Variax Acoustic into HD500 into DT-25
by bmoyer on 2013-01-15 08:06:21

I'm wondering if anyone has a better solution for this combination of gear to achieve a really good acoustic tone.  I have had some success using the Double Vib model at a very low gain setting and then tweaking with some EQ on the HD500, but it's nowhwere near the clarity and realism I get by using no model at all and going directly into the PA or using an FFFR amp.  The hitch I'm finding with giong to the DT-25 is if you defeat the amp model on the HD500, the DT-25 automatically switches to the topology already selected on Channel B, thereby defeating the intent to play acoustic using no amp model.  Anyone have some success stories to share?  Thanks!

I think your best bet is to set up your acoustic tones with the effects loop block activated, and use the effects send as the output to go to the PA. The DT-25 is always going to be limited when reproducing an acoustic tone because of its speaker and its lack of tweeter.

Speaking from experience I have to give a strong +1 to Phil.  I stubbornly tried for a long time to get a great acoustic sound from my DT-25.  I finally gave in and used the effect loop method and felt stupid for ignoring it for so long.  It just didn't seem ideal to me.  Really though it gives you the best results.  I even have songs where I go from acoustic to electric and it works great.  A little strange having the stage volume go from my amp to my PA monitor, but worth it.

Can you explain how you achived this. Im very new to this. Where do you position the effects loop in the preset chain on the hd 500. I only received my JTV 59 and pod hd500 a few days ago, so its all new.

in your acoustic patch insert the fx loop as the last effect at the end of your chain and after the mixer block, that way you break the connection with the standard output connected to the external amp and you deviate the signal to the send output from where you have to do the connection to the external mixer

Thanks for that.

So I use the FX output jack, direct to the mixer front of house ?. So if I want to switch an electric guitar dirty sound , which outout can I use for that preset.

I am a green horn to all this.

yes, connect the physical FX SEND output to the mixer for your acoustic patch (with FX LOOP at the end of the chain)..

....So if I want to switch an electric guitar dirty sound , which outout can I use for that preset....

for your electric sound patch (without FX LOOP) connect the standard 1/4 OUT LEFT or RIGHT output to your external amp, and both XLR OUT LEFT and RIGHT outputs to the mixer..

I dont want to use an amp for convenience, and hope to run the Electric guitar dirty sound also through the mixer front of house, what should I do in that case.

Thank so much for your help.

just connect one (for mono) or both (if you want stereo) the two 1/4 OUT outputs to the mixer, or connect both (in this case there is no choice) XLR OUT balanced outputs to the mixer (good solution for very long cables and to be able to effectively use the XLR ground lift switch in case you need it)

I`ll try that. Many thanks

So if I use the XLR balanced left and right, do I need to pan them left and right in the output set up screen.

Does it work like this... if I creat an acoustic preset, do I asign that to a foot switch, and same for dirty guitar soundto another footswitch, andthen,  will acoustic preset go through left XLR out, and the dirty channel, go through the right xlr out. Sorry to bother you again.

yes, if you want a stereo signal

not automatically

to have a mono acoustic sound only on the Left XLR OUT you have to set both Pan A e Pan B full Left in the POD mixer block of your ac. patch..

to have a mono electric sound only on the Right XLR OUT you have to set both Pan A e Pan B full Right in the POD mixer block of your el. patch..

the same logic applies if you connect instead the 1/4 OUTs

personally for each patch I would prefer to have a stereo sound and set Pan A & B to left and right as they are by default..

I don't feel the need for separate FOH mixer channels settings for the acoustic sound and for the electric one.. I want just a general flat response from the PA

It's enough for me to do all the eq, pan and other settings directly from the POD

Thanks again.

Im going to have to really study the online manual, it`s still all a bit of a muddle at the moment.

All the best

If you aren't going to use the DT-25 and just go straight to the board with your electric, you don't need to use the fx loop.  You still can if you want more flexibility to mix the acoustic at the board, but you don't need to.

As for you question about patch setup, I have a bank where slot one is my acoustic model then slot two is a Les Paul with a Marshall, slot 3 is a LP with a Mesa and slot 4 is a tele with a Fender.  It gives me flexibility to go from acoustic to electric in the middle of songs from different genres. Two examples are Ice Cream Man and Pink Houses.  Really adds something to the songs to be able to do that.  In fact on Pink Houses I flip the switch to put it in Open G.   I love my rig!  :-)
