USB stops working - POD xt & Mac OS X ML
by tajmon on 2012-09-30 10:28:42

Hello guys,

I've got some problems with POD xt (desktop) when it’s connected to my MacBook Air 2012 (with USB 3.0 - not sure if it matters). When I connect the device, turn it on and then change audio output to 'POD xt', it works fine for a while. But after a few secs/mins it stops playing any sounds (from the computer) and any other device connected via USB doesn't work. The same situation happens when I change global audio output for default (internal speakers) and then back to 'POD xt'.

I tried to connect POD to both USB ports - alone, with USB mouse, with USB external drive - but it always stops working when I connect POD and turn it on. When it breaks down USBs ports are 'dead' till machine restart. In system logs console I can find two related entries:

30.09.2012 18:28:09,000 kernel[0]: vtd[0] fault: device 0:20:0 reason 0x6 R:0x23a000

30.09.2012 18:28:09,000 kernel[0]: USBF: 261.883 AppleUSBXHCI[0xffffff80d52af000]::UIMRootHubStatusChange - HSE bit set:5 (1)

I've tried to reinstall drivers, used the latest version (7.1.9), used the previous version (7.1.7), I've reflashed PODxt device firmware (in Line6 Monkey: USB firmware and Flash memory), and even tried to reset MacBook's PRAM and SMC - without any result.

Has anyone had similar problems? Did anyone manage to solve this problem.

Hello. I have a very similar problem.

I bought a new MacBook Pro a month ago, and, as with your Air, it has the latest version of MacOS Mountain Lion, and 3.0 USB ports.

I recently downloaded all the software necessary to use a PODxt Live, and is a process that I know well because I have the PODxt since 2006, and I have used it already with Mac computers with no problems at all.

But now this is what happens: When I connect the PODxt to the Macbook, I can hear the sounds of the computer as long as I do not activate any other application. Once I activate, say Quicktime or Itunes to hear a track to practice guitar, a couple of minutes after the activation I hear a small "blip!" sound and then I cannot hear anythig from the computer. After this, I have checked the midi settings and the PODxt is gone, it says that there is no device connected to the computer. Line 6 monkey or Gearbox do not recognize the PODxt neither. Even worst is that, once this problem happens, the mouse pad of the Macbook fails (the pointer goes slow or jumps), and the last time the problem happened the computer rebooted itself, and in the startup it said that it had to reboot becouse it registered a fatal error. I did have uninstalled and reinstalled all the software, and I did have the same problem again, so I decided to uninstalled everything until Line 6 or somebody comes with a solution, because I do not want to ruin my computer!

On the other hand, the PODxt remained working well during and after these problems.

I believe there's something with the software of Line 6 that does not work well with the new operative system of Mac. I hope is nothing serious. Or could it be the new 3.0 USB ports???    Perhaps we need a new cable for those ports??

Please let me know if you, or somebody else has a solution. I let you know if I find one.

Hello!

I just wanted to say that I am experiencing the EXACT same problem.

Same error code, same behaviour with keyboard and mouse (not working momentarily after my Line6 UX2 stops working).

I've got a Macbook Pro Retina (= USB 3.0).

The UX2 is working perfectly with my iMac and older Macbook Pro.

Hello,

I have written directly to Line 6 about this problem. I hope they come with a solution soon. I let you know what they answer.

By the way, my PODxt Live was working great too with my older Black 2008 MacBook .

Anyone with this issue tried using it with a powered hub, external to the macbook? May be useful to help pinpoint whether its a USB 3 issue?

Im also getting this problem with my UX1 on my brand new MacBook pro, can't do anything about it at all, tried everything, any fix yet?

Hello again,

Line 6 answered. They sent me the link of a USB Audio Troubleshooting:

http://line6.com/support/docs/DOC-4282">http://line6.com/support/docs/DOC-4282">http://line6.com/support/docs/DOC-4282

I'll see if the recomendations there solve the problem.

You check the link too and let me know if you could fix the problem.

Ok, I've had my logic board replace twice (other issues) and I'm still getting the same error.

Sound is working perfectly for a while, but then suddenly stops.

For some reason, this always happens when I press play on XLN Audio demos. A flash player on their web page.

Which is leading me to believe that the Flash VM is initializing the audio interface is some way that is causing it to fail.

And this happens regardless of connecting directly to USB port or to a USB 3.0 hub. I didn't try a USB 2.0 hub, I could do that.

Now, the part that really disturbs me; all USB ports die!

The USB controller stops working until I restart my computer.

And the IO USB Controller driver in OSX is outputting a console message:

1/1/12 7:11:46.000 AM kernel[0]: USBF:1046.276AppleUSBXHCI[0xffffff81c472c000]::UIMRootHubStatusChange - HSE bit set:5 (1)

Now, doing a search on Google for "UIMRootHubStatusChange" yields a few results.

Doing a search on "UIMRootHubStatusChange HSE bit" returns only one hit, this forum thread.

Some investigative work with Google leads me to believe that this issue is not unique to Line 6 (although I can't confirm if it is the same problem, or only similar symptoms) so I'm not entirely blaming Line 6.

BUT! Line 6, you really need to investigate this! Get your engineers to find out why the hell the USB controller driver stops working!

And that USB troubleshooting guide is of no help whatsoever. This is not a user error in any way, this is a hardware/OS/driver error. And you really should look into it, or soon no Mac users will want to buy your devices.

I have found a solution. At least it is working for me.

While searching on Google, I stumbled upon a thread about a similar problem with M-audio Fast Track.

They solved it by connecting the audio interface to a USB 2.0 hub, instead of USB 3.0 hub or port.

http://forums.m-audio.com/showthread.php?36697-USB-3-0-for-the-macbook-pro">http://forums.m-audio.com/showthread.php?36697-USB-3-0-for-the-macbook-pro">http://forums.m-audio.com/showthread.php?36697-USB-3-0-for-the-macbook-pro

I tried the same thing here and so far it works. Maybe it crashes later, or right after I post this But at least it gives some kind of hope that it will be usable.

So, my setup right now:

Line 6 UX2 connected to USB 2.0 hub (7 ports).

That hub is connected to a USB 3.0 hub (4 ports).

That hub is connected to a Macbook Pro Retina.

Quite ridiculous, but working nicely so far

I will try that.

Well, it worked for a week. Now the problem is back.

Guess it's time to move to another audio interface maker.

Sorry for that =(

I'm going to try with a new USB cable. Mine is 7 years old. Perhaps that is the problem.

Same problem here.  UX1, new late 2012 Mac Mini, Mountain Lion.
