  1. No noticeable latency from the HD via s/pdif running at 24bit /88khz at about 128samples. As I run Addictive drums getting down to 64 samples can start to get glitchy. My PC is quite old and not very much memory. A modern PC with plenty of RAM would easily beat that on a 64bit O/S. But depends on how many Softsynths you have running. If the drums are a pre recorded multitrack with some pre mixing on them to a bus then can get to 64 samples but on my old PC it isn't that stable. The fact is not even at 256 samples is there latency to worry about. The s/pdif is quick. Would not go above that though for tracking.
  2. The guitar DI means direct to your RME via a DI box which takes the unbalance guitar level and converts it to a balance mic level. But you may of meant direct from the HD ( a most glorified DI) via s/pdif into your RME. UX2 I presume is your Line 6 interface which also has a s/pdif out possiblly for vocals or just additional inputs. The answer would be yes , if the RME has two digital inputs. It remains in the digital domain and only converted to analogue once at the monitoring or playback from the PC. But if only one input into the RME then you have Mics into the RME and HD on the s/pdif input as won't be able to sinc both HD and UX2 in s/pdif.
  3. Sounds like a faulty unit or as mentioned a global EQ setting. It stays as it is set. Easy to overlook. But sounds like a unit fault in that you have numerous guitars and I presume they all suffer the same muffled tone. If you could demo a Helix locally that might confirm your issue for you.

    it might be advantageous to download the artist/song you will be performing from Customtone. These patches can be loaded into the HD EDIT program so you can get a look at what you can do in EDIT program but wont be able to hear anything.
  5. Line is -10 and instrument is +4 In reference to dbv Great article! I remember studying another similar that defined the reference as without a reference the figures are meaningless. Makes sense as HD is either going to a mix board or a Guitar amp or HiFi / Monitor Amp

  8. You have the global EQ you can use to adjust from venue to venue. But if your output is other than Studio Direct you will loose low end level unless you tweak it to suit.
  9. Recently I moved into a Unit and am using some Edirol Micro powered speakers after using Rokit G2 6' and the sound is noticeably thinner. I have treated the room with bass traps and broadband absorbers. and the bottom end is tubby. I have also used head phones as well lately ) and these are tubby sounding too. Hardly ever needed anything else past 10 years. Mentioning as it could be your monitoring?
  10. Sounds like something wrong with the guitar in. Also check the input impedience on it and adjust it and see if it changes anything cheers
  11. Man that must be embarrassing. If it is different patches on two different HDs then certainly the wireless would be a contender. (battery power loss would be my guess) Otherwise check for too high a level in the patch for internal digital clipping. The trick is to somehow reproduce the noise in private and isolate the cause.   12. You need a s/pdif input on your interface. An output won't do it. You can select in the output menu of the HD to use the s/pdif out dry for additonal in your computer processing or wet with the HD processing added. Level can also be set. I use this output as it saves a conversion of the digital to analogue as I have an excellent interface. The onboard usb as an interface can do similar without the dry choice.
  13. If you are finger tapping and plucking harmonics you'l want some compression after a noise gate and possibly another noise gate last in the chain. Often a tight almost flanger sounding chorus and a tube screamer befor or after it. Try both at about 20% wet. A tight doubling delay reduced feedback about 80ms more or less depending on BPM. Reverb at the end but if you make a dual amp path without an amp in one and the reverb on that path. Another longer delay on the other path. An para EQ that boost a narrow 4k band with a slight high shelf attenuated down to 2k or less.Hi pass or attenuate the low end to about 120db. The amp you use is up to you, plenty to choose from. You can set it so as to remove bias hum and excursion quite a bit. There are other ways to get a tight chorus sound but it is using pitch shifts. Another EQ after the amps can also help. This is not a copy of the Grig tone, just an 80s tone What you get is amp side and a dryer side that aids attack definition and level to taste with the mixer. Insert another compressor if you need a thinner feel. Or add another distortion FX but another nosie gate will be needed at the end of the chain and your guitar needs to be well shielded.

