  1. And a little reading during Helix induced insomnia has answered a few questions. As far as adding two amps it looks like they some how split the DSP between the two paths, so it seems the way I am switching amps right now is the only way. Not a big deal at all but I am surprised at how quickly the DSP gets eaten up in this thing. As I was typing that I wonder if the rack unit has a stonger chip in it. Will research that while in return period. Again thanks for the help and as I discover tricks of my own I'll be sure to pop on and contribute. I must say... Looking at my studio with all the different computers hooked into the pedal and digital PA system... I think I had this wet dream when I was a teenager.
  2. Again thanks... This may turn into my random question thread. So what are you doing to switch between a dirty and clean amp in a chain? I have seen a few posts about a way to get an ABY type switch but havent yet seen how to do this when browsing through Helix Edit on my pc. The other thing I have noticed is that when I create a second chain on Path A most of the amps are red, or greyed out. What I have done is put one amp at the end of Path A and routed that to Path B. Then in Path B I am able to use any amp. So I toss the second amp at the beginning of Path B and use two Uber V30 cabs after that. I set both amps to the same toggle so I can switch back and forth. Both amps use the cabs that are following the amp in Path B. I found when I set cabs up with both amps and toggled between the amps and cabs there was a nasty click through my PA. So I just have both on the same cabs. Any other ways of doing this? In the mean time I have finally started building patches for the set list and will test them out with the group next Wednesday. Also, and I havent had the chance to do any reading yet, I still haven't been able to find any output options regarding monitor/mains for the output. I know I have a bit of learning to do still. For example I used to run my students into the aux input on my HD500. I tried that on the Helix and they are extremely quiet. I tried setting up two different paths and setting Path A to guitar and Path B to aux input and still have the same volume discrepancy. I am sure I'll figure this all out with a little reading so no push for responses; just thought I would bring it up. Most everything I have seen is about using the Helix's screen, but I am a heavy user of the PC editors. Ruptured discs in my neck and back cause my left arm to go numb when I play sitting down, let alone bending over all day to edit the pedal. ; )
  3. Roscoe where have you been all my life? The only thing I did was pop up a quick Brit 2204 patch I was trying to work with yesterday, shut off all the EQs, IRs, effects, popped in a couple Uber cabs with those mics and set Low Cut to 70 and high to 7500... That did the trick. I am going to try out a few more amps with this and may just build those cab choices into a template. While we're at it and with those results: Any suggestions for cleans? Going to futz some more but I noticed immediate improvement, thank you.
  4. I looked through the settings and apparently I need to do some more looking. Really the only thing I did was comfirm that the xlr out was set to Line and not Amp. I didnt see any setting for monitor or mains, but will do some searching... That was the only relevant global change I saw. My mains are on posts. My setup is xlr left and right to two channels linked together on my RM32ai. I did futz around with the EQs in those ranges a bit to see what I could get. Even doubling up on EQs to cover what I could. As well as the cuts. I am trying my best to not use any EQ settings on the mixer; incase we come to a show where we are not using our PA. Though if push comes to shove, because ebery PA sounds different, I could grab a wedge and toss a mic on it. It does definitely get a bit boomy some times and then a little crisp and thin depending on the boost I toss in front. Its almost a boomy sound thats washed out but still not boomy where I want it to be... Hard to explain. When I play am open chord and then just hit the bridge with my palm and no pick I can get a real nice oomph bottom end with my previous setup... This sounds boomy and bassy in a washed out fashion but no good oomph to the palm mutes like that. So I pull the frequencies to prevent the wash out... But at that point its just all around thin. I had my setup EQd to a nice thick warm sound that didnt get washed in the mix as I would pull back on the 80Hz but push the 220 Hz by about 4db with a parametric EQ on the hd500. My distortion setup for the most part on the HD500 + dt50 was: -treadplate around 60% gain and the EQs around 12 o'clock with the mid a bit higher and the bass and treble backed a bit. -blackback cab (i think... Simular to the uner) -screamer in front with the drive to zero and the level to 100 I would only use a studio EQ for solo boost rather than a compressor to try and retain dynamics the compressor could squash And a ping pong and digital delay with the feedback, time, and mix set low; I did this instead of using reverb to prevent getting lost in the mix. Outside of that most of my patch changes where because of adding various effects like chorus, wah, phase, flange, octave. I tried to use as little modelling as possible because... Well you have ever been a sound man you know why. There is a guy on youtube that has a shirt that says it all "Having 40 patches doesn't make you a good guitar player. It makes you an lollipop!" ; ) I am suffering from ear fatique and will tey a bit more tomorrow. I k ow many will say that if I only use these for a few sounds then why not just get an amp instead of a modeller/effect pedal. To me these are more about the ability to route several effect changes to one button and/or use the expression pedal to change the parameters on sever different units at thw same time. I want to play my guitar... Not tap dance. My tones I need to dial are basically: 1. A couple cleans 2. Crunchy dirty sultry sexy clean 3. Medium gain 4. High gain Once I find that one tone that fills each category thats what I save, back up, and use across all patches.
