I've really been enjoying using my Powercab with my real acoustic guitars and using acoustic guitar IRs downloaded to the powercab to give them more depth. Since I quit my major loud band a couple of years ago, I have not used either of my Variax's. I pulled one out and thought how I had never tried an acoustic guitar IR with the Variax. So, a couple of questions.....

	1) Should I put the IR first in the line on my Helix before any FX, preamps, etc?

	2) When I was in my loud band I was using loud tube amps and the Helix was only for FX, 4CM. I used the Variax for sitar, slide tunings and other kind of exotic things but never really liked the acoustic guitar sounds. Then it dawned on me that playing through a 2 X 12 guitar cab and real tube amps sounds great for electric guitars and Variax electric models but of course acoustics would sound a little weird. So, has anyone tried using acoustic models with say an acoustic Martin IR and then through the Powercab FRFR? IT seems like that would give a nice new dimension to the Variax acoustic models.

	Thanks

	Rick

	Hi guys,

I got this JTV 89F. I was able to install the workbench - tone locker and got it working. However, when I change something in the Variax Editor, and I try to sync the settings from the workbench to the guitar and press the "write selected models to Tyler Variax", it gives me a Midi Timeout message - it says Your Tyler Variax has stopped responding. Please try resetting the power and click "Refresh" in the tone locker. I tried resetting everything multiple times, including my laptop. Still not working.

	Please help! Thanks.

My hope is to have 2 jtv's both running on firmware 1.71 I was originally going to use the same method I used getting my first JTV back to firmware 1.71 which was to use monkey to roll back the firmware, but I cannot get monkey to run on the older computer I used before, so I'm hoping that cloning the instrument might work...thanks anyone for your help...Brett

I know this seems to be a "not recommended" topic to pursue, but I'm not worried about warranty support or anything like that.

I thought the JTV-89F would be perfect since it has 24 frets and a Floyd.

But I simply can not stand the neck on this guitar... it's as flat as an aircraft carrier and way too thin to be comfortable.

I've asked before about a replacement neck, but last time I checked, there wasn't a viable option out there.

I've been really considering to transplant the electronics from a JTV-89F into a PRS SE Custom 24 Floyd.

However, I just noticed that the scale lengths are slightly different.

The JTV-89F is a 25 1/2" scale length and the PRS is a 25" scale length.

So my question is how much of a difference will that 1/2" make to the Variax models?

Is it a big and noticeable difference or not so bad?

Is it something I can somehow adjust for in the software?

Another alternative I've thought of is to get a JTV-69 and swap the neck to a 24 fret, and maybe swap out the trem for a Floyd.

This seems to be the easier option, though more costly since I don't already have a JTV-69.

	Any suggestions on this dilemma?

	Thanks in advance!

1st post here. Just wanted to take a min to thank everyone here for a bunch of great ideas and insight over the past few months that I have been following. I usually sit back and just absorb the info unless I have something to bring to the table. Today is that day. I have had my 59 for about 9 months and absolutely love it. The ONLY issue I have had has been the low E "plink" ....drove me nuts. I did some research on here and through Graph Tech support and decided to take the plunge. I can't get enough of this guitar now. If there is interest, I'd be more than happy to share my experience with the swap as there were a few mods that I had to do....the Ghost is a bit wider (about .020") and obviously the wiring. Thanks again for all the help on more than a few occasions.

Helix Stadium has been released and it seems that the time has come for a new JTV guitars.

1) Switching to some modern tremolo system(tremolo by Tremoline or something like that) would be nice. You can't switch on your own because of the piezos.
2) Adding a killswitch would be great. Maybe a new volume knob with a killswitch button would work.
3) Current tone knob is pretty sloppy. I can't turn it on with the first try in 35% of all of the cases. So maybe a knob with a button on top would be better (the same thing goes for point 2)
4) The tone knob has too many(12) positions, so it's hard to switch quickly to the correct tone while playing. having about 6-8 knob positions looks like a better choice for a precise switching. but there should be a better application for the configuration where you can set the tone for a knob+switch from a preset library.
5) Helix Stadium has a wireless connection, so implementing wireless guitar tone switching seems to be a perfect choice for a new guitar. yep, there is a small delay, but it might work.

And maybe some knobs and switch repositioning...

Hi, one of my 3 JTV 59s I have been using for my job has what appears to be a broken 3 way switch.

As I said in the title the switch does change the magnetic pickups but not the variax models. The model selector knob does cycle b/t different guitars and the detune knob works as it should.

I know the guitars are discontinued and I dont see the switch for sale anywhere on line (that is in stock).

Does L6 still make (or have in inventory) this switch so if I send my guitar to a L6 partnered repair shop it can be replaced?

The board on my switch says "13 Jan 2011"
Im not sure if thats the old switch or the new one.

