There were two bass guitars, a four string (700 Bass) and a five string (705 bass).
Present day Variax models and information,...

Audio gear using both analog and digital circuits, ring like that, or squeal like calling a phone line with a fax machine on it.
Typically would be the result of an artifact of the digital clock frequency showing up on the audio signal path from a loose
or intermittent analog or digital ground connection. Most likely from a filter capacitor on the analog or digital circuit.
This is something that can occur in what is called a mixed signal device,... here being analog and digital.
An older product like that, there will be loose connectors or solder points oxidizing after all this time.
And that is one of our earlier products. Get with Guitar Center and see what they can do for you. The Flextone should
be taken to a Line 6 authorized service center to check it out.

They are mess less expensive because they are a problem.
Use only the actual real Line 6 batteries. Have had problems with others.
Using someone else's would be an unsupported use.
-
They're good, I like them both, and I'm very much a non tremolo kind of player.
No need for detune, since Variax has Alt Tune mode.
-
It's a matter of taste regarding what style of body, switch configuration, pick-ups and physical lay out that you like.
A Gibson person,... the 59, traditional Fender blues or rock,... the 69. At that point it's a matter of personal taste.
And the Workbench HD app is good when you want to mix things up and go pretty much where you like with modifications.

Do not use 3rd party batteries, we can not vouch for other companies batteries, and all too often are unreliable.
Have had issues with those other batteries. Use only those with a Line 6 label on it. There are no authorized, 3rd party
compatibles out there.

1) Yes, any good TRS cable works. Sometimes the plug dimension don't always fit the jack as good as they should and can result in contact overlap between contacts when in the jack. Variax is an active circuit guitar, so TRS is the thing to use.
2) TRS is fine. balanced XLR out is useful when a mixer with an XLR mic input with buffer is used.
"... pretty close to the unbalanced TS I was doing, and it definitely sounds different tonally ... " ---
unbalanced TS will have a slight impedance difference than balanced TRS, and so a corresponding difference in tone with impedance,
being that impedance is a function of and cause and affect relation with frequency.

Workbench HD is also useful for creating a library of custom patches with custom tunings.
Check the Line 6 Downloads page.

The potentiometer retainer nuts are under the volume and tone control knobs. If they are loose,
an intermittent chassis ground can occur.
-
There is no Mk1 or Mk2.
Do you have some photos for me to look at (shots with head stock numbers are helpful)?
I'm the guy at Line 6 that services these Variax guitars (JTV, Standard and Shuriken).

Have a Line 6 authorized tech do a thorough check on connectors and solder points.
20+ years, some connection points will oxidize and degrade over that time.

1- Dual tone effect,... hearing the standard tuned strings at the guitar and alternate tuned strings from the amp.
Very apparent with 1/2-step down (semitone difference) as that and a tritone are the most dissonant of the intervals.
Not using amps,... carefully,... carefully bring up the amplitude. 1) turning up the amp, you hear more amp an less string,
2) over the ear headphones, or in your case in-ear monitors.
2- Warbling,... a result of the pick-up heights not correctly adjusted and set, and can aggravate #1 even more.
3- Tuning and intonation,... has to be more spot on than with regular passive electronic guitars.

The Workbench HD app is good for dialing in patches to where one likes it.

I hear the term squank every now and then.
-
Thank you. Once I got it up to where it should be, I couldn't put it down, just kept playing it.
Made certain it was set-up for your climate. Good.
-
Acoustic 12-string whistling howl would be tuning or intonation needs to be dialed in.
Warbling is a result of pick-up height adjustments. Sometimes referred to as zwiggabibble or squank.
And Squonk is a song by the band Genesis.

"... why would it trigger on for 1/2 second every 22 seconds? " --- a short circuit. Three or four reasons for that.
Needs to be troubleshooted by an authorized Line 6 technician.

The one with the tremolo is an 89F.
Register the guitars in your Line 6 account, then log a Support ticket in your account.
Sound like it will need to be gone through by an authorized Line 6 technician.

Never run a tube amp without a speaker load on the output.
-
Shurikens would have the current Flash v2.23 program. There are no updates beyond that.
-
It's up to v2.02 for some time now.
