Best way to amplify HD500 without affecting sound?
by barneyrubble1976 on 2012-03-23 08:10:02

So I recently bought the HD500 and an slowly getting used to its huge number of features. Have a supposedly pretty simple question...how do I best amplify the HD500? By modelling the amps and effects in the pod itself I don't want the amp to change this. I curently have a VOX Valvetronix digital modeling amp which by design will apply an additional amp and effects to the sound. When using this amp, it changes the HD500 preset sound, no matter how neutral I try to put the amp settings on.

So is it as simple as getting a non digital modeling amp and putting all settings on neutral. If so, would a small tube amp make much difference to a non tube amp.

Or could I buy a normal hifi style amp and set of speakers.

Or should I just run through the computer?

Advice / experience appreciated......

To amplify the HD500 sound without affecting its tonality I think your best options are:

- a pair of studio monitors with minimum 5" speakers - up to 8"would be best. Make sure you get active (self-powered) speakers that are Full Range Flat Response (FRFR). The latter ensures minimal tonal affect on the incoming signal. This setup would be best for home studio use.

- a small, portable PA system with minimum 8" speakers, again FRFR would be best and is generally achieved by keeping the PA system's  tone settings neutral and not using any of its onboard FX (e.g., Reverb). This setup is useful in a home/practive environment and also for gigs in small venues that may not have their own PA system.

- a Power Engine amplifier, or a keyboard amplifier. Looks like a guitar amp but is designed to provide close to FRFR amplification. This setup is best if you plane to mic an amp into a soundboard.

I would not run it through the computer.

Hope this helps.

+1 to silverhead,

These are all great options. Just remember,  with modeling all pedals and FX units the closer you get to "flat" the better off you are.

Thanks,

David

Thanks for advice, this is clear. Also this advice is echoed in other internet forums I have since found.

My next question is whether there are studio monitors / PA systems you would recommend for the HD500? Or is this a question for a different forum?

This a n appropriate question for here. In fact it has been asked and answered here several times. Try a search - you should find some good opinions. Here's a start:

So, a little delayed, but finally got a pair of KRK ROKIT 8's last month and not disappointed. Managed to get a good deal in US and sound is great (fuses need changing for European voltage but easilydone!). Only issue which drove me nuts was that when connecting to the HD500 with the XLR cables, I got little to no sound. After a few days I got the obvious idea of using the usual 1/4 inch cables and not looked back. Awesome.

Advice spot on, thanks.
