XD-V70 does not work with Shure Beta 58A capsule
by Rusha11988 on 2012-08-14 15:07:38

Hello Community,

I bought 2 V70 and a Shure Beta 58A capsule.

The Shure Beta 58A works fine at a Shure Transmitter. But it doesn't work with my 2 V70... The curiosity is that the Beta 58A worked with a V70 of a friend of mine. The V70 was bought at the same distributor and all 3 has the same software-version (v1). I tested if the pins have connection - i think they do (tested with some Tesa on the capsule so I could see if the Tesa was damaged on 3 rings).

I read that somebody have had problems with old Shure-capsules but I think my Beta 58A could not be older than a few months or maybe one or two years.

Please help me

Thanks and greets

Patrik

You may find the end of this conversation handy, Patrik...

http://line6.com/support/thread/76772?tstart=30

...In particular the comments from Pit (Herrguenther) regarding extending your Beta 58A capsule's "pogo stick" pins by heating.

Before trying anything so drastic, however, I'd recommend a long investigation of whether there's any "roughness" or "extra" metalwork around your combination's "barrel" join. (Careful comparison with your friend's THH12 handheld would be useful.)

This sort of imprecision would be enough to create a few microns of extra "contact preventing" distance, even though the capsule feels as though it's fully screwed on.

If this proves to be the case, a few minutes of careful work with a nail file or emery board (followed by scrupulous removal of metallic "dust" with a cotton "bud" applicator lightly moistened with a "WD"-type contact cleaner, ...then equally scrupulous clean-up with a dry applicator) should do the trick.

Hello RonMarton,

thank you for your request. I tested it again and I think you'll right - this is a contact-problem. So are there different revisions of the transmitter? Did Line6 made a mistake and the newer ones are ok?

I sent one of my V70 to distributor a few days ago maybe he will chance to a newer one?

I'm just a Line 6 "fan", Patrik, with no other connection to the company. (Click on my pink avatar for more details.)

It's my belief that a bit more "tolerance" was engineered into the later THH12 handhelds that ship with the newer V75 systems, seemingly yielding a better "fit" with third party capsules.

I'm fairly sure that the earlier "V70" THH12's (of which I own eight) were always supposed to be made to the same specification, but it wouldn't be surprising to find that the actual precision of manufacture improved later in the run.

So your thought of your distributor exchanging to a later one may (but only "may") help.

I still think it is worth looking closely at a slight "fix" to your existing capsule and transmitter, which reminds me...

...I forgot to mention checking the actual "freely springing" action of the Beta 58's pogo pins. Even when screwing onto Shure handhelds, I have had pins that remained "stuck" only half out.

The fix for that is a drop (but only a drop) of "WD"-type kerosene-based lubricant from the head of a pin onto the base of the pogo pin, followed by very gentle exercising of that pin with the end of a cotton applicator.

As ever, scrupulous clean-up afterwards and avoidance of finger residue on contacts is vital.

I tested it with a little metal on the pins to enlarge tehem - it works! So you'll absolutely right.

I wait for my first V70 and look what the distirbutor did or if he exchanged something, then i will sent my secon one too. I don't like to make this by myself because of warranty.

Thanks a lot!

Woo-hoo !

If money allows, I can personally testify that spending a little extra cash by getting your dealer (seeing you are "there" already) to exchange your second V70 to the later V75 would be a great move.

Doing this will not only "future-proof" existing V70's by allowing USB upgrades via Line 6 "Monkey", but also your mics will gain more features, ...including enhanced RF diagnostics for avoiding interference.
