  1. During this Covid period I modded the amp myself successfully but took the amp to an actual Mesa authorized tech to look it over and correct anything I may have done wrong. They said I did a great job and they just cleaned up some solder connections a bit. The problem I am having is that if I have my HX Effects in the loop of the Rectifier, as soon as I go to connect a TRS to tip/ring cable from the external channel switching jacks on the Recto into my HX Effects the Rectifier bugs out! It produces a very loud buzz and hum if if there's a ground issue or something to that effect. Channel switching also does not work. However, if I take the HX Effects out of the Mesa's FX loop it then switches channels correctly. It's just that I can't have it in the loop AND also have it connected to the HX for external channel switching. I've tried everything, plugging the amp and HX into different outlets, tried every possible connection, tried with and without the Recto footswitch connected etc. The amp just will not tolerate both being connected in the loop and also having the external switching connected. Anyone come across this?

Go to Global Settings>MIDI/Tempo and set MIDI PC Tx to Off. With that parameter on, the HX Effects automatically sends the PC associated with each preset whenever you load that preset

You sir are a God among men!! It worked, thank you so much! Question, how come turning that off doesn't also disable the midi program change commands set for changing my amp channels? They still work (thank God), just curious.

  3. Hi guys, I've done some more testing and can use help from anyone that has a midi amp and can confirm this for me. First, today I factory reset my HX Effects but that did not fix this issue. Second, I thought the issue only affected the first 3 presets but scrolling through presets today I found this affects several other presets up to 6C 80's Craze. After that preset no other presets exhibit this behaviour. So here's the thing... when I switch to preset 6C it switches my amp to channel 3 and also engages the boost. In my amp manual that is midi program change command 013 (effectively 12 in the HX as it starts with program change 0 as 1). Going into Command Center there are no quick commands set, nor footswitch assignments etc. I cannot figure out where the hell these midi signals are coming from in these presets. Yet, if I copy over a blank preset to the 6C slot, switch off to another preset and reset my amp channel and turn off boost it still does the same thing when I switch back to 6C. So you see how detrimental this is as there are a number of presets I cannot use at all as changing to them switches to a channel I didn't set and, in this case, also switches on the boost.

There has to be people on here with midi enabled amps. Can someone kindly connect the HX to their midi amp and go to preset 1A and let me know if your amp channels change each time you step on 1A? And also see what happens when you switch to preset 6C?

I get this bizarre problematic behaviour with the following presets no matter whether I factor reset or load other clean exported presets into their slots: 1A, 1B, 1C, 3D, 4A, 6A, 6B, 6C. I'm on firmware 2.82.0 btw.

  4. Hi guys. I'm experiencing something truly strange and it's only happening on my first three presets (1A, 1B, 1C). I have my HX connected via midi to my Bugera TriRec footswitch. On the first three presets if I press on the footswitch for the preset a second time it changes channels even if there is only one channel change programmed. For example, I have a "Blank" patch where I only have a midi program change to recall channel 3 on my amp. If I switch to the preset and simply hit the footswitch a second time it switches to my clean channel. To make things more bizarre, if I then change to preset 1B which starts on the clean channel 1 it then calls up the preset but switches the amp to the distorted channel 3. Pressing on the footswitch of a preset a 2nd time seems to "flip" my channel selections. If I press it again to get it back to the correct channel then change to preset 1A or 1C it then correctly calls up the correct channel. And bizarrely, preset 1B keeps calling up Channel 2 when I don't have it programmed to use any channels but 1 and 3.

I checked EVERY possible setting and nothing worked. I noticed patches past 1C don't exhibit this behaviour and I tried copying them over to 2A, 2B, and 2C and it works flawlessly. Additionally, stomping on a preset again does NOT change the amp channel . I've copied the correctly working patches over to slots 1A, 1B, and 1C and they still exhibit this odd behaviour. So, I'm just going to work from bank 2 and on. I'm just so damn perplexed why this odd behaviour is only happening on the first three presets. It also does it if I copy factory presets over to those slots and assign amp channel changes via midi program change.

  5. I'd like to submit a suggestion to increase the snapshot count to 6 on the HX Effects. I think it can easily be done and here's how. Yes I know there are 4 pedals assigned to the 4 snapshots with the BANK or PRESET or SNAPSHOT up/down footswitches on the lefthand side. However, I noticed that the TAP/TUNER footswitch does nothing when tapped, only when held (tuner mode). Perhaps it can be programmed to enter 6 snapshot display by tapping the TAP/TUNER footswitch. Then to change banks/presets etc just tap the TAP/TUNER switch again to display it.

