What are your favorite strings for the JTV?
by pugdealer on 2011-11-30 07:48:41

I know the JTVs come with D'addarios 10-46 as standard, and that's fine by me. But eventually I'll have to restring mine, and was wondering if theres any type of preference or tendance towards any type of maker or model...

I'm thinking in getting next either the d'addarios EXL110 or the Ernie Ball 2221 regular slinky. What's your opinion?

When I worked at Valley Arts Guitar in Studio City, CA - i must have restringed 1,000's of guitars (seriously)

and i tried every type of string, so i have formed my own opnions.

My favorite strings are pure nickel Fender Super Bullets .010-.046, (3150R)

<a target=new href=http://static.musiciansfriend.com/derivates/6/001/387/966/DV019_Jpg_Regular_423255.jpg"class="jive-image" src="http://static.musiciansfriend.com/derivates/6/001/387/966/DV019_Jpg_Regular_423255.jpg"/>

for these reasons:

<a target=new href=http://ksound.up.seesaa.net/image/Fender_Bullet-end.jpg"class="jive-image" src="http://ksound.up.seesaa.net/image/Fender_Bullet-end.jpg"/>

* The Fender Bullet End never breaks and does not suffer the typiical loose "ball end" string wraps of other strings. This helps keep the guitar in tune - weather playing blues with lots of string bending on a hardtail guitar, or using a tremolo equipped guitar.

* The Fender Super Bullet strings are "semi polished" round wound, which means much less string noise from left hand rapid chord changes, and frets last longer.

* Pure Nickel strings on the magnetic pickups  sound warmer and less brittle, compared to Steel strings. i can hear the difference.

I also figure if Super Bullets are good enough for Larry Carlton, they are good enough for me too.

thanks Steve, love the detailed reasons....

it's easy for more people to say they prefer string x

i use the elixir 10-46 polyweb sets (dont like the nanoweb sets)

my reasons are just the feel is nice... the sound is round and smooth and no so harsh

they last a long time... i have 20+ guitars so i might not play a particular one much...

but nothing sucks worse than grabbing a rare play and having to restring it.

but i'll be giving these ones a try next batch!

I'm almost embarrased to give my opinion after that analysis, but I use Elixir nanoweb .10-.46 because I like the way they sound and I am lazy and hate changing strings.  I kind of want to try Fender Super Bullets now.

Be sure to get the 3150R - as these are the Pure Nickel type.

Fender marketing department reinforces confusion, as they tend to change the packaging every few years.

If you go to a Store and say - "give me a set of .010-46"  Fender Super Bullets !" - you NOT get the correct type Fender Strings.

Just ask for  a set of Fender 3150R

Not all stores carry them. i order them in bulk off Amazon.com

I found those fender strings on my online store, but with a different packaging, could you confirm if they're the ones you know http://www.thomann.de/pt/fender_3150r_bullets_02.htm

Themost important factor for me is durability. How to you find these in terms of durability. I've tried different strings over the years, and I find myself always coming back to d'addarios, but the ernie ball ones seem good too, i've tried a set, and they're used by LOTS of famous guitarrists/bands, so they say.

Any opinion on the d'addarios or ernie ball ones???

pugdealer, I've used Elixirs before, but they had some string breakage issues (maybe its fixed by now, but I've moved on). Anyway, I use the D'addario 10-46 strings and have had great luck with them on all of my electrics.

YEs - those are the same 3150R strings - with the 2002 -2009 era packaging.

I love d'Addario Strings too, and use them on my guitars with Bigsbys - where the Fender Bullets will not work for obvious reasons.

I worked for Ernie Ball for 3 years, still prefer Fender or d'Addario's or DR Blues Pure Nickel, John Pearse-Thomastik Pure Nickel too.

StringsI hate:

Elixers (all sound a bit on the dead side to me, and on my Gibson Robot guitars the coating causes electrical connection problems with the servo tuners.

Ernie Ball - very inconsistent, tend to break at the ball ends. They are listed as used by many pro guitarists, but the truth is EB sends all those guys free strings, and their roadies change them every day.

Any MusiciansFriend Bulk "Musicians Gear" 10packs for $5 type asian strings from DHGate.com  - massive intonation problems.
