  1. Why would anyone want to add a DI box to a device that's supposed to be its own DI box? If there is actually noise in the XLR outputs and not the 1/4" outputs, something is wrong.

the more crap you have to add externally to a device like this the further you get from the reason a lot of us purchase a device like this...

Because, like other devices (Kemper for instance I believe), the whole phantom power issue is too often looming it's head. It's not just this unit.

  2. The only cable that is really problematic will probably be the one from the guitar to the input on whatever is first. The rest of them are buffered and will not suck much tone.

That said, if it were me, and I didn't KNOW I was going to use modeling, I'd get an M13 and an M9 used. put one before and one in the loop.

Know that an HD 500X will get you similar functionality, but the M-series is so awesome to use with amps that's what I'd do.

    And your english is fantastic.

  3. ...Ok, so then I hooked up a 1/4 inch cable to the left mono 1/4 inch out on helix, then connected other end to radial eng. pro di box then xlr out to monitor or FOH mixer and NO HISS, SILENT! And no tone degregation. What gives?

I'll tell you what gives, imho. There is nothing wrong with the 1/4" outputs on modeling devices... DI boxes cure a multitude of audio sins... and as a result, I have never used the XLR output from any of my modelers. Fact is, on HD 500, the 1/4" output sounded better to me, and on Helix it sounds the same.

Just get a good D.I. and move on imho.

  4. Almost everything is obsolete in a year's time, now. It's not even about necessity anymore, it's the tech-obsessed, instant gratification culture we've created. I've made my peace with it. It's either that, or go broke buying every new piece of gear that's released. You could bounce from one rig to another every 6 months if you wanted to...but I have neither the time, the energy, nor the funds to do that.

There's truth to that, but the 5+ year old HD 500 is still current and is still perhaps the top of its class. An Axe FX Ultra is still making a lot of people money day after day. And the Kemper has been around for a few years now. Still current.

Helix will be a top-tier product from them for, I bet, 3 - 5 years, and will be useful to me long after that.

  5. I know it's not a long term solution but have you guys tried to make a patch with 2 different sounds on different paths and assign them to the Expression Pedal?

I'm doing this on my HD500 and works very well. So I can blend from a clean sound to a distorted sound without delay.

This is an amazing way to create a patch that "does everything" for you, imho. I've done it, too, with HD 500, and I have messed around with it with Helix, too.

  6. My experience with Line 6 service has been stellar.

Had a JTV a few years back. needed service, they took care of me like I was really somethin' special.

As far as QC goes, I've owned POD, upgraded it to POD 2.0, XT Pro with foot controller, X3 live, M13, DL4, HD 500 and now I have a Helix.

That JTV was the only service issue I ever had, so my own personal experience of their QC is excellent.

  7. (Any plans for a pitch shift effect for up or down tunings? One of my bands plays down a half step. This function would make my life so simple.)

I have to say, you just have to re-tune for best results. Anything I've heard that does this is seriously lacking. I wouldn't want to compromise the awesome sounds of Helix by doing this, myself.

  8. My 'b-stock' Mission L6EP1 showed up today! Not sure where the flaws are, looks perfect! Also picked up a pair of the pedalboard mounting risers! Have two of the EP1's now, pretty psyched to get these mounted on little board (next to Helix, too damn heavy to put it all on one giant sized board..)

For starting, when I get past using Helix by itself, and want to expand into the exp pedal / wireless + Helix thing, going to try a relatively simple rig to start with:

onboard exp1 = wah only. toe switch will toggle wah on/off, i would imagine this is as close to 'regular' wah type action I am going to get.

    exterior exp2 = volume pedal

exterior exp3= tweak? more / less? morph? not sure yet. Might just assign it to mix parameters, maybe even just for a few effects, until  I get a better sense of how to use it to 'morph' between values.. sort of like semi-wet, semi-dry. Or some set in between alot wet and not as much wet.

Open to ideas and suggestions!! :)

    Cheers!

    Good solution.

If you want to "add" an EXP, there are two ways to do it. One. Make the EXP 1 a volume pedal, set it so that when you hit the toe switch it turns off the Volume pedal and turns on the Wah... there... two in one... somebody else here discovered that neat idea.

OR... you could very easily use a VP with an insert loop on the Helix, just go out into the VP and back in. IT's buffered at that point, so it's not gonna suck tone.

    But your solution ain't bad.

  9. And how did you get 1.06 before the rest of us? LoL

Beta testers had it only a VERY short while before it was shown at NAMM. A couple days I think, no more.

I found a great Matchless tone in seconds with it, though, so I'm not surprised that Glenn already had it workin'.

  10. Peter, thanks for the post.  Used to follow you on the Tom Anderson board a few years ago when I had my Crowdster Plus.  At the time you could send the Crowdster in to modify the Crowdster to a Plus 2.  Chose not to do it and sold it.  Playing with a PRS P22 Piezo bridge.  Looking forward to trying it out with a 2 cable setup.  I run it single and then use the blend knob.  Great sound with the T and Helix.

I agree amsdenj on the acoustic amp.  Getting some good sounds use the Mic Pre but would be nice to have a dedicated amp.

Dude, the P22 is an unbelievable guitar. Except for not being able to afford it, I've been gassing for one forever. I recommend them to guys all the time.

That new Firehawk 1500 looks like it might be the deal for the amp to handle electric and acoustic both. I am not sure it can do them simultaneously though...

  11. I have not yet loaded the last firmware update.  Does anyone know if I can load v1.06, when it's released, without the previous update installed?

    G-

I wouldn't chance it, actually. Go ahead and upgrade to the latest if you can first.

    But I could be wrong.

And yes. the Matchless is worth waiting for. Very awesome.

  12. Learn controller doesn't do what you think (or what I thought it would do, which is different from what you think)

It's not to learn positions, it's to learn WHICH controller you want. So... you select your parameter, and instead of manually selecting the controller, you push "learn controller and rock the pedal... THEN... you manually input the min and max.

I just figured this out recently.

  13. And this is why I love the helix and definitely give major respect to line 6 and the helix team. It will be very interesting when we fast forward five years and the helix is the standard in guitar modellers and line 6 is recognized for its support of its products.

In terms of their ability to deliver large quantities... 5 years is too long.

That said, Axe and Kemper are standards, too. No doubt. And HD 500 already was the standard in ITS class... I've found their support to be great.

    ...so... yeah...

  14. Sweetwater is out of stock again !! Cabbage Patch dolls all over again !

I worked retail at a catalog showroom when they came out. Never seen anything like it before or since.

Somehow, word always got out that we had them. To see grown men in suits hurdling over gates and crawling under our security door to get in to buy one of those... insane... only in 'murica...
