    duncann,

I'm a bit confused.  Are you Steve Vai, or a fan of Steve Vai?

I suppose it might be nice being Steve Vai for a while, but no, I'm not him. Just someone that greatly admires his guitar playing and music writing.

  2. Video Description:
Hey Folks, Vai here. I wanted to challenge myself for my 60th birthday and decided to record a simple trio track. I gave myself some parameters to work within. I told myself I would use a Strat style guitar, (tougher for me to play then a Jem) use a very clean tone, (not conventional for me) no whammy bar, (that’s like losing a body part for me) and no pick, just fingers (way out of my comfort zone).

I also had this idea for a particular type of riff that can only really be played on a guitar with no whammy bar. It’s a technique that I call “joint shifting." This is where you bend a note while fretting another, but I wanted to do this technique with a combination of double and triple stop single note bends while fretting other notes and releasing bends. After considerable experimenting, I discovered it created a unique sounding passage. You can hear this technique on a few sections of the song. I certainly hope other ambitious guitar player see the potential in this technique and take it to the moon!

We shot this quick little video of me performing the track at my Harmony Hut studio.

During this period, the world is slowly starting to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic. Many people are still facing challenges and are eager to find entertainment on the internet. I have seen the best come out in many people during this challenging time. When people join together with a common positive intention, the power surge they create within the collective is the healing element that is most needed. Like many little candles coming together to burn as bright as a star.

I needed a title for the song, and with the above in mind, and the fact that it’s my 60th, I choose the title “Candle Power."

We are even issuing a limited edition commemorative “Candle Power” candle in the new vai.com merch store that also comes with a high-quality download of the song: www.vaimerch.com

    Enjoy!

  3. There are three of those type of flanged washers:

    30-03-0069: has the largest flange

30-03-0075: same length as first listed part, but the flange is smaller

30-03-0074: same size flange as first listed part, but part length is shorter

These came in the kit mentioned by lungho. Each part is individually bagged with a part number sticker.

It’s not a question of the difference that justifies their inclusion in the Helix family of products. IIRC lots of users were bemoaning the fact that Helix didn’t include many of the FX they had enjoyed in the HD and M Series of products. It seems, rather than alienate some users, they ported all the old effects across. One particular old favourite of mine is the Dimension D model. Plus, strangely enough, some people actually preferred some of the old models.

    Hope this helps/makes sense.

I was one that was glad they did this. Before it was in HX, I also missed the Dimension chorus. And the octo reverb on the HD sounded better to me than on Helix.

I'm on the Helix floor, I have the same issues I had with 2.90 and posted about now that I am on 2.91, I had sticking momentary midi footswitches on 2.82 but it was otherwise usable.

I am getting total freeze/lockup after a few minutes of use with 2.90 and 2.91, not sure what's triggering it. I'll still get sound, but everything is locked up and unresponsive, footswitches, joystick, display etc... Basically requires a shutdown and reboot to act normal for a few minutes, and since I use it with a DAW as the interface all that needs to be shutdown and restarted as well, it's almost unusable for even just practicing with the constant rebooting. I am using a great deal or midi signals to and from controllers, and to and from the Helix to a laptop DAW, including having the laptop give the Helix a master bpm via midi. So not sure if all the midi is triggering it, but it looks like plenty of others are getting lock ups as well. This hotfix came fast, but should I be submitting a support ticket?

I'm new to Helix as of 2.82, so I don't know what to expect from updates and hotfixes, or how fast and complete hotfixes are

I reported strange midi behavior when 2.80 first came out and sent Line 6 a Reaper project file and preset that reproduced the behavior, including crashing Helix by sending a clock signal from Repear. They acknowledged the problem, but apparently it is not fixed as of 2.91.

The problems I'm experiencing only occur when HX Edit is open and connected. So if you're using HX Edit, try without it to see if you still have problems.

