Backtrack + Mic will not auto record
by greggo on 2012-11-29 21:18:11

I may be doing something wrong as I am new to the Backtrack. Anyhow, I get the blue flashing light (2 seconds between flashes) but it will not record with my guitar plugged in, the blue light never goes to a solid blue light. If I unplugged everything and speak directly into mic I get the solid blue light but nothing seems to get recorded. I can do the Force Record when my guitar is plugged in and all is well. What the heck do I do, to get it to auto record my guitar?

Have you used the BackTrack Setup Utility to adjust the input sensitivity? There are different settings - sounds like you should choose the most sensitivie setting, i.e. the one that will detect the weakest signal. If you are plugging a guitar directly to the BackTrack input you will need to have the most sensitive setting because the output signal direct from a guitar, without any preamp or DI box involved, is quite weak.

Thanks Silverhead, I did try that. I also did a firmware update and that seemed to help, I finally got it to auto record but it was spotty and poor quaulity and it stopped reording after about 15 seconds of steady playing. I'll play with the settings a bit more and let ya know how it worked out. I'm plugging the guitar into the "In" jack and using the "Out" to go my amp

You realize that this setup will record the dry signal from your guitar - not the sound you hear from your amp.

Yes, I am aware of that. I just want to make sure it will auto record for now. My amp (Fender Mustang III) has In & Out on the back and I will try to set it up with that afterwards. I also have an old Line6 Floor Pod. I'll put the BackTrack in line with the Floor POD later on too. But right now, my dang job is getting in the way of playin' again.

I've tried everything and I still cannot get it to auto record with my guitar plugged in the "In" jack. It will record with nothing plugged into the unit off the Mic and I can Force Capture to record with my guitar plugged into the "In" jack. Is my Backtrack + Mic defective?

If you use the output signal from either of the devices you plan to use later (your amp, the Floor Pod) I don't think you will have any problem. The output signal from these devices will be much stronger than the dry, unprocessed signal from the guitar itself. Unless you have a specific reason for recording the dry signal I would proceed to your 'later' setup now. Any settings you make with teh Backtrack device now, in order to capture the weak signal, will have to be undone later when you want to capture the processed signal from your other devices. The Backtrack setting for the dry guiitar signal will not work well with the stronger signal.

Boy, I feel stupid. I usually play my guitar with the volume way down on the guitar's volume knob (around 2 or 3). Simply adjusting the volume knob on the guitar (around 7 or 8) did the trick. Now all is well. Thanks for the help silverhead.

I was going to reply to this yesterday and ask about your guitar volume, and then I thought "I don't want to sound like a jerk."  I guess there really is no such think as a stupid question.  I have done plenty of things just as obvious and spent hours looking for the hard solution when the easy one was right there.
