  1. ...one RTFM comment is enough ... and I accepted that one graciously.

but returning with a 2nd references to RTFM in the same thread is not proper forum etiquette ...

and I would greatly appreciate it if you would not come back with a third reference .

  2. Is it possible to record a passage of me playing something and record it with the built-in looper, and then have the POD just continually play it back while I monkey with the EQ at the same time?...

yes, it is. just place the looper in the PRE position using the FS3 (talkin' abt BUILT-IN LOOPER, NOT FX-LOOP)...

    quoting from "POD HD500 Advanced Guide v2.10 - English ( Rev A )", page 8-2:

PRE/POST - Toggling the FS3 switch determines the position of the Looper in your Signal Flow, which dictates whether Amp & FX processing is added to your guitar signal during the recording of your Loop, or only for the Loop’s playback.

    • PRE (FS3 switch light is Off): Your guitar signal is recorded unprocessed (i.e. - the Loop is recorded “pre†Amp & FX processing). When played back, the Loop audio is mixed with incoming guitar to feed the current Preset’s Amp & FX processing. If you change Presets or tone settings while set to PRE, you’ll hear them applied to your Loop playback.

    • When the Looper is set to PRE, the Pre/Post icon appears as “POST,†to indicate that pressing the PRE/POST footswitch will set the Looper to POST.

    • POST(FS3 switch light is on): Your guitar signal is recorded processed (i.e. - the Loop is recorded “post†Amp & FX processing). When played back, the Loop audio is mixed with incoming guitar AFTER the guitar signal has been processed through the Amp and FX. This provides the ability select a new Preset which is applied only on your guitar input, while the Loop plays back with the original recorded Preset tone

  3. ..Not a good comparison - POD X3 and POD HD are entirely different hardware platforms so yeah of course they are going to be different. AFAIK, all JTV's are using pretty much the same processor and electronics...

correct me if i'm wrong, but i believe jtv uses more powerful/next-gen processor+completely upgraded electronics than the old variaxes (like pod hd over pod x3 does).

generally speaking, the jtv has next gen hardware, but when she was released the v2.n hd firmware/workbench was not ready, so she initially was matched 2 the old workbench 'n flashed with the old v1.9 f/w, which of course  was underrated regarding the hardware potential,  consuming only a small portion of the available horsepower.

so may b clay-man's comparison is a good one...

    just guessing...

  4. I've bought a variax jtv59 model and I'm very excited about it. However, there is a point I can't understand so I wonder does somebody could help. The fact is everytime I change tune to 1/2 down, the sound gets octaved as it was in the 12 strings model for instance. Is it normal? Please help me! Thanks and regards from

    Brazil!

I found what the problem was. This effect only appears when I´m using the Guitar Rig interface for recording. I've tested pluging the guitar direct to the ampli and it's Ok. I don't know why indeed but it's probably related to digital issues.

suppose u solved it out, right?

  5. ...Now I need some guidance on how you guys do the "solo boost" with your 500x units...

    Charles, try one of foll:

    a. Insert an FX loop in ur chain (place it at the end of the chain if u want a plain clean boost, or in front of an amp or dist pedal to drive them harder if u want more gain). Use short jumper cable 2 connect the FX loop out to the FX loop in. Set the FX loop return at taste (eg +4dB). Assign the FX loop to a switch as (clean) boost 4 solos. . If stereo is a must, use appropriate jumper.

    b. Use a Studio eq in ur chain (c abv regarding placing). Set gain at taste (eg +4db).

    c. Assign EXP-1/2 to amp CH VOL (min = rythm, max=solo).

  6.  Quoting from James Tyler Variax General FAQ :

Factory Reset and Updating the Flash Memory

Q: Why doesn't the Factory Reset procedure described in the manual work?
A: The reset procedure described in the JTV manual was removed from the JTV guitars to make room in the memory for the Variax HD Acoustic models that were added in flash memory update v1.80. All JTV guitars with flash memory v1.80 and newer no longer have this factory reset procedure available.

To perform a factory reset, re-install, rollback, or update the flash memory on the James Tyler Variax guitars, please use the following link:

  7. ...I haven't seen a preset for intelligent harmony that left room for an expression pedal...

The "Hotel California" harmony parts change from B-Harmonic-Minor 2 A-Major and back again. Attaching demo patch, where the smart harmony params (key+scale) r assigned 2 the max 'n min values of the exp pedal.

Other similar examples : "We are an American band" attached demo patch harmony solo (changing from D-Major 2 C-Major) , "Highwaystar",etc.