Fwiw, LED rings of switches assignd to Snapshot commands still can't be color coded in 2.91. Not much of an issue, though.

As far as I can tell, it's there.

    On device:

    Push preset knob

    Push rename snapshot encoder

    Turn switch LED encoder

    HX Edit:

    Right click the snapshot field.

Can i go to 2.9 directly from 2.71 ?  or do i need to go to 2.82 first ?  i keep reading conflicting opinions on this.

It's easier and faster to go to 2.9  directly? Taking in consideration that 2.8 was not a " quick " update  ?

Yes. I went from v2.71 to v2.90. I also did it from the HX Edit interface, rather than using Line 6 Updater.

In case someone's interested in this, I finally found a solution for the effect I was trying to achieve thanks to the Throbber effect in the Legacy filters (speed 0.1hz, wave Ramp Up).

The only problem left is to make the sweep begin when the effect (or, even better, the snapshot) is engaged; from my tests with Native it seems like the filter always moves and the sweep doesn't start over from its frequency starting point with Snapshot or Patch changes. Is it something that only happens in Native?

Not sure if it works on legacy effects, but you can reset an LFO by sending a value with CC64, or engage/release the tap tempo button once.

    What is now?

As soon as you try to define it

    Is becomes was.

    Ponder awhile, oh my brothers...

    While you wait  :-)

Lol. There has long been experimental evidence that the brain is capable of making decisions before you're consciously aware of said decision. So that seems to make the moment of a conscious thought, our perception of now, actually the past.

Well this should solve the million threads about the need for meters.

Yea, but are they going to be granular enough?

  11. It's probably really difficult to give a very specific response for that kind of sound, but generally, take a look at the particle verb (stable condition) in the legacy category for reverbs. In addition, try combining it, either serially or on a parallel path or even both, with other reverbs that are not in the legacy category. Might find a combination that appeals to you better than what's in the video.

Goes with saying, that's a nice guitar in the video.

So how about an envelope-controlled phaser or chorus?  Is it possible to somehow "tweak" things to add envelope control to a block model that doesn't already have it built in?

There's an envelope flanger, I think it's the dynamix flanger.

There's no envelope controller that has an ability to operate on an arbitrary block. Wish there was though.

  13. Didn't see it mentioned in the release notes, but It appears they fixed the LFO reset problem.

HX Edit still has a repeatable disconnect problem under certain circumstances when using Helix's midi over usb, but not when using an alternative usb-to-midi cable going to Helix's midi ports.

Are we talking about the same thing?

Unsure, perhaps not. I record to Reaper using Helix's ASIO drivers, but I don't use Helix as the system soundcard, which I have disabled for both playback and recording. This conflicts with your second statement above.

On Windows... only one ASIO device can be used at a time.

    • If you set the Helix as the Asio Device, then the DAW can use it as inputs, but it will also use it as the output.
    • If you set another interface as the Asio Device so you can use it's output, then the DAW will only see that Devices inputs as well... not the inputs from the Helix (or HX Stomp)

That is not a limitation of the Helix... that is a limitation of Windows.

On a MAC you can aggregate devices and use them all.

I have another device acting as the system soundcard and Helix's spdif output is connected to this, then to the speakers/headphones.

The detail I just realized that might shed light on possible confusion is that I'm using Helix Floor, not Stomp. Is USB functionality really different between these devices?

    Clarification -

Helix USB can be used with HX Edit REGARDLESS of whether Helix is the sound card.

Helix USB can only be used to record directly to DAW when Helix IS the sound card.

L6 did a good job keeping the two functions separate.

The second statement doesn't seem correct. Shouldn't it be, Helix can be used to record directly to DAW regardless of whether Helix is the sound card?

I'd like to reset the LFO of the sweep echo, but hitting the tap button doesn't work.

I can confirm that LFO reset no longer works on 2.81.0, Helix Floor. I use CC64 sent from Reaper rather than using the physical TAP switch.
