Helix Hx unusual use - amp advice

Thanks for the info guys. Being an aged dyed in the wool stompbox man, this piece of kit is a whole new ball game, but I'll do some research to get my head around the suggestions you've given. Busking will be for the acoustics only, so battery life is not an issu in this case, I just want to get some decent sounds to please me (and maybe the neighbours!). Thanks again. I shall be back at some point to tell you how I got on.

    Workbench HD 2 pickup limit

I’m afraid not. I recall owners requesting this since Workbench was first released in 2005. I liken it to L6 receiving requests for a three amp stereo path in a POD built to run two amps at the most. You can try to move two pickup types around in Workbench until the sound is approximated but, alas, the Swiss Army knife philosophy of the Variax means it can’t replace the main guitar(s) of players such as us who utilize unconventional switching.

    HX Stomp

FWIW - I searched for wah in Helix. There were 1700 results. Searching for Looper turned up 1267 results. Not all of those are directly related to the Stomp, but I'm pretty sure that both the 1 button looper and the wahs are identical between platforms. Just sayin'......

    HX Stomp

I'm thinking that nobody talks about the wah because, well, it's a wah. It goes "wah wah wah". Some of the models are adjustable for frequency range. Not everybody likes all of them. Some of them sound great. Someone in a recent thread asked how to use an external expression pedal to both operate it and toggle it. @phil_m explained it. Not much more to say about it. Unless you have an actual question? I'm thinking that nobody talks about the looper because it does what it's supposed to do - it records, it overdubs, it loops. You might have to read the manual to get it to work. I never used it until I read your post. I read the manual. I recorded a loop. I overdubbed it. Started it. Stopped it. Erased it. 5 minutes to learn how to use it and test it. It works, as advertised. Did you have an actual question about it that wasn't answered by reading the manual and following the directions? Lots of people here more than happy to help out with actual questions........

    HX Stomp

I think you're thinking too narrow. The Stomp has the identical wha wha sounds as the Helix. The only difference is that the Helix has been around a lot longer, and so there are more videos about it. If you search for "wha wha" and "Helix" in youtube you get quite a few hits. Below is one of my fave demos. Now, I'm not much of a wha guy, but honestly, it always felt . . . IMO and to me . . . easy, so I'm not sure what the issues you're hitting are, but they should be in some of these videos: Define nonfunctional? It's useful for what it is . . . a very simple looper. I would never recommend a hard core looper fan intend to use the Helix or Stomp's looper as their primary source. It would be useful for people who only need small loops on occasion, or for practicing a bit at home. The biggest problem is it's a one button looper, and so for a lot of us (myself included) it's easy to mess up with one button. With some practice it gets okay, but I would recommend getting a small midi controller like the DMC micro if you plan on using the looper in a live setting. Plus, it's useful for numerous other scenarios too.

    HX Stomp

Hi, I'd like to know why on the HX Stomp, nobody talks or upload demos about the wha wha, I haven't been able to get a good wha sound. Also, about the looper which according to my experience is not functional at all. If somebody can help I'm thinking you guys in advance.
  10. I would like to please recommend the ability to save a preset's inactive effect's setting in the HX Edit software and the Helix hardware. I use the HX Stomp, but if implemented in HX Edit and other hardware, it would be useful for all Helix products. I have effect's units that save their settings for inactive effects for each block. This is useful with limited effect's blocks. You can for example, easily swap a Reverb that is active in a block with an inactive delay from the same block. The inactive delay could have saved settings that you previously adjusted. This makes it easy to swap an effect in the same block without having to adjust settings each time. Especially useful for the limit of 6 blocks on the HX Stomp, but useful regardless of how many blocks. Currently, if you swap out your active effect in a block with a new effect, the previous effect's setting reverts to default settings. If you make the previous effect active again in the block, you have to adjust all its setting again. Thanks Line 6! Really enjoying this latest generation of your products!

Helix Hx unusual use - amp advice

Why doesn't the HX supply enough signal to the AER... that doesn't seem right to me. There is no "amp sim" in the HX so the tone might not be exactly what you want (yet) but there should be plenty of signal. Check the global settings... make sure the inputs are set to "instrument". If they are set to line, your guitar will not have any signal. The outputs should work fine set to "instrument" but if you need more juice.... just set it to LINE and it will push the AER harder. NOW: Back to getting a decent electric tone out of the HX Effects into an Acoustic Amp. Download the free ALLURE IR SPEAKER PACK from Line 6 install the IR's on the HX Effects Insert an IR block near the end of the effect chain... experiment with different ones for different tones. That gives you speaker emulation... which is half the battle of getting good electric tones..... Now insert some common "amp style" controls on the HX Effects Gain block EQ Compressor Overdrives... Reverb etc... etc... Those are all optional just suggestions... use what you want to shape a tone. I've done this several times and it works fine. It's not as easy as an Amp Sim, but it is flexible and can sound very good.

    Helix MIDI preset changes V2.81

OK, so forget LIVE. I switched over to Reaper and recorded a series of Preset changes from the FCB and played them back to the Helix, no problem, presets changed as expected. Your problem is somewhere in your system configuration, Helix v2.81 works fine with recorded MIDI.

    Odd ground noise?

Yes it is strange and I realized the same thing right after my original post. But it's not impossible that his friend's place could have some of the same interference sources he has in his apartment like main electrical lines, breaker boxes, dimmers, or any of the myriad other things that can cause interference. And yes, when guitar volume is at zero on any of my guitars, there is never a noise problem. It's dead quiet. This noise is definitely not normal and like the OP mentioned, it changes frequency and volume depending on what I actually touch e.g. strings, screw heads, different parts of the Helix itself, etc. Even highlighting different blocks within a preset causes the noise to change in an obvious manner. Very strange indeed, and annoying!

