  1. Well as far as the chain goes. Fender American Vintage 56 strat. Amp is a Deluxe Reverb. My pedal chain is: Polytune 3- TS808 - BB Preamp - J Rockett Archer - TC Electronic Flashback delay! You have a strat, the Helix has a Deluxe Reverb, the Polytune is just a tuner. It also acts as a buffer but you don't need that. The Helix has an 808, the BB Preamp is an Xotic pedal and the Helix's Kinky boost is an Xotic EP Booster, the JJ Rocket claims to be built on the "Centaur" circuit and the Helix has a Klon Centaur model called Minotaur, he says he uses that as a clean/warmth boost so keep the gain low and adjust the output so that it's the same level as when it's not on when you're clean. Adjust the tone to get to "warm". the Flashback emulates many different delays so I'm sure the Helix has you covered there. So I dont' know how close the two pedals Helix has are to the BB Preamp and the JJ Rocket but one of the things I love about the Helix is when I can emulate exactly the chain a particular artist uses in the Helix, it's usually gotten me in the ballpark. Even if those pedals don't come close I would then just start to wander through all the other distortions in the Helix. On other thing to mess around with with your Strat is the input impedance. See how that affects things. The Variax does this automatically so there's no way to do that with the Variax. That's all the advice I have. Good Luck!

  2. If the pedal has a buffer you can't get around that, run guitar into helix and run the pedal in the loop

  3. Yo I can't get over this HX stomp, with a arbitrator fuzz 1st in the chain, with input set on auto it's fuzzy and spitty like it's supposed to be. If you put it on 1M, you can hear it get a lot more high end through, but because it's a fuzz it stops fuzzing the same, just like a fuzz does if it has a buffer before it, I swear there's a switchable buffer in there, where auto knows to turn it off and 1M keeps it on. I haven't been this thoroughly satisfied with piece of gear since the OP-1, cheers to the L6 team, this little thing is so much fun

  4. Note: I deleted my posts last night because I was critiquing the player and not answering your questions, and since I knew many here could answer them far better than me. That said, Soundogs post reminded me of one thing I noted that I believe is relevant. Try the Variax non-VDI. Or the Strat. The Variax does great on a lot of stuff but via VDI it was not working out for me on anything with finesse/nuance. It does fine via 1/4", no battery, as a regular old guitar. Relative to the songs you posted, I would likely be frustrated doing the shuffle on the processed Variax, but it would probably do fine on the Ray Charles tune as it has more things to mask it's imperfections.

  5. I think you may be trying to fit the Helix into an area it's not designed for. That's not saying there aren't people that use the Helix for simple mixing particularly on solo acts. But the Helix main job is something else and it can never hope to compete with the ease of even a simple mixer given that adjusting the mix on a Helix involves making adjustments to the preset as compared to having real faders to dial in a mix.

  6. Modding the M-Audio EXP pedal is super easy. I modified the M-Audio EXP pedal by desoldering the white cable (ring) and connecting it to ground. Where the white cable was before, I used a piece of wire to connect it with the red cable. So that the result looks a bit more like this (leaving out the minimum depth resistor potentiometer in the schematic): +-------------------> TIP (red) | | | | +-+ | | 10k | |<----1kR--+ | | | +-+ | (white) | | +-----------+ | | | | v GND Works like a charm.

  7. No, you can’t do that. Where did you read this? It’s not stated in this thread. You can add IRs (Impulse Responses) but they are not amps.

  8. Helix is wonderful. Customtone is not. When the only common denominator is the patch, and absolutely everything else is different and/or a complete unknown...the player/playing style, guitar, pickups, the monitoring method used, the acoustic environment, and most importantly the volume at which the patch was dialed in...any hope of continuity from one guy to the next is a pipe dream. If you want proof, download anything you want from Customtone, and see how closely the description fits what you're hearing. It might have sounded glorious to the guy who created it... with his rig, under the unique conditions outlined above. But the odds of it working for you without significant editing is almost zero... and if you do happen to stumble upon one that's perfect as is, it's just dumb luck. What's the moral? Create your own sounds. You'll get to where you need to be faster and with lot less grief, and without wasting hours searching, downloading, and auditioning dozens of patches to finally hit the one that you'd find useful.

