Dt25 head with Orange PPC108 1x8" Speaker Cabinet Item ID: Orange108CB

Can anyone tell me if this speaker cab would work with the DT25.....I'm not well versed in speaker wattage vs. amp wattage and simple math would tell me it will NOT work....but I thought I'd throw it out there in the hopes that it is ok....because I'd like to pick it up for home use ( 4x12 cab is at rehersal space).

Again the cab is

Orange PPC108 1x8" Speaker Cabinet

Item ID: Orange108CB

Thanks,

Todd

PS

Orange is 20watt RMS 8ohms

DT25 head is 25 watts (but I'm sure you knew that! )

the wattage is a little low, but i think it'd work just fine.

as long as the amp is high quality you can go over the watts usually...

20 watts @ 8 ohms...That will work just fine. It's slightly underrated for the DT25 running in AB mode (around 25 watts)...if you run the DT25 in Class A, power drops to around 15 watts...Anyhoo, for home use that would be fine...You would likely also get a lot of good breakup color with a ratings match like that...

I hope that's the case....just want it for "bedroom/ home " playing and tweaking (i.e. really want to use that new DTEditor for Mac, but don't want to lug the whole half stack home, etc)

This might be a dumb question but if you plug a 50 watt head into this 20 watt cab but just play at minium volume, will that be harmful to either?

Well, the DT25 is actually 25 watts when running Class AB Pentode mode...theoretically...Bias is generally 70-80% of that...So call it right around 20 watts...If you change to Class AB triode mode, then the power drops a bit...Class A pentode is right around 15 watts and triode mode is a little less....

Speakers have two ratings...RMS and peak...99% of the time the peak rating double the RMS rating...As long as the signal is not clipping (DC current), any speaker can be run well past the RMS rating. The nice thing about a tube amplifier is that they basically can't put out DC current...It's the nature of the beast...When a tube maxes out, it compresses and you still get a sine wav...

You would need to be a little careful with a 50 watt head...The amount of power that any amplifer puts out is proportional to the master volume (input signal)...Comfortable home listening is actually on a couple of watts of power...two cabs in parallel would be better with a 50 watter...but no problem for low to moderate volume...

If it makes you feel any better, professional PA systems that are properly powered actually use amplifers that are 2-4 times the RMS rated power of the speakers they run...In that application it is all about clean headroom...amps never clip and the speakers never see compromised power...It is really amazing how much power a speaker take past it's rating when the signal is clean...

utf-8''IMG_2766.jpgutf-8''IMG_2767.jpgthanks....I guess I'll get specific on this...

I got the Orange speaker cab today - purpose is to bring home the DT25 from rehearsal space to tweak without lugging the 4x12 cab.  Alas head is at practice space.  I have an Atomic Reactor MB-50 head here at home that I thought maybe I could plug in to the Orange just to test ride....2 kids and wife are in bed so volume wont be much more than listening to a radio in the background...but the Atomic has a speaker 1 and speaker 2 output with a bracket about both that says 8 ohms and Orange is rated 8 ohms....so does that mean use one cable or 2?

If I am recalling correctly, the MB-50 is that 2x6L6 mono head they came out with several years back...It's mono, so one cable is all you need...
