The use of a Direct Box
by rychester63 on 2013-01-08 22:44:36

I use a POD HD Desktop  straight to the mixing board or snake  via 1/4 inch left out, Are you suppose to use a direct box in that chain? And why, I went straight to the board or snake with the Pod XT for years and it sounded great. I must add that our snake also had 1/4 inch in's too.

You should use DI when going from 1/4 into the snake. It will still work however depending on the length of the snake you might get some noise and possibly high frequency loss. Going direct into mixer with a regular instrument cable would not need a DI.

Since you already used this setup for years you might be ok although I think it is always better to convert to balanced line when going into mixer, regardless of the distance. I use a cheap behringer DI for this type of setup with my hd500 and it works great for me. I used it for going direct to PA mixer and also for recording, no issues. I use parallel out to connect to my amp for monitoring.

The 1/4" outs from the POD are balanced TRS outputs, so you're using a TRS cable to go to the board, signal loss or noise wouldn't really be much of a concern. If you use a mono cable, it is a good idea to go into a direct box.

How about a combo amp? 1/4 inch TRS out to input of amp? (tech 21 power engine 60) Would this make any difference because amp inputs do not recognize TRS  inputs. do they?

Going into an amp, you'd just want to use a regular mono 1/4" cable.

I assumed that OP was not using TRS cable since it was not mentioned. If that is the case there is no need for DI for going into the mixer.

Surely this would depend on the setup of the Pod on page 3 in settings, and the type of mixer you're using.

My personal preference would be to set it as Studio/Direct and use balanced TRS leads.

However, if I was going straight into an amp, I'd set it as Combo Front and use unbalanced TS leads (this would also work into a mixer with a Hi-z input, but your signal would degrade over distance).

I'm using an HD500, but as far as I know the I/O settings are the same.