	Hello,

Back in the day, I had the cherry finish JTV59 with the included battery charger, RJ45 to USB I/O box, and the A/B box?

	Sold it all years ago.

Just when I wanted to revisit the Variax, I discover they're discontinued.

At this point, I would like to acquire a used JTV59 (with included or purchased battery charger) just for playing/recording the modeled sounds. In this case do I need to bother with the RJ45 to USB I/O box, and the Monkey app or whatever?

Would they're be a benefit to registering a used Variax to my Line 6 account?

Testing my newly acquired JTV59, the Model Selector knob would not light up when pressed down. The guitar was powered by the XPS-AB power supply with two green LED indicating power was being supplied.

After some web searching, I gently pulled the knob up, and then pressed down - it worked! Same with alternate tuning knob

It seems that I have to do this every time when powering on the JTV59. Not an immediate concern but at some point, with wear and tear, the knob's grip on the pot shaft might loosen.

Are there any solutions or recommendations to address this?

So I have a Shuriken and a JTV-59US and they are both nice guitars. I bought them for things like a 12 string part or sitar and for that they work nicely. The other models remind me of the original POD years ago. It was not quite a toy and you could really hear the potentiel in it. A few years later with the Helix, they got it nailed. I feel the same way about the Variax....they are so close. Just like with the POD, there was a sterility about it that just wasn't quite right and then they nailed it just a few years later. I really doubt that Line 6 is going to do anything more with this technology, but it is a shame as we all know it is possible. Like the POD years ago, serious musicians said "Yeah, well, not quite yet..." If they did a little bit of work on the Variax, I would be their biggest salesman ever. Now, people hear me and ask about it and I say that it does some things pretty OK but it is lacking, which is what I said about the early amp modelers.

C'mon Line 6....step up to the plate one more time and knock it out of the park. We know you can. There are a lot of Helixs' out there that were purchased because of my praises of it. I would love to do the same for the Variax.

The JTV 89 connects perfectly, but for the first time ever the JTV 69 won't. I have two sets of everything, and have tried everything, and reset everything, and reinstalled everything, and even removed the battery from the JTV 69 for hours in the hope that might prompt something. I've looked inside and all cables are connected. I've looked at the ethernet jack and it looks fine. The JTV 69 still plays fine, no issues. It just won't connect to Workbench.

I don't know what else to do. I've been trying to understand what happened with my JTV-69 guitar, when I bought it, I used to use just a 1/4 cable and it was just plug and play but now the guitar just gets mute when I activate the push botton, when I deactivate it the regular mics works fine, all of them are ok but I try to use the simulations of other guitars using the 1/4 cable, the guitar just get mute, I think is something ablout firmware because the 1/4 port is working right. Everything is update it, I have done everything I know so far, I rollbacked, I roll fowarded. I think it has to exist a way to reset this system like unplugging the cable and then push the botton or something. Somebody knows how to solve this?

After over 10 hours of installing and reinstalling I finally managed to get the USB Driver to install and run.

	Problem:

	Workbench installs fine

Line 6 Monkey installs and updates fine but reports no USB Driver

Windows Device Manager reports corrupted or incompatible driver when usb interface is plugged in

	The solution:

Click Start, Type Core, Select Core Isolation and run, turn off the Memory Integrity then reboot.

The driver then miraculously functions fine.

Line 6, please pin this somewhere as it was incredibly hard to find a solution and please see if the issue can be addressed.

I have a new-to-me JTV-59 that seems to have a nut intonnation problem.

If the open strings are perfectly tuned, each fretted note is slightly sharp (enough to sound off on open chords).

It seems that the nut is not positioned correctly. For the 24 9/16 scale length of the JTV-59 the distance from the nut to the first fret should be 35.022 mm yet mine is 36.1 mm. There is a small gap between the nut and the fretboard - but definately not 1mm worth. I am assuming this 1mm difference is causing my intonation problem.

Has anyone else had this problem and resolved it?

I can only think of two solutions:-

	1. add a shim to the leading edge of the nut to effectively bring it 1mm forward.

	2. replace the nut and remove a small amount of the fretboard so that the whole nut is moved forward.

If you have a Variax USB and don't need it anymore because you have the Helix or another unit that interfaces with the Variax, I would appreciate if you would be willing to donate it or sell it for a reasonable price.

So I've charged the battery and plugged in using the regular input jack. I have the VDI cable but nothing to use it on.

The battery shows a full charge, all four lights. Yet when I press in on either the modeling knob or the tuning knob, nothing happens. No light, etc. I can only use the magnetic pickups.

The jack is a bit problematic. It's a bit difficult to insert/take out the plug. I really hope it's not that.

	It's been suggested to:

"Use a guitar cable with TRS (tip, ring, sleeve) plugs and not a TS plug."

I've checked and my only cables are TS. TRS cables didn't occur to me. I hope the lack of a TRS cable is the only reason. I wonder if that's also the for the difficult jack?

