  1. Howdy folks!!

You'll have to excuse me, I generally find what I am looking for just searching through... so this is my first time posting here (or i can't remember if i have posted or not), sorry if something simular has already been covered

I am working on trying to come as close to the tone in this song as I can... with little to no luck.

Maybe I am just too much of a newb with this.

What I have is the Pod HD 500 into the DT50 head using the L6 link.

    Guitars:

    usa strat hss deluxe

    usa tele standard

    usa prs swamp ash special

The closest I get is with my strat ... but that is due to the guitar and not the poor ability of mine to work with the unit.

Sometimes I think about just getting back to an old tube amp with stomp boxes (less is more) ...

but i think (after hearing from so many others) that with this set up I could do so much more.

With this equipment I think I would have the ability to pull this tone off... /cry ... : )

Has anyone come up with a tone for this song that they would be willing to share?

any recomendations would be lovely too!!

More details if you will. What Amp model are you using?pre or full? Output settings?
  2. In the preset mode, you can toggle through 4 presets in the bank. Each preset within the bank can be shaped by 4 fx that can be toggled on/off. That gives you 20 different ways to drastically alter your tone without having to bank up and down. Least not I forget to mention the 2 expression pedals that could be assigned to eq's, gain on distortions, speed/feedback on delays, Q's on filters, etc.

You really need more than that in one improvised song? If so, the midi pedalboard may be your best bet.

Let me know where you guys play. I want to see the band with the guitarist who's tone changes over 20 times/song! ;0)

  3. This is my first forum post, so apologies if I've missed this topic in my forum and general internet searches.

I've had a POD HD500 for about a half year now, and generally love it.  However, I find myself wanting an option that allows the bank up/down footswitches (in ABCD mode) to immediately activate the preset in the new bank corresponding to the currently selected channel, rather than require a 2-footswitch selecion (up or down bank footswitch followed by channel A-D footswitch).

Has this been discussed previously?  Would anyone else find this useful?

My usage is in an experimental improv trio, where frequent tone changes by each member result in interesting (and sometimes bad) soundscapes.  I have my setlists organized with the channels in each bank having general categories (ie, clean, distortion, spacy, weird, etc).  It would be very useful to switch banks, and immediately have a new tone within my defined category (ie, channel), without having to move my foot twice, distracting from the vibe of the improv.

    -Dave

can you clarify what you mean by "tone" change? For example turning on a chorus is a tone change. You could go to th FS1-FS8 foot switch mode and go to a performance view. That way you can turn on and off fx amp models etc with one click. You could do a dual amp patch with an external expression pedal. You would then assign one amp to exp 1 and the other to exp 2. Fade them in and out blend them pan 'em. Lots of tonal possibilities and you never have to change a patch.
  4. A perfect example of something from which all Variax users can benefit, not just DR users.  If you guys get your forum, I'll just have to bookmark two Line6 forums.

Most certainly could benefit all who use an HD and Variax. But really....? "I'll just have to bookmark two Line6 forums?" If that is the worst of it, then you are doing pretty well! Trust me, I have no desire to work your bookmarking tabs to death, but I and others feel that it would be nice to have a forum that is dedicated to The Dream Rig. I'm sorry if that places an over the top bookmarking burden on those who follow and participate in the forum. What it boils down to is this, If one doesn't have all three components, (HD, Variax, DT50) they don't have the number of variables as those that do. Because of that, Dream Riggers should have a place to share and discuss those variables that are unique to the Dream Rig. Even if it means that one may have to get an email alert from another forum.

  5. Had my first "real" performance with the forumless Dream Rig last night. All in all it it was a success. We rocked a sold out house for 3 hours! I have some Dream Rig specific findings that I would love to share on a dedicated Dream Rig forum. But that ain't happening...yet! What I will say is that sound check would have been so much easier if I had HD Edit and Variax Workbench in a single program on my iPad. It would be incredibly helpful during performance as well. For example, I found that the room was a bit boomy during sound check. I had a great tone through the HD 500 and the DT50 and when I roll back the bass, I lost the quality of the tone. I pretty much use various modified spank models on my JTV69. So what I did was hook up my laptop, opened workbench and slid the pickups toward the bridge a scosh. Bam! Booming gone tone compromised very little. During the performance, how cool would it be to be able to teak the gain of your tube screamer or roll up some bottom on your eq or change out a pickup without having to bust out your laptop! Just mount the iPad on the mic stand and there go!

