SV 212 mkII closed back mod
by wolfgang76 on 2012-06-21 19:15:04

I am considering modifying my SV 212 from opened back to close back, I was going take the back off and and cut a piece of wood that seals most of the back.

Has anyone tried this before? Do you think its a good idea?

My concern is that the tubes will be sealed inside with no air vents, is this a bad thing?

Or should I cut a small hole/vent where the tubes are? In saying that would that defeat the purpose of  going for a closed back effect in the first place?

I'd probably think twice, sound-wise. My guess is that they made it an open back amp for a reason. I've played through a hd100 with a closed cabinet (no V30s though) and it sounded not good. On the other hand, the Line6 cabinet suited for the HD100 is closed.

I'm not that experienced, but my guess is that you'll need a ventilator of some sort, which will probably undo any effects induced by the closed back. Bear in mind that the tubes are more or less in the middle of the back.

If you really want a closed back, I'd say sell your 212, and buy a hd100 with a closed 2x12 cabinet.

Sorry what I meant to say was - not fully sealed, but just cover up to where the amp section is, leaving a gap where the speaker cables etc and tubes are

I think that won't affect your sound much.

Why not do the roadking thing...just add a 212 sealed cabinet...get some thump and some openback...

Good idea but I want to get rid of the chinese V30's that come with the SV. They sound great at low volumes, but when I go to turn it up at band rehearsals I get a really crappy sounding

early speaker breakup. I play metal and rock and use hi gain settings and want a tight punchy rhythm sound for palm muting etc etc. The low end on V30's just wobble and sound like mud.

I tried my sv through a sealed quad and it was perfect, only thing is a quad is too large for me to lug around, which is why I bought a combo in the first place. So I figured either adding an extra sealed 212 cab and swapping out the v30's and maybe atleast half seal the sv, might work, who knows try n find out I guess....

I assume the closed cabinet had V30's in it? Anyway, be shure to change only 1 parameter at a time to compare your sound.

that is exactly what I did...I loathe V30s...I use SV112s...I have a MK1 and a MK2....I run a 212 in tandem...All 16 ohm in parallel....5.3 ohm load....I use Madison Minstrels which are rated @ 165 watt...V30s do tend to work better in a sealed cab...The air pressure keeps them from breaking up too early...

I think if you put some high rated drivers in the SV that should help you get around the breakup...EV12L, Commonwealth...or some such that is rated upwards or 200 watts...

I dont know what speakers were in the cab as the owner had no idea, it was a marshall cab , thats all I know.

The fact it was a sealed cab and sounded tight I think answered a bit of my problem

Well anyhow I installed a pair of Celestion G12 "hot 100's". Hmm they are very very loud, but now sound like its lost a bit of Mid range....

So maybe I'll put 1 V30 + G12100 and see how that goes....

Well just a final update to this. I got a 212 sealed cab and placed a V30 and a G12hot100 in it.

Ran it with my new DT50 head and voila!!  the sound I was looking for...a nice tight low end hi gain rectifier-ish kinda sound

Im selling the SV combo, after playing the DT-50 why would you bother? and Ive heard it gets even better once you integrate a HD500 floorboard!

I put an Eminence Red, White and Blues in mine and I run it with a marshall 2x12 cab with 75's in it. The Eminence is 120W and sounds very clear, coupled with the scooped deep thump from the marshall it's a match made in Heaven!

I use a closed back 212 with my SV212, V30's in the closed back and WGS HP Reapers in the open combo and it sounds amazing. Sounds great in an X pattern as well. I A/B'd my SV with my friends triple rectifier and the SV sounds smoother.
