On discounts and predictions...
by scheater5 on 2012-12-27 11:15:17

Short version: JTVs are heavily discounted on Sweetwater.  Anyone think there's something new coming down the pipe, possibly at Winter NAMM?

Elaboration:

I've wanted a JTV-89 for a while now, but a few things have held me back.  1) I'm a seven string player and 2) I'm a professional musician of meager means.  #2 is the biggie, as I would mostly use a variax on cover gigs (as opposed to original shows), and it didn't seem like I'd get a good return on investment when my Carvin 7's were getting the job done now.  (I fake alternate tunings in 7-string-standard, letting me do songs in Drop D or half-step-down without retuning live)

BUT, I'm also a techy and a gear head, and an advocate of digital technology for live music.  (Bogner said the tube amp hasn't changed much in 30 years, but the computer has done nothing but advance)  So, I'm torn.

On the one hand, deep discounts usually mean new stock.  Basic economics.  Out with the old, in with the new.  I've long thought Line 6 would have some new toys at 2013 Winter Namm and this all but confirms (in my mind) that there are going to be new Variaxes.  And hopefully they will overcome some of the problems people have had, and usher in a more perfect digital guitar.

On the other hand, deep discounts mean affordability now.  I can't afford a $2k guitar, but a $1k guitar with "three easy payments" seems like a more justifiable purchase.

So, I'm sure Line 6 isn't making any announcements until they, well, make the announcement.  This is about speculation and educated guesses.  What's Line 6 got in store for the immediate future?

the literally just released new versions of the 69 (69s) and 59 (59p) and support confirmed that an 89 with an FR trem was in the works...

don't think they are blowing them out to replace them...

but i could see the price coming down a bit, as they've recouped some R&D and over time things tend to get less expensive to make...

I am curious as to what NAMM will turn up... possibly new lower priced models or something else new...

but i'm pretty certain the current models aren't going away.

Aw man, and here I was hoping someone would talk me out of buying one!!!  My G.A.S. is acting up...

Thanks for the info on the Floyd though, hadn't heard that.

I think the real reason is that the economy is down, musical instrument sales are down, the Christmas sales figures are poor, and they are trying to move product. As a business owner, I can testify that 2012 was poor, and with the insane goverment we've got here in the US, there isn't much optimism that things will be better soon.

Are you talking about the $200 off? That's part of the Dream Rig promotion that's been going on since September or so. All dealers are offering that because it's a Line 6 initiated deal.

No, this is in addition to that.

The $200 "Line 6 Savings" is in effect for another three days, but there is an additional "Sweetwater Savings" of $600

that's code for "the difference between the list price and the street price" hahah

usually anyway... i'm pretty sure that Line6 uses a MAP policy (minimum advertised price)

meaning that with the exception of clearance etc... the price is the same everywhere.

The $600 Sweetwater Savings is new.  At least newly altered.  They were more than $1100 until after Christmas, I've been watching the price.

Edit: Hm...I'm pretty sure in the days leading up to Christmas it was closer to $1200...but Google Cache says on December 11th it was $1100, with "$800 Sweetwater Savings" and no "Line 6 Savings"

I could swear it has changed in the last few days, cus I got all excited what I saw it was $1100...

About 6 years ago the price of the Variax bass was ~ $1,400. Then I started seeing them on line for $300 new. I got mine at Sweetwater for $300. Steal of the century for me. I guess they were not selling. Good for me though.

We don't really know what is going on with the JTVs as they are adding new models so I assume they are being successfull. It would be nice if Line 6 wanted to get more people interested in their products and lowered the prices. One can hope. We'll see. I love my JTV 60K and would like a 59K if prices go down.

By the way, for what its worth....as regards a number of threads I've seen here. My JTV 69 works great- never had a problem with it. And I just love to play it.

Well then we are both Mr. Obvious because that was bound to happen sooner or later... Im also glad its happening as its another viable option for me once it does. And keep them prices dropping I say... Bringer down low and slow captain

pretty nice looking, but i would hope they'd add some color options like they did for the 59p and 69s

As I suspected, that image is doctored. Poorly.
Anyway, the fact that it's already being offered (I doubt they're shipping already)

is positive. It won't be long before I can order mine

Sorry for the delay, I can scan it but it's just an ad and the 89 is behind all the other guitars so if it really is an 89F you couldn't tell from the picture anyway.

Re: On discounts and predictions...
by spikey on 2013-01-10 20:42:49

Yea I noticed it hidden behind the others- Since Line 6 has released its picture in Guitar Player adds they should also show it on their website as well. But then, they dont have me or some other God Like Talent to properly lead them in the right directions....

Re: On discounts and predictions...
by scheater5 on 2013-01-11 15:18:21

Well, the annoucement on the front page says that the JTV-89F is coming, with a firmware update ("HD") to follow.  I gotta say, tantalizing (and appreciated) as that is, I expect some more from Line 6 at NAMM.  I reiterate my appreciation of Line 6's continued updating of existing product (for free, no less), but I seriously hope for some more announcements either leading up to, or at, NAMM.  Then again...I own a Pod and want a JTV-89, so this annoucement doesn't directly effect me.

Re: On discounts and predictions...
by spikey on 2013-01-11 16:42:12

No Scheater5, Im thinking that although the updates are appreciated, they are not for free (on Line 6's side of the house) and they are a better thing for Line 6 than the user.... With time spent included in the updates process, everything they do to update and improve their product "sells" more of their products. That is the bottom line. So it may come acrossed as a freebee for us, but its nothing but work in progress for them on profit margins and increasing their sales numbers. And there is not a thing wrong with that for them, or us. It's just not free....

Re: On discounts and predictions...
by scheater5 on 2013-01-11 21:29:38

True story spikey, but I meant free for us - after all, I'm considering buying a JTV and this is incentive, so it's good for business.  But still, I'm hoping Line 6 has more in their hat.
