  1. Because it doesn't weigh as much.
  2. I'm guessing the correct term would be can close them. I'm a former smoker and I don't recall ever noticing my eustachian tubes closing when I fired up.
  3. Well I know it is colored by the mic and mic placement among other things, but I'm working on an idea. Or more accurately working on working on an idea.
  4. There is a suggestion on the ideascale to have an option for selecting all of a block's parameters with one or two clicks. Vote for it if you think it's a good idea.
  5. Does anyone know if it is possible to render a frequency response chart with or from an IR?
  6. If the USB/VDI gizmo is showing red lights, it's not communicating with the computer. Send it back.
  7. That and the amp gremlins. Constantly changing things internally and subtley. Just enough to make me doubt my sanity.
  8. The prediction is pretty much the last day of spring. Officially the only recent time frame given was the last part of spring.
  9. Any chance you could post them somewhere?
  10. It has MIDI and 4 FX send/returns. Start there.
  11. Yeah, I miss those descriptions. I still have my Vetta. Had to change the battery. So you're aware of the basic modelling concepts. I've been a Line 6 boy for awhile. The Helix is, for me, what I've been looking for. It has feel where I always felt the other modelers sounded good but sounded "flat" for lack of a better word.
  12. I'm not saying anymore than I said. Don't read into anything. I guess I should have been more clear. I'm referring to one comparison that involved actual people listening to an amp in the studio and the Helix direct. That's the only comparison I've heard spoken about here. I don't know what the other comparisons are or which other ones have been used. Now, are you talking about just the amp modeling? Or the modeling with a cab? If it's with a cab, there are various mics available in the cab sims so the mic they use for the modeling is the mic that is available for the cab sim. The amp alone modeling is a bit different. But yes, with a cab they are modeling a miced amp, or more accurately, they are modeling a miced speaker cabinet. Check out how the Kemper creates an IR for an amp on their website and you'll get an idea of what the modeling process can involve. I can't speak to any of the specifics. Does the mic go into a mixing board or directly into the magic amp sim box that converts what the mic does into a sim. I don't know. But the comparisons that have been spoken of involved peoples ears in a control booth and a completely modeled amp going direct compared to an amp in the studio using the same mic, cab, distance, etc. And since they are listening to it through the same mixing board in the control room through the same speakers, the direct Helix signal and the miced amp signal should be going through the same preamp therefore the preamp's characteristics will be the same for both. That is the only comparison that I know how it has occurred. I'm assuming there are others I don't know about.
  13. I'm pretty sure the comparison is in a studio control booth with a miced amp in the studio and the Helix going direct. I'm not sure how much "in the same room as the amp" comparisons there are.
  14. Well it's definitely less filling but doesn't taste great compared to the many custom brews we have here in my area. And with Han or Greedo there is no debate. Han shot first. Jeese! Glad I could finally put those two discussuions to rest. Now if I could only perfect the amp in a room with a beer on it while Star Wars is playing on a screen, sound, I'd be happy.
  15. A JTV Variax? Or an old Variax? The patch doesn't say.
  16. I don't know if this will help or you already know this but the global EQ has an overall volume slider at the top. I like to run my XLR's at mic level so any sound guy would get the same thing as if it was a mic on an amp. However, since dedicating the 1/4" (for monitoring) to the Volume knob makes the XLR's run as if the Volume knob is up full, I either have to run my patches with a minuscule Channel Level or run the Golbal EQ with a lowered overall level. Right now I run my global EQ at about -13dB to -14dB which then allows me to run my patches at a 2.0-4.0 Channel Level. I still don't like it but that's where I'm at. I'm hoping eventually we will be able to set the level of the output not controlled by the master volume knob, in the software. As another Global parameter perhaps.
  17. Yeah. I know it's mostly a matter of opinion. Many people like the acoustics on the JTV's. Backing off the tone control helps but I haven't found the trick (EQ, mic preamp, IR, etc.) that gets rid of the metallic zing that I hear. I half suspect that a lot of the reason for the zing is the piezo's in the JTV's are set up to be much more sensitive than the ones on the old Variax's. That's why playing with a light touch makes such a difference with the JTV acoustics I think.
  18. I find that the JTV acoustic models sound a little too metallic and/or thin. I actually liked the old Variax's acoustic models better and with a mic preamp in the old Pod X3's, sounded great. Of course right when I came up with that patch the JTV series started and I had to get one. Sigh. Haven't came up with an acoustic sound I love yet.
  19. This was a good article. http://www.guitaradventures.com/10-tips-flying-with-your-guitar
  20. This is from the United website and is pretty standard. Musical instruments Depending on their size, musical instruments can be carried on board, handled as checked baggage, or carried as cabin-seat baggage. In the case of customers who purchased a Basic Economy ticket, a small musical instrument may be carried on instead of a small personal item, subject to the same conditions below. A larger musical instrument that does not fit in the overhead bin and is brought to the gate will be checked to your final destination and subject to the applicable checked baggage fees plus a $25 gate handling charge. As carry-on As part of the allowance of one carry-on bag plus one personal item, a passenger may carry a violin, guitar or other small musical instrument onboard the aircraft if: The instrument can be stowed in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of the passenger; and There is space for stowage at the time when the passenger boards the aircraft Musical instruments transported onboard United and United Express aircraft must be in hard-shell cases. As checked baggage An instrument should be packed in a hard-shell case to keep it protected during normal handling. Excess checked baggage service charges may apply if the customer is checking more than two items. Oversize charges apply to musical instruments that measure 63 - 115 linear inches. Overweight charges apply to musical instruments that are over 50 pounds, but musical instruments weighing up to 165 pounds will be accepted. If the instrument is over 115 linear inches, please contact the United Customer Contact Center. Additionally, customers should loosen the strings on stringed instruments to protect the neck against damage caused by expansion and contraction, which can result from temperature variations during flight. See our Checked Baggage page for additional information about checking items. As cabin-seat baggage United will allow a customer to purchase a seat for a musical instrument that is too fragile or bulky to be handled as checked baggage. Excess Valuation may not be purchased for musical instruments. See our Cabin-seat Baggage page for more information on purchasing a seat for a fragile or bulky item. This doesn't mention this but using a soft case is often required for them to take it as carry on. However, there is a danger of them saying there is no room for it (see section 2). This means it will have to be checked. All airlines have this right. So you risk having to check a guitar in a soft case, which is bad, or having to buy a seat for your instrument. Most of the time there will be room but the possibility there won't be is there.
  21. Make sure in the input section the Variax is set to change models "per preset". I'm not at my Helix so I could be wrong about the exact name of the parameter.
  22. I think it looks bigger and easier to see. I'm guessing it's possible and perhaps would be easy to implement. But I could be wrong.
  23. I gotta remember ANOTHER password?!?!? NO THANKS.