4 snapshots is a bit harder to work with as one snapshot I always have assigned as completely clean (no effects), usually for my high gain rhythm parts. Luckily most of my songs I can easily make due as most don't have much effects at all. But those that do often have either different effects or different effects settings on different parts of the song so having two more snapshots would be amazing.

  6. Just curious to hear if anyone here is using a Helix family effects unit in their older Mesa Rectifier effects loop that has been modded to series. The multi-watt I ordered had horrible phasing so I returned it. I used to own an older Triple Rec and had the loop modded to series and it worked perfectly with my prior Boss GT units. So if the older model with modded loop works without any audibly phasing or anything with a Helix/HX effects unit I would love to know as I would consider buying a used Rectifier.

  7. Well I am now happy as hell!!! I finally got amp channel switching working on my Bugera TriRec with the HX Effects. My dumbass never realized the Bugera footswitch has a midi in!! I'm very well versed with midi having used it for over 20 years. I was on the train and just thought to look at the Bugera manual. One thing I found that was interesting was the channel switches are non-latching. I was able to get stomp control working with a TRS cable with momentary switching but still was unable to get instant commands working for switching when changing snapshots. Anyhoo, when looking at the manual earlier I saw the midi in so I hooked up a midi cable, setup the midi channel and program change numbers and bingo! EVERYTHING switches flawlessly - channels, boost on/off, etc.

  8. So I spoke to a Mesa tech today. His answer was all the things I mentioned (effects send changing the amp volume if adjusted when the loop is disengaged and the bleed from the gain channels) are normal. His answer as to why I was getting phasing with the HX Effects was "Some units work better with some amps than others". Yeah. Well my HX Effects works flawlessly in the loop of my Bugera TriRec. Whatev's, it's already in FedEx's hands.

There is a setting where instead of Low/Bright where its off/??? and that should do it, but then in each snapshot you don't want a color, you have to unassign/assign the current color to 'Off'.

Check the title of this thread... I said I set it to off and it doesn't turn them off when inactive. It only made the stomps fully off when inactive.

So you're telling me that if you set a color for your Snapshot, say green on Snapshot 2, and you then activate Snapshot 1 on your unit the LED ring for Snapshot two fully turns off? Cause it doesn't on mine unless I leave the color set to automatic - and on automatic it assigns red to every snapshot.

I can live with it being red on each Snapshot but *it would be nice* if I could set all my Snapshots that are clean channel to green and all those distorted to red and have the light fully off when inactive. Does seem like an oversight by Line 6.

    Hello all,

I have bought the hx stomp last week. I use it with a guitar Ormsby gtr7 and Reaper tool to record myself. I have a metal project (only for recording) and before I used a Pod HD.

My problem is: I saw a lot of videos / tutorials on how to create tones, I have bought good IRs and I can not have a metal tone that is "naughty" but at the same time "clean" without too much crunchy noises. And my Pod HD was able to doing this. But when I am listening all those tutorials on YouTube, they sound awesome.

Can you please help me? I do not really understand where the problem comes from...

Have you tried using dual amps? That's what I do. Not sure if the stomp does dual, and if it does you'll run out of dsp pretty darn quick, but for Helix Native I use a Line 6 Epic amp alongside a Mesa Dual Rec. Sounds awesome. I'm using an Ownhammer IR that is a Mesa/Diezel V30 blend.

  11. I've turned off the LED ring in the global settings and it now makes inactive "stomps" no longer lit but for snapshots any one that I assign a color to manually still lights dim when inactive. I want it OFF! It can be confusing seeing a lit ring even though it's dim when it's not in use. Is there some way to fix this? When using automatic it sets all snapshot footswitches to Red but fully turns off the LED when a snapshotis not selected. So I'd imagine there has to be a way.

Some mesa like my dual rectifier have parallèle fx loop. In this case you have to send 100% wet 0% dry to avoir phasing issues.

So it seems I spent 15 minutes or so typing a reply and lost it. Well, not going to retype everything that was lost now, but point was yeah I had the old model as mentioned. I had it modded to series and it was fine. This new loop isn't truly series as Mesa touts it's only series on the clean channel, I've don't extensive testing that proves it. Either way this POS is on the way back to Sweetwater. Mesa really dropped the ball on this version.