I'll tell you more when our forum is up and running!

  6. I am playing now the DR since early 2011 and I am gigging with it. I have also posted several Threads on the old DR-Forum, because I initially (and still) believed in a separate forum for DR-user.

But all in all: there are several pros and cons. Let me point out my thoughts to it:

Yes, you can say that it always affects one component (for shure). But this is only half of the (my) truth: I found out that it often affects TWO components. It is very often the POD HD AND either the DTXX OR the JTVXX, because the POD HD is the hub for the Dream rig (it controls also the JTV and the DT-amp). So I found myself sometimes posting the SAME issue on the POD HD AND either on the JTV OR the DT-Forum.

Yes, you can say that with more forums you may loose control of the already existing overload of information. I personally get the new Threads to my E-Mail account, so I am on spot. I don't think that is really in issue.

Another aspect I figured out is that the way I am using the JTV, the HD5000 and the DT50 is different as if I would use it, if I integrate only one of these into another guitar rig. Especially my presets on the POD HD (this is the hub) are not at all comparable to any other presets I would imagine just using the POD HD and / or a DT-amp. This has developed over the last 2 1/2 years. Especially how to control the Dream Rig via POD HD or over the JTV-knobs is something I feel a lack somehow.

Another aspect are new users which are buying the complete DR: clearly speaking a lot of them I think are lost when starting (like me initially). A DR-Forum could be a serious kick-starter to overcome a hard learning curve which it is in my opinion.

Although issues it may affect only one or often two parts of the DR, user want to have a "HOME BASE" - being part of a community of proud DR-user - RIGHT ?????????????????

Finally the most speaking point to me which points to a DR-Forum are the user feedbacks here: PEOPLE WANT IT !

Now That's What I'm Talkin' 'Bout!

    AMEN!

    Bring It!

  7. I agree with phil_m. Splitting off into another forum might mean we in this forum miss out on questions about individual components from which we might benefit. I follow so many forums already that I prefer not to add another one. I'm fine with reading about DR questions in this forum.

    That's a fair argument.

A global search of the forum will get you any info about individual components. So you really won't miss out. I disagree with phil_m on one point. While the vast majority of tweaking is on the pod itself, hooking up the Variax through the Workbench and your Pod and your DT or L2t/L3t is a whole different and unique tweaking ordeal. And because there aren't as many of us Dream Riggers as the rest of the forum participants, it's even more important that we have our own sub forum because I find that getting answers to specific Dream Rig questions difficult. Pod questions are one thing, but pod answers may be completely different when using a Variax and a DT.

I found a great way to double up a single coil and a lipstick pickup in the neck position of a Rickenbacher body.I run them in parallel. I blend the Variax mags with the Rickenbacher using the exp2. In the pod, I use a Gibtone amp full. But I switch the the A/B to A and switch to Triode instead of pentode. All through the VDI, which I had made for me by a guy at my local computer store. It cost me a lot less than the Line 6 and I got it in a custom length and color. I digress, I also connect a 1/4 inch out of the Variax into another amp just because I can. I find that the Variax pickups can be a bit thin sounding on their own, so I assign the gain of the Gibtone to the tone knob of the Variax. I can roll up warmth when I need it. Also, turn down the master dep on the Gibtone, roll up the volume on the lipstick pickup and set the volume pot control @ 250. It's pretty sweet. I have a whole bank set up with this patch. Patch "A" is set to an open G tuning, patch "B" is set to an open blah blah tuning..... You get the point. I really want to share my findings with this set up. I want to share my tones.....

    But...

    Where do I post this?

If you don't have a Variax, my pickup choices are meaningless to you. If you don't have a DT, who cares if I stick my Pentode up my A/B and out my Triode. Who cares about changing turnings on a preset basis if you ain't rockin the The Dream Rig?

Yes, I am talking about individual components, so I guess I could post my Variax stuff on the Variax forum and my DT stuff on the DT forum and my pod stuff on the pod forum. Or we can have a Dream Rig sub forum where all Pod, DT, and Variax questions are asked and answered under the common understanding that we are talking about The Dream Rig and what works well for that particular setup.

    Can I get an AMEN!?!

