by freiman on 2012-11-20 08:10:27

hello, I would like to connect an external over drive pedal to my HD400...I read the manual but still don´t get it.

can you please give a more detail explanation about where, how to connect this external pedal and how to set it?

thank you

How you plugiin an external effects pedal really depends on what effect is in the pedal,  There are lots of views on the web as to which order effects go in but as a rule of thumb

  • Wahs, distortions, and overdrives go between the guitar and amp
  • Reverbs and delays go after the amp (or in the Effects loop with a 'real' amp)
  • EQs, compressors, modulations and filters can go either side depending on taste

For your overdrive pedal there are really two ways to hookup the cables.

The first is easiest ...

Guitar ---> OD Pedal In -->  OD Pedal Out  -->  Pod Input

If you want to use one of the effects in the FX1 slot before the OD pedal then you need to use the FX Loop.  the hookup is

Guitar -->  Pod Input --> Pod FX Send -->  OD Pedal In -->  OD Pedal Out --> Pod FX Return

I am not 100% where the wah goes in the effect chain on the HD400 but I think that this second hookup would put the Wah before the OD, which many people prefer.

In terms of setup for the second hookup

  • Make sure the Loop switch is set to 'Stomp' (2.4 and 4.5)
  • Use the L/Mono sockets for FX Send and Return (2.4)
  • Within setup,
    • Set the FX Loop Routing to 'Pre' to put the overdrive before the amp model (4.6)
    • Leave the FX Send and Return Levels at 100% (4.6)
    • Leave the Mix set to 100% (4.6)

All numbers refer to the section of the Advanced Manual for the HD400 available from this site.

Use the FX Loop footswitch to turn the loop on.

thank you very much....other question:

with the first set up, the HD volume pedal will affect my OD or only with the second set up?

The volume pedal can be placed before the amp (pre) or after (post). With the volume in the Post position then both setups would behave identically:  it will affect the loudness of the preset but should not change the basic tone.

With the volume pedal in Pre, the game changes ...

  • In the first scenario, your OD would always be before the volume pedal. Therefore the effect would be similar to having the pedal in the post position.
  • In the second scenario ...... well to be honest I am not 100% sure.  I cannot find any reference that says the exact effects order for the HD400.   I would expect that the volume control in the 'Pre' position would be the very first effect.  That being so:  the FX Loop is between the FX1 and FX2 blocks so therefore the level of signal being fed to the overdrive pedal would be controlled by the volume pedal.  This time, the amount of distortion would be reduced along with the volume level and the tone would change.  Iniitialy reducing the pedal would reduce distortion but have little effect on the volume.  After a certain point, the volume would reduce also.

The information above may not be current, and you should direct questions to the current forum or review the manual.
