Help: New amp Alto TOURMAXSXM112A‏
by alfmetal70 on 2013-01-16 05:36:09

Hello, I bougth Alto TOURMAXSXM112A‏. Really very good amp quality thinking in the price and the sound, the best product for this price (like 550 dollars). I proved music, the guitar without the POD and sound beautiful. The guitar that I recorded and reproduce for the amp sound awesome (drive and clean).

I have a big problem with drives from the POD HD because now sound very "HD" and not natural, a very big difference in comparrison with my old valve poweramp or the little homestudio monitors.

Now sound like "perfect" and digital, I lost that natural sims.

  • Preamp sims sound so brigth and artificial.
  • Poweramp+pre sims the same.
  • The cabs sims are sounding so deep and unnatural.
  • The output is "studio/direct" and I proved the others also
  • All the setting are from factory (also I proved my personal settings)
  • The best options for the POD HD for my ears in the Alto are: "Full range" and "Flat".

Plase help me, is the first time that I use the POD HD with this type of amp, so a good presets made for this context can help me so much. I now that is not the amp because I proved also the Zoom G from a friend and sound better than the POD HD , for that I think that are my presets or the configuration. Greetings

Make sure you are running the HD into the FX loop (not the guitar input) for your puposes.

I'm not sure if you are in the US, but I think you can get those for $299 all the time. I've seen good reviews for the price point($299).

I´m from Chile (South America), and that is the price on every store, very expensive in comparisson with your country.

Here that is sheap, for example one amp Lexsen ot Gemini that are very bad cost like 200 or 400 dollar depending the model, and don´t have comparison with the Alto.

The reallity in my country, almost in every case is expensive, is high cost products and low salaries. Some families only have 320 dollars per months...

Thank for the idea, I will prove that

Basically what you have been doing is sending a modeled amp into another amp and through the power amp.  It's not going to sound good from what I hear.  For instance, you wouldn't output a rteal amp into another amp.  That's why it won't sound good.

It looks like your best option (with that amp) is to use the HD strictly for effects and that link can show you how to do that pretty optimally.  Or you might look into another amp alternative.

I proved with the distortions "stompboxes" from the POD HD and was the same, the weird part is that was more easy to use with the Zoom G. I will try this nigth again and tell you tomorrow what happend. Thank a lot for the help

never buy audio equipment without first try..
but maybe you were lucky .. who knows?..

why have you abandoned your old valve poweramp given that it sounded so good?

anyway you have now essentially a 400 W FRFR monitor, a totally different amplification solution, and obviously you have to make brand new patches, ar at least tweak the old ones which as they are can't sound absolutely the same as before..

each time you change equipment you have to take into account some time for adaptation, that's normal..

so don't despair
take your time, and you'll see that good results will come

the Zoom always sounds the same, even if you connect it to your grandmother's old radio..
the POD, instead .. luckily changes a lot depending on what you connect to it, and where you connect it..

it's a very dynamic and responsive device..

Hello Hurghanico, I needed change my old amp becayse the poweramp and the cab had more than 40 kilos... I wanted now something more easy to carry, and this Alto Tourmax have aprox. 11 kilos. That is the only reason.

I have the conclutions. I could have a great tone then to prove some changes, I was very impressive with the final result, much clarity, good presence, good dinamyc, I needed use with the "cabs, mic and preamps sims", giving differents eqs from the preamp section. Thanks for the ideas. My conclution is: The Alto Tourmax is a great monitor for play in the room, record or use for monitor in a homestudio context, is really high quality sound for not much money. I don´t now, and I don´t recommend for use with band because have a mid response not good enough, is something very flat and for "studio" context.

Finally was a good invertion, but... nothign is perfect... then to play some minutes, finally with a good tone the speaker started to fail a fu#$&% wierd noise, even if I played with minimal volumen... sounded like when the speaker are breaking, very dissapointed with something that have "professional" on the brand...

So I am speaking with the company now because I have my money back, and now I don´t now what amp buy. So now the reccomend for good amps for the POD HD. Greetings

Hi alfmetal70

I understand very well the issue of weight, in fact it is one of the reasons why I use a pod and not more a complete real rig ..

personally I'm not a big fan of typical stage monitor systems, or typical PA active speakers..

I always preferred good keyboard amps as FRFR systems, I believe they are more robust than PA monitors, and resist better to high peaks that can be generated from devices like the POD directly connected to them..

generally, a monitor is designed for a sound controlled by the mixer..
a dedicated amplifier instead is designed to directly receive the raw signal of an instrument..

I use a Roland keyboard amp and I like it..

that said, and given your previous experiences, I think you'll feel in heaven if you buy a DT25 or DT50..

but to be honest I do not know how much it would weigh

Yes, the weigh is going a very good factor, for me so much because with the years I have less time for play with a band so I am going direct in a way to need a very small amp only for the room, but the problem is that I prefeer 12" speakers for the response on the bass and mid freqs. 10" or less size speakers for me are very uncomfortable sounds, in especially on the highs freqs. For that point I want to buy somehitng with not much weigh but continuing using 12" speakers.

I will prove this weekend keyboeard amp and will see the DT series. Thank for the orientation, greetings
