  1. Sorry.I was specifically referring to Stratocasters and Telecasters with single coil pickups. Not super strats like John P plays with humbuckers and Mesa amps and judicious processed gain boosts.Much of what Jeff Beck / Robin Trower/ Eric Johnson etc...do is very different.Much more straight into the amp players.Thats more the way I play as well. So the neck mass becomes more important .Trower specifically plays Stratocasters with large headstocks for the additional mass at that end of the instrument.Yes you can always compensate with more processing/ gain boosts after the guitar I agree.I just dont do it that way much anymore.I remember a very good player and friend of mine bought one of the first Steinberger headless guitars. Everyone was very excited! That guitar sounded like total crap unless it was heavily processed lol! Absolutely awful. At least the JTVs are made out of wood lol!

We all have different theories about this stuff.I would also add that Mr. Petrucci plays at a very very loud volume which also changes the neck factor. At more moderate volumes the neck differences are much more apparent. I have played the Petrucci model acoustically.I did not like it at all.But I am not that kind of player.

  2. The neck size and shape on any bolt on electric guitar has a lot to do with the sound of it.Jeff Beck plays those big baseball bat thick necks for a reason. I will avoid changing the neck on my JTV as long as possible as it contributes much to the bigger tone it gets.Little skinny neck equals thinner tone. This is what I have found after 30 years of neck swapping on many many bolt on electric guitars.

  3. Just to balance out some of the negative posts re: our beloved JTV.

Played a 250 seat nice club ladt night and used it all night.Unusual for me as I typically start with one guitar then finish with another.Besides being a great gigging instrument its stability tuning and otherwise make it a killer guitar synth controller.Mine had a GK3 pickup installed when I bought it.

    Straight ahead jazz standards

    Country

    Funk

    Blues

    Alt/ Metal

    Beatles

    etc...

through a Vox Night Train head and 1x12 cab with a Boss ME70 front end.I also use a Palmer cab sim instead of using a mic on the cab.

Cheers to Line 6 for giving us a real working mans tool just as Leo Fender did in the 50s!

    well done!

  4. Playing in a Robin Trower Tribute band these days I know what a 50 watt JCM800 cranked up through 4 Celestion V30s sounds like.

    Glorious!

The best sounds I have ever gotten that I personally like from my HD500 are through the return of several of my tube amps.

This morning through my 16 year old DSL401 the POD kills with cabs turned off.Funk Blues Metal Countey Roots Jazz etc...

great useable tones and way more convenient than my Trower pedalboard lol!

Dont give up on the POD.Everytime I dont use it for a while and then like today fire it up it surprises the hell out of me.

For the price used these days it is tough to beat.Be patient and you figure out a combination you like.

Another killer setup is an original Flextone with a good aftermarket speaker( the stock speaker sucks) and run the POD through the effect return.I see those amps for $150 from time to time.

    good luck!

  5. If you plan to play heavily detuned palm muting staccato djent etc... I would avoid it. It is really made for getting a lot of different " conventional" sounds which it does very well.I dont delve a lot into the tunings but they work for me.Funk/ Blues/ Country/ Straight ahead Jazz/ Reggae /Dance music etc... its tough to beat. The Gretsch/ Rickenbacher and the P90 guitars are very good with a good tube amp.

    Hope this helps a little

    Good Luck!

  6. I am a tube rolling experimenting power tube kind of guy for 30 plus years. Its fun with forgiving circuits- Fender - Marshall- Laney etc...

However I would absolutely never put anything in a Line 6 amp but what it is specified pre and power.Especially the PI tube next to the output tubes. The way these amps are designed their is nothing to be gained by experimenting with tubes/ bias etc...

Get an old beat to death Bassman or some Peavey or something for that.

  7. Electric guitars played through amps virtual or otherwise are inherently noisy.EMGs and some variants a little more so but my EMGs( I dont use anymore) would still hum/ buzz like heck in certain venues. Go see Eric Johnson or Robin Trower and the first thing you here is a 60 cycle buzz.Until they start playing at volume. Then all you hear is Marshall gloriousness.Understanding the noise floor and getting the guitar to exceed it is how these guys operate. Playing in a studio/ through headphones etc... is somewhat unnatural for electric guitar. With all the technology we have now we spend our time scrutinizing noises chirps blurps etc...trying to sanitize what made us want to play the damn things in the first place.Crank your noisy guitar up through a real good tube amp and you wont hear any of this noize. You will hear what an electric guitar is supposed to sound like.

I am a big advocate of all things HD/ Variax/ guitar synthesizer etc... but realize that the noises are a part of passive pickup- tube amp technology.

Its funny we spend a gazillion dollars removing all the distortion etc...from our guitars and amps and processors. Then we turn around and spend a bazillion dollars more and thousands of hours of time putting it all back in.Its ridiculous.Guitars are noisy and I love that noise.

"The Fenders are for the music. The Marshalls are for the noise."- Robin Trower

  8. I must chime in here. I played my JTV 69 with Roland synth pickup through a Marshall DSL 401 and Fulltone GT500/Boss DS-1/Boss Compressor and a Zoom MS50G at a packed 200 seat club full of St Paddys Day revelers last Friday night and I will tell you that through a well maintained tube amp it absolutely kills.I think it is the most fun guitar I have to play but it is a serious instrument not a toy. Funk/ Jazz/ Blues/ Dance music/ Alternative( using the tunings)/ Country etc...I was able to quickly change to any guitar tone I needed on the fly.

No other production model electric guitar can do that period.Buy it and get in the game.

  9. I have a very cool old Line 6 2x12 I painted with truck bed liner and have 4 different speakers to try in it .Someone gave it to me lol! It is a very well made cab used by a touring pro for a long time. When the rain/ cold finally stops here I will put my Marshall Haze on top of it and gig that sucker outdoors!

  10. The 44 Magnum is loud as hell with an efficient speaker. When I use it live it is mounted inside the back of an open back 1x 12 cab with a

400 watt Eminence PA driver in it.Its plenty loud with a mic on it or not. I have played gigs with no mic in a 5 piece funk soul band with my Fender Pro Junior with an Eminence Ragin Cajun speaker in it and the sound monkey told me to turn it down.

Loud is never a substitute for good.

  11. Loud warm cleans are possible but you must understand that all the other gainy amp patches will be much louder so channel volumes must be adjusted accordingly.I start with those at around 50% on each patch so I have room and cranke that master output volume up for cleans. Then lower the lead/ gainy patches.

  12. I run my POD into a cab simulator and the front end or effect return of one of my tube amps just for a monitor. The cab sim goes to the PA and the thru output goes to my amp and it absolutely kills.I can turn my amp up down or sideways without blowing the FOH mix.I also use in ears and they sound great.I have to add though that my bands use digital mixers so I always have my own mix controllable with the tablet I have on my mic stand. Its a great setup for a singer/ geetar player. The POD can be used so many ways for gigging. This is my second time around with it and its even more effective and fun now!
