Great stuff. I name my setlists by guitar or gig-type, but what is really a pain is dragging presets around within a setlist. It isn't horrible but using the mouse in HDEdit is just slow when you want ten specific presets at the top, in specific order, out of 40 you've created there. If the preset files were xml or something you could do it in an editor, but I know why Line6 doesn't want that because there would be support calls from so many ham-fisted users who jacked up their files.

My JTV59 is on order so I'm chomping at the bit to get into both HDEdit for my POD500x and the WorkBench software to see what can be done. What are some of the most common changes people do in Workbench? My focus will be mainstream rock tones ( not metal ) and some use of things like R-billy Greth and Chime ( rick 6 or 12 string ) for softer tunes we use in church.

The great divide
Indianrock2020 replied to Indianrock2020's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
If you define "good player" as one who is willing to study, read, work and tweak, then yes they should be able to get tone from guitar, pedals and amp or modeling. This also assumes all gear used is of at least average quality. But there millions of "good players" who WILL NOT study, read, work and tweak to the tune required by modeling in particular. And it's those folks who keep saying modeling sucks. "So this guy flies to Russia, gets off the plane and notices two drunk people in the airport lounge. He gets on the plane home immediately without leaving the airport and tells his friends back home all Russians are drunks." Same with the ignorant player who tried a multi-effect ten years ago for 3 minutes and continues to tell everyone they suck. -
Incompatible cab/mic combinations in dual amp patches
Indianrock2020 replied to Indianrock2020's topic in POD HD
What I would do is either make both microphones and cabinets the same, or use one of these recommended combinations from an expert. There is a spreadsheet showing how various combinations work out, in terms of one set having a small delay which causes phasing and possibly poor sound. But the spreadsheet doesn't cover all combinations, and MeAmBobbo's fix is to insert an effect that you otherwise don't need into one amp path to even out the delay/phasing. ( way too much trouble ) Recommended mic-cabinet combinations from MeAmBobbo -
The great divide
Indianrock2020 replied to Indianrock2020's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I can't speak to the JTV, yet. But I can talk about my POD HD500x and I don't see how anyone is going to get good tones out of that right out of the box. For whatever reason the factory presets, I'm told ( never used one ) are there to demonstrate something ? ( to the 13 year-old shredder at Guitar Center ). But in fairness with all the different guitars, amps etc you can't expect presets from the factory to appeal to very many people. So, in my experience, there was a lot of reading these forums, checking out patches from others, etc etc etc. I'm not complaining and have now reached the point where I'm very happy with the tones I'm getting. ( better than anything achieved with $800 worth of analog pedals, good guitars and modest tube amps.) That's the great divide because on some Facebook forums as well as on the HD forums here, many are turned off right away because either they don't know how to proceed or just expect instant results. -
Strap locks?

Strap locks?
Indianrock2020 replied to Indianrock2020's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I'm hoping if I get the Dunlop strap locks I can re-use the screws already on the JTV 59 ( either with some soap, wax or maybe a tiny bit of toothpick and wood glue. Assuming the existing screws may be larger than the new ones with the strap locks. I really don't want to be doing any drilling or trying to use new screws if they're any longer than the originals. -
Seems there isn't much point in trying to convince people about gear. Especially when it comes to the "gotta read the manual gear" versus the "just plug in and play gear." I've seen this in so many forums. Fact of the matter is that modeling can get you great tones, and a wider variety of tones than you could probably afford if you had to buy all the guitars, amps and pedals to do it the old way. BUT, you have to read, study, tweak, ask questions, beg, borrow and steal to do it. So my first question when these debates come up is "are you the kind of person who will read, study, tweak, etc. I play in a church that doesn't allow amps on stage or anywhere else, so the decisions are easier in our case. I would guess that a majority of the live music played regularly in the U.S. is in churches of less than 500 members. ( and they are figuring out that uncontrolled amps on stage often lead to bad mixes and customer complaints )

Hard Shell Guitar Case For A Jtv-59?
Indianrock2020 replied to guitarno's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
It works on my strat with the original 1974 case, but looks like I'll definitely want to put in strap locks on this guitar since you're saying it won't fit in most cases with the strap on. -

Does it fit with a modestly padded guitar strap still attached to the guitar? -

Are there audio or sonic advantages to using the vdi cable to a pod as opposed to a guitar cable? -
Strap locks?
Indianrock2020 replied to Indianrock2020's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
LOL, true. Well I placed the order for the jtv59. I think I'll get this case and if the strap will fit in the case while attached to the guitar, there won't be any rush to get strap locks. SKB SKB-56 Deluxe Single Cutaway Electric Guitar Case -

Strap locks?