  8. This makes me think of a feature the Vetta amps had, which would be pretty useful on the dream rig.  The vetta had a master treble/bass section, which you could use to adjust for room changes and fletcher-munson curves.

When you say "the dream rig" are you referring to the actual dream rig or just to the DT50?

  9. So, I've got this incredible new rig. It is the Line 6 flagship amp. It is called the DT50. I have a 2x12 model which is the largest and loudest and most expensive amp combo that Line 6 sells. I also have a Pod HD 500 which is the newest and most powerful and expensive foot controlled fx processor that Line 6 makes. I also have a JTV 69 which is this incredible guitar that can change tunings and change from a Strat to a Les Paul to a Sitar at the flick of a switch. Together, these powerful individual pieces make up what Line 6 markets as  the Dream Rig. With this rig you can change guitars, tunings, amp models and fx on a preset by preset basis.

    Guess what it doesn't have?......

    A FORUM!!!!!!!!!

WE WANT A FORUM! WE WANT A FORUM! WE WANT A FORUM!

    What do we want?...

    A FORUM!!!

    When do we want it?.....

    NOW!

  10. That was my idea also.

The problem remains the behavior of the amp that it completely different from home using to live application (I don't use Low volume mode because it limitate too much the tone range, but even normal mode at low volume is different)

But the advantage you take from amp response is priceless at the end, because you have the right punch to emerge in the instruments mix.

I just need to understand the relation between this two ways of playing and adjust it.

If what you mean by "home using" and "live application" is playing with the volume low and playing with the volume high respectively, then, YES, there is a big difference in what the amp will do. Which is why I made the point of mentioning that you need to find a place to teak your settings "At Volume" meaning, the volume turned up as if you are playing live. jws1982 mentioned the same thing:

......You have to set up your patches at full volume when doing it this way, but it's worth it.

Every amp is going to be different from room to room. so you may have to make some minor adjustments to basic amp eq and possibly reverb. But if you have set everything up at volume, it shouldn't be that difficult to dial in a great tone no matter what room you are playing in.

  11. Ah ha. So I am using a DT50. What I find is certain frequencies sound better with different amp models. For example, I was attempting to dial in a good Plexi tone. Not realizing that the output settings were global, I started messing around with them. I dialed in this sweet Plexi tone. To my horror, my other finely tuned presets sounded terrible. Which is why I wanted to know the default settings. But now that I am back to the default settings, my current patches sound good but the plexi sounds like crap!

Back to the Plexi drawing board!

It's a global setting because it is designed to tweak the HD500 output tonal characteristics to that of external gear - a particular guitar amp. Each guitar amp/cab has its own characteristics and this setting permits you to get the best match that you can between the HD500 and the specific amp. It doesn't depend on the specific HD500 preset, but on the external amp. Once it is set it should only need to be changed when you switch external amps - not presets. For individual presets you use the internal HD500 amp/cab/FX settings.

  12. I think its best to let your ears make the final call. In a live situation, I only use a couple of amp models. The Gibtone is a pre and the Blackface is full. That works for me pretty well. Now I am experimenting with a Plexi and I am starting with the full model. Remember, when using full models, there is more fine tuning available to you. Adjusting the Sag, Hum, Bias Bias X along with the Early Reflection and other cab options gives you the opportunity to explore some good stuff. You just gotta find the time to tweak and a place to tweak at volume!

  13. I guess I can't post a YouTube link. But if you look up Dream Rig Tips and Tricks # 2, it helped me a lot with setting up dual tones.

New Dream Rig Owner here JTV 59 HD500 DT25 - loving the tones, but not the learning curve.

    for example

When I save a preset and then go back to it later ....the Exp pedal positions are not saved to where I had them in the preset, they are where ever they are physically at the time I go back to that preset.

I am using EXP 1 for Volume and EXP 2 for various effects parameters.

Shouldn't they automatically be set where I saved them until I engage( touch) the pedal .

    PS

I still have yet to figure how create dual amp settings and split the acoustic signal to FOH and other signal to DT25 ( via Link6)

and sometimes my VAriAX guitar setting is 'greyed out' and I cannot change the guitar choice

Not finding much information on operations on Dream rig system as a whole unit , or am I not looking in the right place. Lots of splintered info out there. But I seems to me if tey are marketing the dream rig as a whole system there should be more specificity of information on here - or out there,
