It can be battery, old oxidized solder point, failing selector encoder.
Should be properly gone over by a Line 6 authorized tech, it won't be a customer self repair.
-
Sounds like it's time for servicing at an authorized service center.
-
DO NOT use oil.
Not fused to saddle, part of it is string tension.
This is not a DIY operation, and set-up on one of these is not like doing a Strat or some other generic passive electronic guitar.
Should be done by a tech with experience with this guitar. Certain quirks that make all the difference. Will save time, expense
and a lot of grief in the end.
Li-Ion batteries are trickling out there. Can only get so many at a time,... some shipping safety thing in regards to large quantities of Li-Ion's.
So it's limited shipments at a time. But they shipping. Don't know the ETA's, it keeps changing with logistic bottle necks. Keeping checking in
with Yamaha Canada.

Some 2023 Standards are starting to make their way out there.

Best to take it to an a Line 6 authorized service center near you and have them check and adjust the set-up, including intonation.
Magnetic pick-ups need to be set correctly as well to avoid pick-up to piezo interactions in model mode. An authorized tech will know
how to do that.

Use the mini pull down menu for centers that do guitars.

Double check the computer OS compatibility in the Downloads page, for the original Workbench application.
-
Register your product, then log a support ticket. There are three, maybe four things it could be.
None of which are self repairable.
-
What silverhead said,... insulation material.
Get with your local authorized service center and have them deal with it.

It's modeling, best to use the speakers it was modeled for,... use the G12P-80's or Celestion's
closest present day equal.

Online markets have them here in the US. Whether or not they ship cross border to Canada will be the question.
There is product out there. Also check with the Facebook Variax page,... buying, selling and swapping is done there
from time to time, with permission and okays from the Admins of the page.

I the piece magnetic?

Could be the switch (solder point, failing micro switch), could be the bridge pick-up, or a solder point.
Should be troubleshooted by a tech that knows and has experience with the product. Parts from Full Compass
should be good.
Update to that prior post,... it's been 15-1/2 plus years here and 2,800-ish plus Variaxes later,... best approximation.

Early 2011 build. There are about four different reasons for it to fail like that.
Check with the authorized service center in your area. Have them check it out.

Tubes wouldn't make it come up on computer display as a DT112 instead of 212,... only the dip switches would.
Even nudging them by accident (which I caught myself doing couple times). Makes it think there's only one 12"
speaker in there and throws everything off.
Mullards frying it,... maybe, doubt it, maybe stressed it some. Mullards didn't help. Might be recoverable. A Line 6
authorized tech could deal with and would have access to me for any specifics.
-
What silverhead said,....
Do not use any lubricant on that.
Use a Line 6 VDI cable with the Canon housings.
-
You messed with the dip switches.

1- Was it in "Standby" mode when you connected to check the Firmware?
2- Distorted sound could be tubes, could be a solder point on the processor board.
Being an older product, solder points would be starting to oxidize by now.
3- Are the power tubes matched pairs, and did you change out the pre-amp tubes as well?
Having Mullards didn't help. Taking it to a Line 6 authorized shop would have techs who know the product.
If it's reading as a DT-112, then the shop messed up with the processor board setting. Have them check it out.
They can contact us if they want, being an authorized service center.

All sounds the same,....
Last question,... have you been playing it using both VDI and the 1/4" jack at the same time,
to make use of two outputs at the same time?

Don't go there, these are not designed to handle modifications like that.