  9. Hi, You must already know this, but just in case... If you know the amp, you can just check the helix equivalent, for example I found this regarding Jerry Garcia... “As far as amps and effects go, Jerry kept it relatively simple, using a silverface Fender Twin for much of the 1970s and a Mesa Boogie Mark IIa later on. His mainstay effects included a Mu-Tron III (his original sold on Reverb in May 2015), a Mu-Tron Octave Divider, a Vox (sometimes Colorsound) wah, and an MXR Analog Delay. “ Here’s a list of Helix quitar amps: https://dshowmusic.com/line-6-helix-amp-models/ Turns out Fender Twin is not on the list... neither is the Mesa markII... so I’d search for “amps similar to...” Tried to be helpful, failed miserably... :{

  10. That's a strange preset. Why not just control the split to the amps with a switch but use a volume block instead? See attachement. PRS Archon Mod.hlx

  11. Nothing has to stay in the box, in the house forever - that’s why they created EBay. ;-)

  12. Thanks! Yeah, i see it's pretty cheap, in this case it was not the money that concerned me, but it was just to be sure not to buy something that will have to stay in the box somewhere in my house forever :D Thank you for your help!

  14. Hi, Well as it over a year since the OP asked about M- Audio EXP pedals, and he hasn't been back to complain. I would guess he is happy with the gizmo as we have heard nothing to say different. As noted in my previous post above I use 2 of these with my Helix Floor unit - no problems - along with many others who use these pedals . Follow the advice about the switch underneath and the mini volume knob and you should be fine. I don't know why you are worrying because they are so cheap there is almost nothing to lose. Now if you bought a Mission pedal that's a lot of money for something to do the same job. Strange, I just noticed that I am wearing the M-Audio t-shirt again, so that was good value too. Have fun - stay safe.

  15. Chances are your boomy bottom end is coming from the Altos either because you have them placed on the floor as floor monitors and are getting bass coupling, and/or you have the contour button engaged which is further boosting the bottom end. What you have to remember is that Alto's primary market is the recorded music disco/karaoke crowd. You can somewhat fix this situation by making sure you don't have the contour button on and placing them vertically on stands. This is also why it's not always wise to let low price be the driving factor in your buying decision on speakers...especially with a premium modeler.

  16. Thanks for responding in the forum, DI. Here are some of the features I'd like to see on the HX Switcher: Dedicated stereo/dual mono inputs. Stereo output. The ability to gang mono sends and returns for stereo use. Volume pedal loop. More than one programmable expression pedal input. 3 buffers: input/movable/output Ability to enabled/disabled buffers. Input impedance: 2.2 MΩ; / output impedance: 100Ω. Ability to Isolate output. Phase reversal capability for each loop. MIDI in / out. Command Center Programming via HX Edit. A color screen only slightly larger than the HX Stomp with same UI Digital scribble strips if they didn't contribute too much to the overall size. A form factor no wider than two HX Stomps side by side, a bit smaller top to bottom, and same height: 14" x 4" x 2". Or, just use the HX Effects enclosure for economies of scale. The HX Effects enclosure would provide the aforementioned scribble strips but the display of the Stomp is a bit nicer. Because Line 6 has been around so long and has become so ubiquitous I sometimes forget it's a relatively small company here in LA County and resources are indeed limited compared to global juggernauts like Roland. I still think that if Line 6 put out an HX Switcher, at a competitive price point, the market would suddenly get a bit bigger and be led by Line 6. Thanks again, DI, for taking a moment to respond as you did. Stay healthy. Stay safe.

  18. I was intrigued by this amp but had fairly moderate expectations of its modelling and ability. I recently sold my Zoom multi-effects as I've developed an aversion to little screens and menus. Must be eyesight as get older :D I intended getting the Boss ME80 as most settings are refreshingly written and directly switched to, but a bit overkill for hobbyist bedroom playing. I took the App into PMT which they appreciated as they hadn't got round to setting anything up yet, and I had pre-DL Gary Moore and Hendrix tones as I didn't have much else stored on my phone. (Have now realised you don't need tracks to get tones! I and the salesman had wide grins as we realised how simple and effective the tone matching was. I had had no intention to buy now, just really wanted to discount Amplifi, but ended up walking away with the stocked Fi75. How good the tones are ultimately, I'm not sure, more important to me, is they sound better than most of the ones I spent ages trying to forge myself on 3 pedals and my multi-effects unit. Nice and simple, and song playback is a big plus compared with using a guitar amp lacking high frequencies. I also like to plug into Rocksmith on Xbox and play along, sound here is very good but is a 'Mono' sound unless headphones were plugged in .... or head was up against cab! I love my Variax JTV59 , but all of a sudden, it is so much more meaningful trying different guitars and settings to match the Amplifi's backing, merging into the track. Overall so far, well pleased. Few queries for those who have had it longer: When a tone is downloaded, is it best to have all amp dials at 12 o'clock? On some effects these alter things dramatically, and if say Drive was set at lowest setting before DL, you could only adjust upwards, or if it gets left full on, you could only adjust downwards. What I mean is, is downloaded tone meant to play correctly with Drive, FX, Reverb, Bass etc all set to 12 o'clock? Also, how do you know what effect the FX knob alters (sometimes it works, other times it doesn't do anything) I have saved DLs to My Tones. Cant find a use for Favourites or how to use it?