I've been very happy with the Dunlops that came on my Carvin AE185 ( which will be going on the market when the jtv59 shows up ). Not sure whether to trust the local guitar center with the strap lock install. -
What sort of strap knobs/locks does the JTV59 come with? Any suggestions for going to the locking type if it doesn't have that?

I'm curious how realistic these are for JTV owners. In my case, if I buy a jtv59 it would be running through a POD hd500x into an Alto powered speaker at home and direct via PA mixer at gigs. Do you know what the Gator model number is? I just do local gigs but would want to make sure it supports the JTV59 neck properly. -

Hard Shell Guitar Case For A Jtv-59?
Indianrock2020 replied to guitarno's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Old posting but I'm at the point of wanting a hard shell case for a JTV59 I plan to buy. Under $100 U.S. if possible. -
Oh yeah I remember 8-tracks. I might yet convert to tapping in tempo. It matters more on some songs than others, that's for sure. Some songs, especially with heavy use of dotted-eighth delay would sound best with accurate settings. Of course when U2 developed dotted eighth, things were still pretty low tech: U2 Where the Streets Have No Name delays start 50 seconds in The intro has a bit of palm-muted single-note with delay where the tempo is probably important enough to be precise. Buy a JTV 59?
Indianrock2020 replied to Indianrock2020's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I see Line 6 sells a 25 foot VDI cable which I presume you could gig with in place of a regular cable. I'm leaning towards buying the jtv59 new since the price difference isn't huge ( ~ $600 used vs $999 new ). I'd want a hard shell case also. Guitar Center mentioned a 45-day money back on the used one I considered. I'd assume something similar when buying new from any sort of store or major online retailer. Looks like Amazon has this same cable for $30 http://store.line6.com/accessories/cables/variax-digital-cable.html -
Buy a JTV 59?
Indianrock2020 replied to Indianrock2020's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I rarely play above the 12th fret. Some say once they play the thicker neck for a while, they love it. Since I already own a nice strat, and I really, really like the look of the 59, I'm still stuck on that. Guitar Center has a used one for about $600 with 45 day money back trial period. Still trying to check in with friends who have both strats and LPs. May go to the store and play a LP since that may be as close to the jtv59 as I'm going to find available. -
Buy a JTV 59?
Indianrock2020 replied to Indianrock2020's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
I think I'm really going to at least get my hands on a friend's Les Paul first as some are saying after going from a strat, the neck on the 59 was just too thick. My strat has a Warmoth vintage/modern neck. I'm not sure how my Carvin's neck measures up to a JTV 59 Standard Features on Warmoth Vintage/Modern Construction Necks USA Fender® vintage/original Strat® Heel Shape & dimensions1" Thick 1 Piece OR 2 Piece Neck with fretboard .2" (5mm) thick fretboardVintage single truss rodWalnut skunk stripe and walnut plug at the peghead 10"-16" compound radius fretboard 25 1/2" Scale Flat bottom nut slotCream or black phenolic face dotsPredrilled Neck Mounting Holes -
Accuracy aside, the other reason I don't use tap tempo is because some songs follow others almost immediately. If your guitar part plays a role in the first beats of the next song, and you're busy tapping tempo, then.... On the other hand, switching to the next patch with the correct delay already built-in isn't immediate either. **** I should probably consider changing my global settings so the bottom four foot-switches move immediately from one patch to the next without any Bank switch tapping. I only use one or two foot-swtiches in the top row for effects anyway. It really comes down to preferences and whether your band leader wants delay or not. If you can get close with tap tempo, and it truly only takes two taps, then that is probably faster than switching patches.
-
It may not matter or be noticeable but I've observed tap tempo jump around and land on various millisecond values. Since I never use it, my "test" was using my fingers to tap the tempo while I helped a friend set up his new 500x. This friend always uses tap tempo at gigs. I hard-code the milliseconds in based on the song's tempo and using one of the many delay calculators out there, like: http://tomhess.net/Tools/DelayCalculator.aspx 105 bpm dotted 8th=429 ms This might be what you "tapped" on a song that is really 100bpm 100 bpm dotted 8th= 450 ms First, it may not matter much if tap tempo is inaccurate, but the other issue is changes to tempo at the last minute. Our church music leader has a habit of going with his gut and changing the tempo assigned at rehearsal on Thursday to something else during our brief practice Sunday morning. Most songs are launched by the drummer from a click track. So all my patch creation ( per song ) may still yield an inaccurate delay.
