    Helix Firmware Upgrade 2.8 - Blues :(

I set it up for emails about the end of the first year of Helix ownership. And yet, I still look - don't look - that's was the other voice in my head!

    line 6 touch issue

It is a fault - my Stomp had the same issue on the left most button only. I sent in in for repair under warranty and it was fixed and hasn't happened again.

That's a good feature, AX8 has a scene 1/2 toggle, similar Idea that I used a lot. Hope to see it on the HX stomp, there's no command center on the stomp though...

    Helix Cabs_Mics

I get that, but I believe they still have to start with an IR to determine how the original cab responds to sound travelling through it. Anyway, check out this original post from the designer of the Helix (Digital Igloo). It gives SOME insight into how the cabs work:

I'm awaiting the ability to set buttons to 'Toggle' in the Command Centre. I'm creating my live set for June this year and I was really hoping I wouldn't have to do the faffy workaround yet again. Oh well. Better late than bodged.

    Helix Cabs_Mics

Let me see....LOTS of people claim that the Helix cabs sound like poop, and you can't get a decent sound out of Helix without IRs, which are essentially screenshots, static representations of a specific sound captured at a point in time. Lots of people think that the above is poop, that the Helix cabs sound just fine. As always, the truth is "Rock what sounds best to YOU!" If neither IRs nor Helix cabs (however they're created) float your boat, and you've got the cash to spare, go with the new UA "models". PLEASE DO report back with your experience (with comparative sound clips). Inquiring minds (with small budgets) want to know.....

When setting up the volume block I change the default sweep setting. I find you can be more accurate with the volume level.

A model is a theoretical "true" representation of the actual part. It would react in theory dynamically. An IR is not a model. It is a sample at a given point and does not react dynamically. It may work great throughout the range of settings but is still a static representation.

I . . . I am genuinely not sure what you are saying the difference is. At the most basic they are clearly NOT just IRs because you can manipulate them in ways that you can't do with one IR alone. However, I am confidant they still began with impulse responses to determine just how those cabs and mics behaved.

    Helix Cabs_Mics

So I was looking through the forum to see if this has already been confirmed. Could not see anything, but there are a lot of pages so.... 1.) Are the Cabs and (mics) models of the actual real world counterparts or simple "screenshots" (IR's) ? With UA coming out with modeled speakers and mics I was curious if we already had this in the Helix. I have been playing with IR's for a while and lately comparing IR's in the HX Effects with an amp from a load box against 2 cabinets in the Helix using different mics. Would like to know if anyone can confirm this or not.

    Helix Firmware Upgrade 2.8 - Blues :(

I get it. I’m eager to see the release, too, but it’s all self-inflicted. If I didn’t want to waste time and risk disappointment, I’d check back the first day of Summer for a product that they’ve said from the start is coming in Spring.

    Powercab considerations and thoughts

Hello, As many others I bought a Helix (couple of months ago) with mainly two purposes: - to use as an all-in-one-unit for practising at home. Unfortunately I need to use headphones as there's no space to practice/possibility with my studio monitors (which are basically collecting dust at the moment) - to use at gigs using the presets I made (with headphones ;-)) and going direct into the mixer via XLR Fyi, this is purely a hobby with the occasional gig, just for fun. I had my first " Helix-direct-gig" couple of weeks ago and the sound guy sent a mix to the floor monitors (the mix also having the other instruments and vocals). It sounded bad (extremely harsh) and more importantly I was having a lot of difficulty hearing what I was playing. The FOH was quite good soundwise, so it was not really a preset issue but rather a monitor issue. Also, I assumed I would have a dedicated monitor with only guitar, but will never make that assumption again ... why the sound was so harsh is still a mystery to me. Anyway, now I'm looking at an FRFR or other solution that still gives me sufficient stage volume and reasonable sound. Plenty of options ...... " FX-only" presets I have tried; It works, but requires me to bring a seperate amp that in turn needs to be mic-ed. Or, I would nee to create patches with seperate outs on XLR and line. All possible, but complexity is what I want to avoid. In a hunt for a cheap solution I bought myself a Behringer 207MP3 monitor unit, but I will probably return that very soon; It works, gives me sufficient volume and my own "monitor mix" , but quality wise just not what I hoped for. And so I'm now saving up for more dedicated tools like the Line 6 Powercab. Here's where I get lost a bit, because the Powercab seems to be much more than an FRFR cabinet. Actually I see lots of people saying that this product really starts to shine once you use the built in cabinet/ speaker models. This is where I get confused, because to me that means that the purpose of the Helix gets lost as I would have a setup with an amplifier in one device (the Helix) and the cab model in another (the powercab). Essentially it would link the Powercab and the Helix which for my purpose would again create more complexity than needed. Also I wonder why there would be a difference in sound between a cabinet modeled in the Helix and a cabinet modeled in the Powercab. Doesn't make too much sense to me yet ... aren't these the exact same models? I haven't made up my mind yet and I do find the Powercab appealing (visually, technically), but for my purpose a cheaper FRFR solution may work better (e.g. Headrush, Alto). No worries, I won't ask for advice here, plenty of threads about that :-) But I do wonder if anyone figured out this alleged difference in cab model issue. Any other comments welcome of course, I may be overlooking something. Again I'm looking for simple flexibility (which was the main reason for buying the Helix). Thanks so much !!

    Ernie Ball

Volume pedals that work as EXP with HX products only need a simple guitar cable TS->TS, from the EXP jack on the HX product to the OUTPUT jack on the pedal. NO TRS or SEND/RETURN or special cable needed.

    Ernie Ball

Many thanks for the prompt answer. Do I need to connect the ernie ball using a simple TS cable from the OUT of EB or should I use a "Y" cable mono TS+TS (IN and OUT of the EB) and a stereo TRS into the Helix LT EXP 2? Is there any hint to have these changes to affect ALL the patches or should apply them manually? :)

HX Stomp as audio interface- setting?

Thanks for the replies guys... Kilrahi, no worries bro.. :) To re-cap, as I mentioned in my original post what I would actually like to find out is- Can I send effected guitar from HX stomp without the hardware monitoring- i.e. only hearing the guitar (plus backing tracks) from my DAW software monitoring. Why would I want to do this when zero latency hardware monitoring on input is available? ...so I can use additional processing on the guitar signal using some nice cabs+ plugins that are in my computer. ( I have a low latency setup and have always recorded my analog pedal board this way without any problems.) I just thought it would be sweet if I could use HXS as an all in one solution, but if not- I can get the same effect by plugging it into my MOTU interface as I have always done. Cheers, D