    Helix MIDI preset changes V2.81

Using MIDIOX, I routed my FCB1010/UNO via USB through my laptop and back out to a Helix Floor. No problems encountered. Both devices are using MIDI Channel 1 MIDI THRU is OFF MIDI OVER USB is ON MIDI PC RECEIVE is set to USB MIDI PC SEND is set to USB I then routed it in Ableton Live. Again, no problem. I don't really know how to record the MIDI events from the FCB and play the back to the Helix, but I'm going to find out how just out of curiosity. Meantime, check your settings. EDIT: I left out MID PC SEND set to USB - required when recording midi FROM the Helix!

    Odd ground noise?

Yes, that is interesting. I wasn't really paying much attention to active vs. passive pickups in the guitars I was using while troubleshooting but I definitely tested guitars with both passive and active pickups, and didn't notice an obvious difference. But that's something I'll pay close attention to next time it happens. Thanks for the useful tidbit!

POD HD Pro X: How to Build a Patch From Scratch?

Thanks pianoguyy (as in "sing us a song, you're the...?"). I'll be going from POD to the studio's Mac (Logic). No external effects. I'd like to use what's on the POD. I had a habit when I was younger in getting overwhelmed with features ("Oooo.....how can I write a song with a Octaver?"). A single instrument at a time (guitar). I'm guessing, having now downloaded the EDIT program (without having launched it yet), that this is really what I should be manipulating. I want to avoid even 'touching' factory presets, and organically build a rig. Yes, I want to drop in my typical effects. But, I do also want to explore effects I've never used before. Also, how exactly do you define 'global settings'? Do you mean in the Advanced Manual where they talk about 'System Setup'?

    Wrong FS during a song

Yes and no...L6 didn't do you any "favors" per se, but they have provided you with options. The behavior of those up/down footswitches is selectable, depending on what footswitch layout you want and what mode you prefer (preset, snapshot, stomp/snap, preset/snap, all snapshots, etc etc). so it all depends on how you have things configured. The arrow switches are assignable to either "bank" or "preset". When set to "preset", those arrow switches will instantly change to one preset higher or lower... if you had been in that mode, you would probably have screwed yourself up even worse selecting the wrong patch. But when set to "bank", the next set of 4 patches become selectable, which you'd then have to access via another footswitch. The various options are in global settings under "footswitches". But regardless of how you have things set up, hitting the wrong footswitch will usually foul things up to some degree. We've all done it. Whether or not the moment is salvageable though, will depend largely on two things: 1) How well you know your gear, and 2) How easily you get rattled. If you have a good grasp of #1, then #2 becomes less likely.

Helix Hx unusual use - amp advice

It depends what kind of sound you're going for. A Strat into an acoustic amp won't sound like a Triple Rec, but it's 60 watts, that's plenty of power, and it has an FX Loop, Yes? Make sure the Output Level Setting in Global Settings matches the AER Input level - Inst or Line. Connect the HXFX in 4cm* and stack some OD/Distortions in front of the FX Loop Block. For Clean sounds and shaping the Distorted sounds there's all sorts of compressors and EQs. For busking you might need a pretty potent battery. Maybe someone else will chime in with what works? If not, try the Digital and Modeling forum over on The Gear Page. *4cm - 4 cable method: Guitar to HXFX In - OD/Dist/Comp/EQ Blocks - HXFX Send/Return Block - HX FX Send - Amp In - Amp FX Send - HXFX Return - Delay/Reverb/Comp/EQ Blocks - HX Out - Amp FX Return

    Helix MIDI preset changes V2.81

This post is for those who use a PC to trigger MIDI events in Helix. Since I updated to the 2.8 firmware, my USB connectivity for MIDI is not working. I’ve checked all of my settings, reinstalled the ASIO audio driver and validated my USB connection to the PC as I’m able to control Helix perfectly through HX Edit app. I also validated the issue by reverting back to 2.71 and testing and everything worked fine. I also copied all of the global settings so I could reset them all in 2.8. Well, the issue is back and I don’t know what to try next. Any known issues or ideas you can share with us? I really need to resolve this before my upcoming live performances, thanks!

Hi, and thanks for replying. I was successful in doing this. I changed mixer settings options, and the panning, left and right.

Powercab Plus Combo Jack Input - 2 guitar?

If you run Powercab in FRFR mode, you can easily amplify two different inputs. Guitar inputs will need amp and speaker models, so as long as you do that you should have no problem. Powercab is intended to be run clean, the distortion comes from the amp models, not Powercab. Run this way, the Powercab should be completely linear and will easily amplify whatever signals you put into it. It will be mono, but everything will come through, just in the same pan position.

    Wrong FS during a song

...but maybe okay- I posted on the Helix family FB page a video where I accidentally hit FS7 (bank down) just before a solo which caused me to get distracted & blow the solo. However, listening back to it I've realized that Line6 has done us all a huge favor- until you actually press a new preset it doesn't change tones. So if I'm right, I would've been okay just continuing with the song until I had a pause. Agree?

    Odd ground noise?

It all makes sence. But it is strange, that he has the same thing at his friends place and no problems with other equipment. But when you set the volume on guitar to zero, there should be no noise I think (...I can put my guitar next to other electrical equipment without noise, when volume is at zero)