  5. Yeah thats what I am coming from... My biggest worry is that to me sound quality comes first. If I don't need to lug around my DT50s that would be incredible! But I need to get the sound quality out of this that I was getting from my amps. I always started a show with comments of, "oh I see... You're using a multi effect processor and a line 6 amp..." And ended a first set with comments, "holy hell that was amazing!" I don't want to end the set with the same comment as the beginning of the set. ; ) I am going to keep at it and see what I can get. I just want to get that open sound out of it.... Of course I spent years dialing in that DT50 and HD500x. But I dont have years to see if this will pull the same thing before my return policy runs up. Tried some of the IRs and they helped a little. I found I just used the amp model without a cab when using the IR. Running both together sounded awful... Still learning IRs.
  6. Oye doing some looking around and it seems there is a bit to learn about IR's. I see a lot started with reverb but that isn't the only thing. Looking at the God's cab IR I just downloaded and a lot of different options there but nothing intuitively described as a guitar cab, most titles look like reverb. I would like to try a few free IR's before I jump in and start buying any (You have no idea how much I spent over the past few weeks on guitar and live sound gear!)
  7. Hey guys thank you very much for the quick replies. I will try out both. I am very new to IR's.... Are these to be placed after the amp model or before in the signal chain?
  8. I'll add: Since the DT50s are going to be repaired I could always just go back to that, but my main reason for trying out the helix is: the option of not needing to lug my amp around and just run into my PA i an extremely attractive idea.
  9. Hello, Coming from a DT50 catastrophe... News on that is Line 6 offered to fix all 3. In the meantime I am test running a helix. I am running direct into my PA system with PRX715s. I have been running through amp models, presets, downloads, tone settings I can find online, different mic options, filters, post/pre EQ... I can't seem to find a distortion/gain/overdrive that doesn't sound like I am playing inside of a box. Is this because of the mains? Is it because I am not using tubes? I just cant seem to be able to get the sound quality I have with the DT50s and my hd500x? Any tips? Outside of the twenty thousand or so I have been reading?
  10. thank you for the video, that actually helped quite a bit... Hate to admit it but for the upcoming show here I am just going to plug this pod into the front of the amp and call it a day... necessary at this point.
  11. Okay. - First I am in a rush so I have dual posted this on the boogie boards as well... So I had an amp blow a cap on me and needed an emergency replacement, thought I would try out the Mesa Boogie Road King Series 1. I am trying to hook up my HD500x to it using the 4 cable method and having no good luck with it... just killing the amps tone.... I thought about running the HD500 in only the effect loop but I really want to pop something in front to tighten the amp up. It sounds like it has great potential but just not really impressed so far. Coming from a Line 6 DT50 and I thought this Mesa would run circles around it. (I have two DT50's, one has blown two power transformers and the other blew a cap... I need reliability being that this is how I make my living and have pretty much had it with this amp line, so not really discussing that option... I will fix these two and pop them up on craigslist.) I have already read a few other guides on it, gone through setting, doing what I can... The problem is I am in a bit of a rush. This is what I do and I need to be running ASAP, so in hopes of finding a quick hand with it or a pointer to someone that is running this amp and this pedal that would be great!! Looking for all the setup settings on the amps loop and in the pod's settings. It has two effect loops, series and parallel, not sure which to use.... All of that jazz... I do not plan on using the HD500's models, only effects such as a screamer, fuzz, wah, octave in front, post EQ, chorus, delay in back. Any help would be greatly appreciated... As I said sorry if this has been covered and please point me that way if this specific amp and pedal have already been discussed to resolution, just happen to be in one heck of a hurry. Thank you
  12. Hello, Did a little searching around, perhaps not using the correct search terms so if this has been covered (most likely) and you know where please point me in the right direction: I have HD500x and two DT50 112's. What I want, switch between a distorted amp and a clean amp in the same patch.... What I am doing now (from a forum I read some time ago about this topic which I can't seem to find again): I put a volume pedal in front of each amp turned all the way down and toggle them on or off (both set to the same switch) for my clean and distorted amp. For the most part I have most of my patches set up to send the clean and dirtry through both amps (sorta mono, but I do do some stereo stuff). I was wondering if there was a way to do this in the same patch with out needing the two volume pedals and keep both DT50's on channel A? Basically I want to just shut off the amp in the patch with out the DT50 switching to channel B where I lose all control of that amp.
