selections directly into POD HD Edit and they'll work.. If you do it by the File > Open method, POD HD Edit will filter what it's looking for by the file extension, but even there you can change the filter to look at ALL files and you can load the HD500 presets from there too.

The HD300/400 patches do not load into the HD500 editor as far as I know,  I haven't tried it TBH, but those two PODs have completely different architecture to the POD HD and HD500 which are closely related.

I will try it though to be sure

I can confirm that the HD300/400 patches are not transferable to the HD500 platform. They must be manually recreated in the HD500.

hmm.. I'm pretty sure I read it somewhere. Maybe it was patches for 300 used on the 400? I'm not sure, I just remember reading it on here somewhere. Anyway, Thanks for the input and all the info guys! It's a great help.

I was already 99.99% sure that HD300/400 patches were not transferrable to the HD500 - well I was actually 100% sure, but then doubted myself for a split second.  I've just checked my facts again by actually trying it - and even if you do change the file extension HD500 Edit knows and refuses it entry.  So as Silverhead has already confirmed it definitely does not work

Hi Nick,

I tried the drag and drop, but get an error message with the latest firmware/drivers.

Shame the Desktop is left out of custom tones.

It is only sort of left out:

Yes there is no picture caption like the rest of custome tone hardware has however if you click on the dropdown menu at top of patch that pulls up a list of all hardware you will see Bean listed simply as Pod HD.

That being said .. you can just drag and drop the HD series tones form other hardware into the bean and they work ..the HD 500 has the most to choose from anyway.

There are some tones in the Bean catagory but not as many since it is difficult to find.

I have had good/quick results sorting the tones by rating and downloading mostly only the 4 or 5 star top rated tones, but if you have time to try all of the nearly 3000 tones it could be worthwhile.

Be careful, there are some crazy differences in volume levels among the patches on Customtone - some of them are so loud they will nearly blow your head off, especially when auditioning through headphones.

A community member here has developed and shared a Pod HD tone/file converter (thanks zab!). You can find it here:

http://www.jzab.de/content/pod-hd">http://www.jzab.de/content/pod-hd">http://www.jzab.de/content/pod-hd

Bear in mind that there are significant architectural differences between the HD300/400 and the dual-path HD Desktop/500/Pro. Any HD300/400 tone file can be converted and loaded into one of the dual-path devices and it should sound pretty much the same. However, there is simply no way to convert a dual-path preset to the HD300/400. I'm not exactly sure how zab's utility software handles this attempt, but even if it seems succesful the resulting single-path tone will not sound like the original dual-path tone.

We already have a custom tone library in here it is simply called POD HD not so many presets as in the POD HD 500 Library but as many point out here you can use the drag and drop method or as in my case the better option use the converter
