OT: The saddest of all keys
by phil_m on 2012-08-28 07:48:57

I was bored, so I created a poll: http://line6.com/support/polls/1164

What'sthe saddest key to play in?

Hi Phil, I've never got this presumption that you can have a "sadder" key than another. All keys are relative. That is, one piece of music will sound relatively the same when transposed.

Not true...There is one key that make people instantly weep when they hear it...

Others to a lesser degree...

@ Phil - I got your movie reference - and the answer is so simple if you've seen the movie.  The saddest of all keys that when you hear it causes people to weep instantly is D minor.  Doesn't everyone know that?

@ Studiox19 - you mistakenly took his joke poll as a serious question.  But as a classically trained musician since the age of 4, I can say that in more cases than not, when you change a key up or down, you do indeed change the mood of the overall piece.

Combination of the "righ"t key with the "right" combination of notes on the "right" instruments played in the "right" tempo can certainly create moods of are types from happy to tear-jerking sadness.  Just using one composer for example - try Mozart.  Find any of his pieces of music and sample a section that makes you feel a certain way, then put it into a pitch changing program that does not change tempo and see if you feel the same mood when listening back.

This applys to all forms of music including simple pop tunes.  Look at the mood difference between Neil Sedaka's original version of "Love Will Keep Us Together" in comparsion to The Captain & Tennille's version.  Or how different the mood is between Michael Jackson's "Billy Jean", compared to Chris Cornell's version.

Yeah, I agree about D minor key, it is very sad!!! But What about G minor key??? If you are painful because of love and you play in G minor, instantly you would like to take a gun and shoot yourself with it!!! (and the girl too) ajajajajaja. Just Kidding.

PD: Glad to see you here again Neal.

I can not answer the poll.

Ab minor and Eb minor are missing, they get my vote.

You're not confusing this with the "Brown Noise" from South Park are you?  Check out these Youtube videos. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eI7QwqPeVxg">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eI7QwqPeVxg">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eI7QwqPeVxgor http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcwdywTnfeI">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcwdywTnfeI">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcwdywTnfeI I'm not sure if the Brown Noise is sad or just plain disgusting.

Question:  Can the Pod HD 500 duplicate the Brown Noise ?

To me it is a minor because it is the chord every beginner starts with. It's so easy to access and so often used. I think I have heard it is the mostly used chord.

But yes, d minor is at least as sad to me if I think about it, because the standard d minor chord at the first 3 frets sounds higher and may result in higher emotions.

I haven't seen the video, it's just my emotion.

I think it all depends on what you're sad about.  Dmin with a Fender amp is the she left me key, Amin with the JTM-45 Marshall is the I miss her key, Emin with a Super Lead Marshall is the I lost my job key, Drop D min with a Treadplate is the b**ch left me and took everything key.  Obviously these keys apply only to men.  The women's keys are more complex

That's not a key - you have to play the song backwards.
