Using "In ears" with M20 system/L6 Linked
by DavidAlderson on 2013-02-17 21:57:13

I just bought a complete M20 PA, 2 subs, 2 mains, and 4 monitors. I am using the L6 link line.

I need to know if, and how I can also use our "in ears" with the system. Each Monitor is dedicated to a player in the band, but we use in ears for click, and recorded backing tracks.

Obviously the drummer needs click in his ears, as do I when I start a song solo to a click.

Also, can anyone explain how I would keep the click out of the mains when using tracks? Out click is on the left channel, tracks on the right.

Thanks for any help in advance.

David

You can use the multi track recorder. If you have your track as separate mono files and you assign mono channel presets to the files you can turn the click track down in the mains and up in the monitor. The monitor send should be un- linked. Copy the playback/ click track to an SD card as split stereo ( one  .L and one .R file) into a folder, name the files 1_filename.L.wav and 2_filename.R.wav, press the "Record" hardware button, select the folder in the menu at left upper corner. Naming the files "1_xyz..., 2_abc..., 3_zxy...." is a way to tell the M20d to which inputs the files are assigned to. If you have a file in the recorder named 1_test.wav it will play through the input channel assigned to input 1. You can see the assigned input in Setup mode.

Thank you for the answer on the tracks question. I'm still trying to get my brain around your solution, but it seems this will prevent me from recording onto a SD card when playin a show, yes, no?

Is there a way to run the tracks from my macbook pro, and acomplish my goal? I'd like to be able to record the shows. Also, I'm not sure if I would want "Click" in the Floor monitors, I hope to use in ears for that purpose. Guess I'd be worried about the click, and count off etc. being heard by the audience.

That is correct, when you play back a multi trck recording you can not record. If you play back from your macbook you could plug left and richt into, e.g., 15 and 16 and turn the channel that has the click up in the monitor and down in the mains.

You could also use the headphone out and mute the click track but press solo. This way you hear it in the headphones but not in the mains.

Thanks, that will work?

Any ideas on using the in ears?

Why do you use floor monitors and in ears together?

We completly switched from monitors to in ears. No more wedges on stage, so nobody in the audience hears a click.

Play the tracks including clicks over Mac book, iPod or iPhone - there are several good Apps for organizing tracks in tracklists. Connect it to 15/16 on M20d and you are free to mix it to the aux channels or mains as you want.

If you want additional monitor wedges on the stage, you're running short on aux channels on the M20d. You could put the main mix to the monitors, that gives a good balanced sound level on the stage. The personal mix for each band member you put only on the in ears, which are connected to M20d Aux Channels.

You could also use the headphone out and mute the click track but press solo. This way you hear it in the headphones but not in the mains. ???

Could you expound on this? Do you mean that I could run a 1/4 inch cable from the HeadPhones Out on the M20d, into the drummers in ear system (shure), mute the Click in the mains, and floor wedges, and get a mix in his ears that included the click? Don't quite get the press solo.

Yes. In perform view you see a button on the top that is labeled "Show Solo Buttons" if you press this button and then the headphone symbols in the encoder strip (solo) you hear the slolo'd in the headphones. If yo mute the the channels (hide solo buttons-> mute) you still hear them in the headphone but not in the mains,
