Direct recording with HD500 and a power amp (Rocktron/Matrix)?
by gotmywork on 2013-02-14 03:32:23

Hi fellow Line6 users.

This is a recording question for you audiophiles out there.

How do you record the sweet sound of the HD500 after being amplified by a power amp? Both the Rocktron and the Matrix power amps (which seem to be getting raving reviews on their compatibility with the HD series) do NOT have a "line out" output. At this time, for a number of practical reasons, I do not want to mic a speaker. I've been using my HD500 recording direct into a Delta audio card and with my new M-Audio C400 and it's been great. But I want to capture the "power amped" sound.

Is there a practical approach to recording the signal of the power amp? Is there another power amp brand/model I should be looking into to be able to do that if it's not possible with the ones mentioned above?

What is your own solution?

Any help from more knowledgeable members would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers

That is kind of what the power amp models are for.

You can always use a DI box, which is the case with any amp.

Thanks for your reply.

Do you mean to connect the speaker output of the poweramp to a DI box and record the signal?

Thanks

Really... you want to go through a power amp just to supposedly get the added "tone" from it?

I play through either a Crate Power Block (live) or a TubeWorks MosValve (home) using the HD500 "Line outs" but always record direct (XLR) from the HD500.

I personally wouldn't even consider trying to add the power amp into the mix. Both models mentioned do have "line-outs" but that's no guarantee the "tone" is on those line-outs without delving into each amps schematic.

And like previously mentioned, that's what the "Pre" vs "Full" amp models are supposed to do.

I think you'd get much better results micing up your cabinet but I understand if "loudness" is any issue with neighbors or family.

P.S. They do make "Power Soaks" so you can crank your amp but keep the 'actual' sound level quite low.

Just my 2 cents

I agree with scotty, I'd stick a 57 on the cab and run it into a nice pre and record that. capturing the moving air is exciting!
