Music is Stuttering When I Plug my POD HD400 in via USB
by flamster on 2013-02-16 04:01:13

Hey there,

I've recently got myself the POD HD400 and all is good (well except I can't get it to update to 2.1 without turning it into a brick).

However, when I plug it into my laptop via USB, I am able to change its tones etc, but whenever I try and play music (youtube, iTunes), it stutters roughly every minute for about 2-3 seconds until it continues smoothly. When the music / video is stuttering, my guitar is unaffected. Has anyone experienced this? Has it got something to do with my soundcard?

One of the main reasons I bought the HD400 was that I would be able to play through my headphones and connect laptop and guitar to play along to some music. I also can't record via USB, though this I understand. But perhaps it helps you in any way...

Has anyone got any idea how to circumvent this problem? Or should I use a midi cable to connect it to the laptop?

Cheers and thank you so much

flamster

Last firmware version for HD400 is 2.01, 2.10 is for HD500 just in case it wasn't typo.

Have you tried to use another USB cable to connect your POD and PC? I've got once similar problem with older X3 live and it was because of bad cable. I have HD500 and I also use it to play some play-alongs from my computer via USB and I didn't have any problem (Windowa 7 64bit professional).

I ordered a new USB cable and I have been able to update to the newest version! However, the music is still not playing properly when I connect my laptop to the HD400 via USB. Does anyone have any suggestion or idea what I could try to fix this? It's really annoying waiting for the music to stop every 60 seconds.

Is there perhaps a driver I can download outside of line6 monkey? Or some settings I can change on Windows?

Cheers again

Can you try your HD400 with another computer? That way you can figure out if it's HD400 or something in your laptop...

Unfortunately no, I can't (at least not right now). The cabel does at least not seem to be the problem. As far as the pod goes, everything is now up to date. It is also set as the default soundcard for my laptop, so it's not that either. I'm absolutely clueless as of what to do next.

Last think I can see as solution is to uninstall HD400 drivers completely from your computer, restart your computer and instal them again (and follow on-screen instructions when to connect HD400). You can download them directly from this link: http://line6.com/software/readeula.html?rid=4791">http://line6.com/software/readeula.html?rid=4791">http://line6.com/software/readeula.html?rid=4791

I believe it also helps to plug directly to a USB port on the PC... not a hub... not even a powered hub.

I use a laptop so unfortunately no other USB port apart from the 4 existing to chose from (all of which I have tried but to no avail).

Re-installing the drivers also did not work. Unless someone has another idea I'm seriously thinking it is the pod which is causing the problems. That would be absolutely awful:(

Hope someone can find an answer to this. I have three computers in my house. an i7 system built for gaming, an older Core 2 machine I use as a test bed and a core 2 laptop. If I attempt run audio via my HD 300 it has massive problems. My desktop does as the OP describes, periods where the audio stops playing, then starts again, sometimes there is distortion on the audio as it drops out. On the laptop there is no stopping or gapping, but periodically the audio stream will just become static. Reason will play back audio without issue through the normal audio cards in both these cases. The HD300 works as expected for recording and playback on the i7 system.

I have a couple of laptops that I use with my HD400 and HD Desktop...There are quite a few things to check out on a laptop...First would be the bios firmware...The USB controller firmware is usually bundled in the bios firmware....Possible there could be separate firmware, but I have only really seen that on high end workstations...The next bit would be the chipset drivers...Good idea to get the first or second update on that especially for newer machines.

There are a couple of easy things to look for in terms of installed software...If you have a USB printer and/or camera installed, sometimes they will install a little helper that starts up with the OS and some will poll the controller...The problem with this is that USB is an interupt driven architecture and the streaming mode that is used for audio is designated in the USB specification as a casuality of any bulk mode operation...bulk mode is used mainly by printers, cameras, scanners and storage drives...You don't really have to worry about jump drives as long as you have them disconnected while using a USB audio interface...But some of the camera, scanner and printer helper apps can cause a little trouble...usually when these are disconnected, they "should" not interfere...

Another thing you can look at is the power profile for you laptop when plugged in....Specifically, the USB controller in DEvice Manager...If you allow the OS to power down the device to save power, the OS will poll the controller periodocally to see if it is in use...IF this is part of the problem, likely a chipset update would fix it up...or if your laptop has any updates available in regards to power managment...

One thing you can do in Windows is optimize your laptop for audio by creating a hardware profile...that's a fairly advanced subject, but it is a very nice way to optimize a computer for different purposes and you only need to select the profile on boot up...My audio computer boots into Windows with only 92MB of RAM in use...There are some good articles about doing that, but it is a little much to go into in one post...

anyway, good luck...just a few thoughts for you...

Yes Optimize!

I optimized my laptop, which is my only PC (Core 2 Duo, 4 USB 2.0 ports, Vista; 3 GB RAM).

It runs my DAW (Studio One Pro). I also turn off the wireless and close my browser (Firefox) when doing audio.

I have no issues with it nor when running audio with my HD500.

OK... on a rare occasion with a 16 track song and 3 or 4 plugins on each track, then it may stutter a bit.

I've now tried all of it and nothing seems to work, which is beyond frustrating.

Since there seems to be no solution, what other way to connect the hd400 to the computer would you recommend?

Ok I've figured it out! It seems disabling your w-lan helps. Not the best solution, but one that works. Perhaps someone could spread the word? This doesn't seem to be well known...

it actually is well known... unfortunately the mere suggestion is usually met with complete disgust and users aren't usually so willing to accept this as a solution or workaround... so it rarely gets suggested.

i would suggest you download and try a program called slim drivers...

it may be able to update some unseen and forgotten motherboard drivers that might help.