I think there may be TS to TRS adapters, would that be sufficient? I suppose I'd need just one adapter to fit the jack, the other end of the cable not being relevant.

Or do I just need to order a new TRS cable?

WARNING FOR 2024 - Mac updates appear to brick JTV workbench and possibly affect the JTV itself.

Last night upgraded security patch to my Mac - (Monterey 12.7.2) and Workbench no longer recognises my JTV basically it appears bricked!

	Was fine before.

Managed to get workbench going on Big Sur 11.7.10 But this looks like a really big problem down the line - Be careful when upgrading and if you have any old Macs don't throw them away just use for the JTV - Can't be sure but until last night everything was fine . We need security patches & updates so don't compromise that but be aware this could be a huge issue if L6 don't support the software. Also Helix update may be implicated in this but can't tell yet as I tried connecting directly to Mac and it still thought I had an old JTV which is not the case.

Anyone else found issues last night with upgrades to Macs?

I owned Three Variaxes - the Original No Pickup Model (uses AA Bateries), a 59 (uses a Line6 camcorder Battery), and. JTV (Line6 Battery). I have about six of the Line6 batteries. I moved in 2020 and took me a while to unpack my studio, set everything up, and then go through the process of checking and updating all my gear (lots of guitars, Synths, amps, modelers). I finally got around to playing all my quirky guitars. First up, a Les Paul Robot Guitar - original one with the original Tronical Tuners. I dug up my Robot charger, hooked it up, and it seemed to charge the guitar. It did, but the next day, the guitar was dead. I then ordered replacement internal batteries and after numerous tries, it charged and works.

Next up, I checked the Variaxes. The JTV still had the battery in and showed three lights. Between 2020 and now, I periodically charged all the Line6 batteries. I tried all the other batteries in the JTV and no lights on all the batteries. I bought three new Line6 batteries (notmdelivered yet, but I was slightly pissed that they appeared to,be charged but the guitars showed they were dead. I watched a few Youtube videos on tricking the batteries and computer chip to have sufficient voltage. I then bought a volt meter and touched all the + and - poles which showed that all the batteries had the correct voltage.

I then updated Workbench HD but Workbench would not recognize the JTV using batteries. I then dug out the TSR Cable and PowerBox, and Workbench recognized the JTV, Central updated it, and I backed up all my patches. Now, the JTV works using batteries for playing purposes.

I did the same with the 59 - updated it and saved patches. While the JTV operates on batteries, the 59 will only work using the powerbox and cable. Does anyone know if there is a battery in the 59 that needs replacing (like a coin cpu board battery or the reason why the 59 will not recognize the batteries?

The original Variax still doesn't work after replacing the dead AAs. I'm going to see whether the powerbox works, but I have to dig out my old MBP2013 to use the 32 bit Workbench.

	Any advice would be appreciated.

Is there a way to make modifications through Workbench HD and save the setting on one of the switch settings?

Why?

	I've owned a Variax since 2002.

Since buying a Helix, I've considered upgrading to a Variax HD model, but am a bit worried none of the major retailers are selling them.

Does anyone know if new models are being worked on by Line6 or Yamaha?

I hope they have teams working on new Variax models.

Now magnetic pickups are standard on all of them, I also hope they design new magnetic pickups that capture each string's signal separately, instead of using piezos on the bridge.

I called the company, and they had no information on new Variax development (at least to comment on).

Have any of you seen press releases or other plans regarding Variax development in the last year or two?

	Hello!

Do any of you know the technical values of the digital AES audio signal of the Line6 Variax guitars? I play a JTV'89 FR.

How many KHz and how many bits does the AES signal of the Variax guitar have?

	Thank you very much!

I did post recently about a hack-fix for my slipping 5 position switch, and that is still working. But I wanted to ask now that the JTV Variax line is EOL, is there an available wiring diagram for the JTV-89? I did try to purchase the switch assembly but it was not available and I was hoping to get more information about that custom 5 position switch. I do love this guitar JTV-89F with my Helix Rack and Floor unit. It is a Lamborghini or Bugatti of guitars and sound, in my opinion at least. I am just crazy enough to want to buy 2 of the PowerCab 112 Plus units next.

Anyway... a switch or circuit diagram of the JTV-89(f), if not breaking any rules, would be amazing.

OK Guys,

Looked around in the UK and the cheapest Line 6 Variax Cabled Power Kit I could find was £99.

However Digital Village (DV247.com) do the A/B switch for £22.70,

Official Line 6 Power adapter 9v 2000mA on ebay.co.uk around £18,

TRS Cable £12.00,

XLR Cable £14.50.(optional if you want to go acoustic in PA)

Total: £67.20

Admit you have several packages to wait for but 1/3 off seems good to me.

Hope this helps others wanting to save battery use.

Regards