Do you have the EXT AMP commands assigned to footswitches in the HX Effects, or are you just trying to use Instant Commands?

I've tried it both ways and it didn't make any difference. The manual seems to suggest channels won't switch unless footswitches are assigned but maybe that was an old firmware. It switches with just the instants on the Mesa, just with the Bugera I have to tap to a scene with no instant assigned then tap one with an assignment for the channel to change. But yes I tried assigning footswitches to EXT Amp extensively, I've tried every possibility I can imagine. I also just tried EXT AMP 2 and set the port to AMP in global preferences and NOTHING happens with the scenes set *exactly* the same way just set to EXT Amp 2 instead of 1. This is seriously bizarre behaviour. With two different amps now I cannot seem to make successful or consistent amp channel changes.

For the Bugera, try this. On each Snapshot, set Instant Command 1 to "NONE", then set IC2 to the proper selection.

In Global Settings>Preferences, set Snapshot Edits to RECALL. Once all the Snapshots are working, then go to the Snapshot you want to load first and SAVE.

The Dual/TripleRec is a PITA to get to work. I've worked with a couple of users on different versions, and the only way we've gotten it to work was with MIDI and the VooDoo Labs Control Switcher.

Thanks for the suggestions, really appreciate it. Unfortunately I tried them with no success on the Bugera. It still requires I first select a Snapshot without an amp switch command set to actually make the changes happen. If I go from Scene 1 on Green Channel to Scene 2 Red channel nothing happens unless I first stomp on Scene 3 with nothing assigned then stomp on Scene 2 and it changes. Seriously bizarre but it seems like the Bugera is constantly holding onto the channel until it gets some kind of "let go" command. I've tried the footswitch amp channel changing set to both momentary and latch and no difference. With the Mesa everything actually switched and I was very excited then noticed that it would sometimes change to the wrong channel as mentioned before. Tap through a few scenes and all is looking good then next thing you know you tap Scene 2 and now it's on the clean channel instead of Red Modern! That absolutely cannot happen in a live setting. Hell not even for rehearsal.

  15. I've had a channel switching problem that I originally put down to my Bugera TriRec. Figured it's a cheap amp and that must be the problem. However, I recently bought a Mesa Triple Rec and I used to own one in the past. In that past instance I used it with a Boss GT-10. With the Boss GT-10 it worked flawlessly to have patch changes switch to the appropriate channel - say clean channel or Channel 3 distorted. With the HX Effects I can't get it to work properly and consistently with either the Bugera nor the Mesa. I'm considering picking up a GT1000 tomorrow just to test and see if I have a defective HX Effects.

So here's what it's doing on each amp. I am using a Hosa TRS to Dual Mono ( Tip & Ring both wired to tips) cable. With the Bugera I can get the channels to change no problem so long as I select a scene with no amp switching enabled first. So, let me make this easy. If I have Scene 1 set to clean channel and Scene 2 set to gain channel 2 if I change from scene 1 to scene 2 the amp channel *does not* change. However, if I am on Scene 1 clean channel and then tap Scene 3 (no amp channel changes programmed) THEN hit Scene 2 the amp channel switches! It's like the amp is holding onto the channel until there's a "CLEAR, nothing selected" hit first via another scene. So, I can switch amp channels between presets but each time I must first tap a scene with no amp channel info programmed for it to work. Obviously that is impossible to work with live.

Next: tried the Mesa multi-watt Triple Rec (which is getting returned due to effects loop phasing issues). With the Mesa it switches automatically with each scene change however the results sometime randomly change. So for example I will setup Scene 1 as clean, Scene two Vintage channel, Scene 3, Modern. Switch between them and eventually one channel switches to something it's not assigned to via tip/ring. So I'll switch between them a couple of times all ok then all of a sudden when I go from say Vintage channel 2 to Moder Channel 3 this time I get clean channel instead of Modern Channel 3!

I fell like I'm cursed the past 48 hours. Btw, I'm using Instances to do the switching, using the most recent firmware, and also see glitches there. I'll program in an instance switch setting in a scene like Ext Amp 1 Tip and save the preset and go back to that scene and it will say Ext Amp None WTF!!!???

I had a Roadster and the HX Effects sounded great in that loop. My old Recto was horrible.