    Helix vs AX8

    The sound sample is limited chugging and not really representing a cross section of styles. It seemed the Axe 8 sounded better and the Helix rather brash especially onboard cabs.. My guess is the demo guy is already an Axe FX user as I am certain some tweaking would bring the best out of the Helix. I did think his summation at the end was un biased based on what he got from it. All good Pros and Cons but hitting the Helix in the Amp sounds is a knockout really. So perhaps biased is correct

I generally consider the HD a recording cvhain and put the time based FX usually after the amp in stereo before the Mixer block with one each side or after the mixer which is akin to applying FX on a desk channel and Studio Direct. I wonder if the other settings shift where in the chain as I always thought the other settings just removed the cab mic from the chain. Certainly food for thought
  16. That $50k Fender might have a warped neck etc and not be playable and a collectable from its history. There is no doubt the better made guitars are better but the question here is who can tell what is being played on some well made records? What instrument is being played on some unknown's album. Can you hear the difference between a Fender Strat and a Squire Strat? A Gibson and an Epiphone? There must be plenty of youtube videos on it and forum AB tests. I might be wrong but the average joe won't hear a difference especially using some modelling of high gain amps. It is the player who can easily discern the quality difference. IMO
  17. I have other cheap guitars that I have set up well and they are surprisingly good. Nowadays the Chinese factories mostly give you good wood and they make factory made guitars day in day out that are acceptable and can be set up. Of course I haven't tried all guitars. I found Korean Guitars that were not so well made and most impossible to intonate well. I have compared my cheap well set up guitars to very well made USA guitars of friends and most remark how well mine are to play. It is true well made guitars do sound better feel better and inspire more. No argument. I was just answering the question for OP The guitar does matter, it has to be set up well.
  18. Most importantly, a quality iron is needed especially one with a controllable temp. The cheap irons generally aren't hot enough and often fail after a few hours of use. Even someone skilled at soldering can be a failure with a iron that is too cold. The $50 to $100 ones are generally better then $10-20 ones.

  20. Without reading the whole thread I have very ordinary guitars and my basses are much more expensive. Much depends on the set up. I have a georgeous squire strat I bought for $49 from a Pawn shop like new. I swapped out the pickguard with a chinese loaded pickguard $20 off ebay. It sounds awesome but I SET IT UP There is improvement with a well made guitar and hardware and much relates to the playability and the inspiration it imparts but it is a scale of diminishing returns and if they are not set up well will sound. Where a cheap well set up guitar and a very well made and set up guitar differ most can be heard with cleaner tones and joy of playing often worth the cost. High gain removes many differences in quality.
  21. Bass isnt a guitar? I won't take offense as I know your talking about 2nd fiddle etc regarding 6 strings. I would have your gear off the ground at rehearsal so as to not muddy the bottom end and roll off the low end on your guitar. In other words get separation of tone at the rehearsal "space" level. If your amps are on the ground it will be boomier and washed with bass. If the bass is the main melody and you are there for color, I'd cut some broad 1k hz. Next I'd look at your playing; give lots of space by play chords sparsely with varying voicings and clever fills here and there in a relaxed soothing or exciting way depending the tune. Once you find out what parts you are contributing then you can embellish your tones and patches to enhance or assist the song. If it contributes it will be welcome some might not be so fitting. Your style of playing, where on the neck and when you are playing it is foremost to filling out the sound and making the whole band sound big means each player has there own sonic spaces. Once you have parts then patches to enhance but heavy distortion is the opposite of dynamic the tone is clipped and you have added harmonics which thin out your sound but can be used from time to time to give a sense of power but all the time looses it's impact. Till then keep the tone simple and add some ideas given above to enhance like using the looper with a swell that'l fit over a section while you add fills with another patch. I think the band will want a contribution rather than a reinvention and by the sounds of it want sustained chords with verbs and chorus but really your playing style can be all the color that is needed.
  22. I'll second dunncan on lowering the drive on the Panama to about a third to near half way. It still drives well but over 50% it is too washy with gain.
  23. The USB connector replacement is the way to go. Use a wick or solder sucker to clean off the joints and I think the fixing lugs might also be soldered to the board to prevent the USB socket from breaking easily. Who knew the internal lug would be the weak link. The work around would be your alternative but it looks like the pins are tinned then the tinned joining wire is soldered after they are all tinned firsts.
  24. Will give it a go. thanks I find that pretty well every amp model can be made sound good but some become our go to as having a quality that suits our style. The cleaner tones are the hardest to achieve mainly in the volume needed without lots of mixer and FX boosts comparing to rolling off the guitar volume and gain on a higher gain amp some clean up okay others get that bite of slight crunch.
