Line 6 Rhythm and Blues

Studio Ace Guitarist, Bernie Chiaravalle, has been on countless albums and has held the spot as Michael McDonald’s guitarist since 1988. Currently on tour with Hall and Oates, the Nashville resident had his own number one hit, “Speak”, in 1999. In addition to his many album credits as a player, Bernie has also been the longtime writing partner of Michael McDonald. He uses Line 6 gear in the studio and on the stage, and has been since the introduction of the first POD in 1998. His current Line 6 faves are Variax 500, Variax 700, and the award-winning PODxt.

Where did you first hear about Line 6?
With the introduction of the 1st Pod. When it came out I grabbed it right away.

What Line 6 gear are you using and how are you using it?
I am using a Variax 500 & 700 along with a PODxt. I ended up getting all the Model Packs as well. In the studio I use the Pod exclusively for recording and the Variax. Live I am using just the Variax.

How have our products changed the way you work?
Michael had just finished recording the Motown record and even before hearing it, I knew that Variax was the right guitar. And Mikes music anyway it’s R&B, it’s soft rock then we can get into some down and dirty blues. It can get aggressive. So that guitar really just covers so many spectrums. Musically it has changed everything, but it’s also convenient, when flying you don’t want to bring 3 or 4 guitars. It’s great to have this one guitar that covers it all. I like to record and I write a lot so to be able to dial up any guitar you can think about is wonderful.

What is your favorite Line 6 amp model, effect…?
On the PODxt I favor the British sounds, I like the mid range cut. On the guitars I like the 335, Tele, Strat and the sitar.