How were you using the HX Effects, 4-cable method? I started thinking if using 4-cable would resolve this issue since the signal from the get go would be latent with the HX's internal dsp latency. In other words, right now I have analog signal (no latency) going into the front of the amp, then the HX effects in the loop adds a tiny bit of processing latency which mixed back with the slight bit of analog bleed through causes the phasing. So by putting the entire signal through the HX from the start there shouldn't be any difference in timing between the signals. I could give that a try tonight or tomorrow morning. But if that doesn't work the amp is shipping back tomorrow.

  17. I received a new multiwatt Mesa Triple Rectifier from Sweetwater yesterday and could not believe it when I put the HX Effects in its effects loop (with a completely blank patch, no effects) and got substantial phasing. The new effects loop on the multiwatt's are touted as series. I did some testing and found that only the clean channel is true 100% wet series. The gain channels (2 & 3) still pass a small amount of sound even if I put a distortion model on the HX and turn the level all the way down. What's odd is I've owned a Triple Rec in the past for many years. I had its effects loop modded to series and never had this issue with that older model and a Boss GT-10.

Has anyone else experienced this when putting the HX in a newer Rectifier loop? I've tested connecting a patch cable directly from send to return and that is fine as is my ISP Decimator II G-string (which goes to the front of the amp and also in the loop), however that pedal is analog. I'm guessing the slight digital delay mixed with dry signal is obviously what is causing this. At this point I am planning to send the amp back tomorrow. I need a true 100% wet series loop that doesn't exhibit phasing issues. Interestingly enough I have a Buger TriRec and that has a parallel loop but goes almost full wet and it doesn't experience this at all with the HX in the loop.

  18. OK, so this was totally user error - ME! I didn't set the Ext Amp2 to Tip. Derp. Yeah so it switches now. Still only switches to the channel, not back when disengaged but that appears to be cause of the design of my Bugera TriRec amp's external switching jacks. I'm almost 100% certain if I take a stereo to dual mono 1/4" cable and set the Ext Amp2 to T+R and connect the mono ends to channels 1 & 3 it should switch between the two. Cause the ring will still be wired to the tip of the second mono cable yes?

I guess I don't get why, if it works, you need to do it differently? No, I don't have HX Effects, I have the Floor model. But always curious about how/why people use the different models.

So the reason why I was testing amp switching with the second jack was because my current amp will switch from clean to the distorted channel but not back to clean with a second press. I've tried every single combination of setting (momentary/latch, tip, ring, etc). It only ever changes the channel then won't change back. When I had a Mesa Triple Rec my Boss GT-10 would change the channel from clean to distorted channel 3 and back and forth each hit. Granted, this Bugera amp has three external switching inputs and includes a clean channel input when my Mesa did not. So I was wondering if I would have to either hookup to both output jacks or use a stereo to dual mono cable to be able to switch back and forth. Of course, if I have to use both jacks then I can't deal because I need one for volume/wah, but I was testing and got curious.

Not sure if you're familiar with the HX Effects, but I did say in my initial post, "I went into global settings and set it to Amp2".

For the HX Effects that setting is exactly that - Amp2, and I did indeed set it to Amp2. Still doesn't work.

  21. Can someone please explain to me how the heck to use expression pedal 2 to switch amp channels?? I can switch with ext1 no problems. I can use ext2 for expression pedal control no problem. I went into global settings and set it to Amp2 and still it never changes the amp channel. If I put the cable into jack 1 however it then swtiches. When assigning a control switch I notice the option for ext amp doesn't have a 1 or 2, just says ext amp, I'm guessing this has something to do with it? I've tried assigning jack one as expression in global settings and jack two as amp control but still the channel only switches when the cable is in jack one. What do I need to do to get jack 2 to work??

  22. I'm a Linux guy too, but while it would be cool to use Linux for recording it requires a bunch of time investment using workarounds such as wrappers, alternate (non-optimized) audio drivers, and depending on your distro you might have to install the low latency kernel as well. So for now my setup is two PC's. My DAW is Windows 7, I don't keep it connected to the internet, don't keep Windows Update running, have it highly optimized for DAW use and that is all I use that machine for.

For everything else (internet use, graphic/video editing/website editing, etc) I have my Ubuntu machine which is just as powerful as my DAW. So I get to enjoy my Linux fix and have no headaches or hoops to jump through when I need to work on my music. I am indeed looking forward to the day when all drivers and software are offered natively for Linux.