  13. Okay, I know its been a bit but an update and concern now. So I had the DT50 112 already and bought the DT50 212 and had volume issues. Ultimately the 212 was a pain so I returned it and got a 112. So now I have two DT50 112's. Still had a huge volume difference. My older DT50 112 is quieter (significantly) than both the used 212 and 112 that I bought.... So I just leave one cranked and the other around 2.5-3. It doesn't matter what order the amps are place in, its always quieter. So we though bias and tubes perhaps. Well I noticed some rattle the other day in one of the tubes of the older amp and decided it was time for new power tubes. I bought a matched quad and retubed and biased both amps. Bias around 36mA +/- 0.5 (that pot is REALLY hard to get 36 spot on) I decided to try out the Eurotube E34L JJ's (they're alright, don't really notice a big difference) After new matched power tubes in both amps and the bias as close as possible the volume difference is still huge. I also notice the lights seem much dimmer on the quieter amp? hmmmm.... could be a symptom or different bulbs but thought it was worth mentioning. Any ideas? I did check fuses as well to make sure they match.
  14. The only reason that I wouldn't be using the V30 is just a consistency thing. The DT50 112 came with a stock G12H-90s and the 212 came with the same plus the V30. So at this point I have 3 speakers. I would only be micing two of them run in stereo and would like consistency across left and right PA speakers. The only reason I would ever run more than one speaker is for stereo purposes any ways. We want the audience to hear what coming from the PA system and keep the stage noise to a minimum when ever possible, and we have a fairly large PA that can handle just about anything we throw at it; we don't crank it but it doesn't need to work very hard and results in a very clean mix. You probably know from experience it makes things sound much tighter and neater if you can keep stage noise clean. Heck the only reason we don't run direct from the HD500 is because well: Tube tone mic'd vs direct from pedal.... Tube tone wins every time. Now if we could have some tube power amps in our PA system :P
  15. I have to say that you have truly inspired me. I have 3 of these DT50s: A head unit (needs the infamous power transformer repair and then being sold) a 112 and a 212. I grabbed the 112 and 212 because I found them pretty cheap @ 650 and 750 and I didn't need to worry about buying cabs. I have a really crappy fender 4x12 that is going with the dt50 head. I think I am going to build a case for the heads in these amps and a cabinet for the speakers... I'll probably keep only the g12h-90s and store or ditch the vintage 30. (I only plan to mic two speakers so no sense in having 3). Probably put each of the g12h-90s in their own cabs and maybe possibly one case to house both chassis... or two... not sure. But thank you very much!! Any thoughts on this? I will be asking a friend who did a really nice job building his PA speakers (I mean they are REALLY sharp!) Any thoughts on cabinet? Closed, ported, open, etc.... both in one, each in their own (I'll be running some patches stereo) Really thank you, I have no idea why this never dawned on me!
  16. Hello, I have had a DT50 112 for some time (I also have the DT50 Head but this is being sold once repaired) which I bought when my head blew up (for the second time!!) and I just picked up a DT50 212 because it was cheaper than any DT50 112 I could find. Really I bought this because I have reoccurring nightmares of my DT50 blowing in the middle of a show, especially after my experience with the head. However I just love the modeling and tone I can get from this thing so until another company produces this type of integration I will need to rely on multiple unreliable amps (lol... I do truly love the DT50 just not their power transformers). to the point: I decided that since I have two working DT50's I may as well goof around with daisy chaining them and have found the amp B (the 212) to be considerably louder than amp A (the 112) ..... so I thought DUH! the 212 is ... well a 212 16 ohm setup. So logically I disconnected the Vintage 30 and ran the single speaker to the 8 ohm output. Well.... that didn't solve the problem, amp B is still considerably louder. I am using a dB meter. this is the case when adjusting amp model volumes, mixer volumes, left, right.... you name it I have played with it. the only way I can level them is the Master volume on the amp it self. and it is extreme. I have amp A @ 11 :P and amp B @ 2.5 Any thoughts?
