clean delay with distorted sound
by seddo1966 on 2012-02-18 14:13:01

How can i get a clean delay, either ping pong or digital, but at the same time have my main patch sound distorted.

When i use distortion, the delays are distorted and i don't really like the sound of them.

I've tried messing about with the Wide routing, but to no avail.

Many Thanks

Gary

The only ways i can think of to do this is:

  • Set up two amps at once in stereo panned hard left and right.
  • make one amp distorted, the other clean.
  • Put a stomp box delay in front of the clean amp.
  • futz around with the stomp's levels and the clean amp's panning to get the delay where you want it.
  • adjust the panning of the distorted amp to try to balance the stereo field.
  • The only delay repeats that you should hear will be from the clean amp.

Unfortunately, i don't imagine that this will sound very good....

You MIGHT be able to do the same thing with a post delay, since i think some of them let you control the left and right levels.

Sorry for not being clear; i just got a new computer and don't have Edit up an running at the moment.

Hope this helps,

Good Luck,

Joe

Thanks Joe,

I will give that a go tomorrow, after work. I'll give it a good going over to see what i can get.

I'll let you know the outcome, when i'm done. Your advice/description was clear to me mate.

Many Thanks for your help, much appreciated.

Cheers,

Gary

Hello joe,

Sorry for the delay in my reply. I didn't have any free time until the weekend gone.

I gave your instructions a go, and got a clean delay, with distortion.

In fact it sounds rather good, you couldn't go all out heavy, but i tried a bit of chorus on the delay(with a stompbox chorus)

and got a U2/the edge kinda effec, quite interesting.... Very interesting infact.

You should give it a go, lots of different senarios/sounds, good fun

Many Thanks

Gary

I'm happy the technique worked out for you.  If you're not using Line6Edit with your Vetta, i highly recommend it, as it makes things like this much easier to visualize.

If you're tweaking your sound for the stage, you should read this excellent article by XONE about tweaking the vetta:

Also, lots of great people contributed to this thread in the POD forum, but you can use lots of the info to get more out of your Vetta:

Rock on,

Joe