  17. Okay, so I have done a ton of reading both on and off the line 6 forum and I am ready to make a purchase but I thought I would post here to see if anyone has any experience with this. This is for the Line 6 HD500 L6 linked to the DT50 So, I use a Volume Pedal at the end of the signal chain in every patch possible. This is because equalizing volumes across all patches perfectly is well... a son of a female dog... and variables such as venue size, crowd, how hard the drummer feels like hitting his kit, how everything is mixed never seems to be a constant. I like to have significant control over the volume of all patches. I leave this pedal set @ a minimum of 50% and maximum of 100% and I find that this gives me more than enough room to make needed adjustments. My problem is on songs where I need the expression pedal to control other variables. For example with the song "Paralyzer" by Finger Eleven I have it set up to reduce gain on the amp, increase delay mix, reduce presence etc... so I can move between the heavy part and the softer part with out needing to have multiple patches... or any patch that has a wah pedal renders using it as a volume pedal useless... other wise my wah pedal would ALWAYS be at max volume OR would adjust volume as I use the wah if I were to set the wah on/off w/ a switch. All in all I need to add another volume pedal to the mix and here are my considerations: The line 6 EX1 seems to be utter crap by everything I have read... and for what I need it for I wouldn't even be concerned with build quality, but others reporting that it doesn't get full range sweep is the kicker... I don't need/want a massive jump in volume when I make a small movement with my foot toward the top end. Mission ep1 l6 was also an option but I also read a post that point out problems when switching patches using an extension pedalEven the slightest hint of a hiccup will turn me away... In a Live setting if I have a problem then I need a new rig that will allow me to run flawlessly uninterrupted. (this is the reason I have two DT50's and two HD500's just in-case) The Boss FV-500 I read that this can be used as an extension pedal... but being that it is also a volume pedal I could just insert an effects loop at the end of the signal chain. How would you even hook this up to work as an extension pedal as I have read? Should I do this by using an extension pedal either using the Mission or the boss pedal? Should I use a standard volume pedal and insert an effects loop at the end of the signal chain to imitate what I am currently doing with the build in expression pedal If I go this route should I get a passive or active volume pedal Should it be a high impedance or low impedance volume pedal If you reply with a suggestion would you please be able to explain and justify your suggestion. Sorry about the long post I just like to make sure I am as detailed as possible.
  18. Does the eleven rack have the kind of functionality and tone that the hd500 does when connected to the DT50?... I have yet to find a set up that tops this. I just played a show with this set up and the compliments about the accuracy of the tones poured in... this is a set up I will be using for years to come, unless someone can top this type of modelling and communication with the amp...
  19. Hello Jeff, I uploaded the tone to custom tone. Here's the link: http://line6.com/customtone/tone/224782/ Let me know what you think!!! I am really curious as to how I did. :D For this song (including solo) I use the neck pickup on my strat. Also I notice HUGE differences in my tones if my HD500 is run to another amp instead of the DT w/ L6 link... I am actually going to use one of the set lists in the pedal to copy every tone and set them all up for my other tube amp (what if the DT50 went down during a show :o I need my Carvin VT50 to sound good)
  20. Now on to my next tone.... to find the amp and pedal Petty used to record "last dance."
  21. Thank you very much!! This video doubled with a nice guide by MeAmBobbo has REALLY helped! Simply: I am now using the Brit j-800 Pre (set at about 50% drive) with a screamer in front for solos and pre EQ @ 20% drive. With just this the tone is great. To add more to it what I have done now is: Dual amps so I can use Dual Cabs for their characteristics, I am using the cabs MeAmBobbo talked about: Hiway and the XXL 4x12 Both Pre-Amps are set 50% for Drive, EQ's, Pres The only Cab parameter I adjusted was the Decay and I cranked this to 100% ... everything else is the default settings. I would link the tone but I am not sure how to do that in the forum.
  22. Right now I am tryig the tweed B man pre (i only use the pre amps as was suggested when running to the DT 50 w/ L6 Link) With a screamer infront of it.
  23. Howdy folks!! You'll have to excuse me, I generally find what I am looking for just searching through... so this is my first time posting here (or i can't remember if i have posted or not), sorry if something simular has already been covered I am working on trying to come as close to the tone in this song as I can... with little to no luck. Maybe I am just too much of a newb with this. What I have is the Pod HD 500 into the DT50 head using the L6 link. Guitars: usa strat hss deluxe usa tele standard usa prs swamp ash special The closest I get is with my strat ... but that is due to the guitar and not the poor ability of mine to work with the unit. Sometimes I think about just getting back to an old tube amp with stomp boxes (less is more) ... but i think (after hearing from so many others) that with this set up I could do so much more. With this equipment I think I would have the ability to pull this tone off... /cry ... : ) Has anyone come up with a tone for this song that they would be willing to share? any recomendations would be lovely too!!
