  1. :D  I think my house is the culprit on most of this with picking up RF/EMI- and it really increases in this setup when I am in gain channels.

Yes, on the Clean Channel it basically can be a passthrough of the signal volume and tone. No added noise of note.

I have the 1/4 OUT as Instrument level and 0 db.

What I do not understand is if I setup a simple preset such as:

Compressor>808> and then add a Noisegate > to Output why:

    1) There is extreme added noise when using the GAIN channels of CA Trip

    2) The Noise Gate which I added has little effect.

I have the B Gain Channel set to Classic which is lower gain than the C Gain Channel which I have set to Modern.

It gets worse as you add gain. Helicopter sound in background and increased hiss, etc.

As I said- it works fine in 4CM with one Noisegate at modest settings after the EFX Loop block in the 4CM preset.

Because gain adds compression... both from the top and bottom; peaks are squished, and quiet stuff is raised in volume.  IOW, that really quiet noise you hear on a clean channel is raised in volume (significantly).  Apparently this is a hi gain amp?

  2. I didn't see it mentioned, but make sure that the amp and Helix and anything else in the electrical connection loop (i.e. a computer connected by USB, effects in loops, etc) are all plugged into the same (properly grounded) outlet.  Otherwise you'll likely get a ground loop and lots of noise.

    How old is your home?

You may want to have a knowledgeable electrician come in and check the grounding in your home.

  3. Best to try 'em all.

I now have a pair of L2's and an Alto TS210.  Lately I've been using the Alto as a floor monitor and I used the L2's as a PA on poles at a recent show.  I have a small 3 by 6' rug I put under the monitor to damp the bass coupling when on a hard floor.  Although the Alto isn't as bad as the L2's because it rests at a higher angle in monitor mode than the L2's do.  I found the L2's sound better standing on end than in monitor mode on a hard floor (jamming in a large open room with hardwood floors and not much treatment). The rug has seemed to help that.

The L2's sound great as a PA on poles.  This last show was in a small church reception room (40' x 30' maybe with a 30' ceiling).  Another band came on later, really loud, a Marshall with a double 4x12 stack and drums and bass.  They used the PA for vocals, and they easily kept up with plenty of headroom still.

  4. There's nothing to fix. You can set the Guitar In's impedance manually, have it automatically change to match the first block on path 1A, assign its value to a footswitch, assign its value to a snapshot, and/or assign its value to a preset. The only thing Helix doesn't do is dynamically go down the line of 32 blocks and compensate for every possible combination of block bypasses, which, as we've discussed, would slow preset switching and cause minor audible clicks every time certain blocks are turned on and off.

Thanks for discussing this (again).  We sometimes know not the consequences of that which we ask...

  5. I suspect this is exactly why it's been held up. That and the popular outcry from the user community is always about more amps and effects, and it's not clear to me how much of the user base this would be useful to, so it's questionable how much of a priority it is in the feature list based on demand. As to why people would downvote it...that's just a mystery. If it's not something you would use it doesn't impact you for it to be there.

Ben gave quite a long post on the subject a while back (check out TGP and search his posts) In the end, it seemed like he pretty much figured out a good way to get it done. My bet is we won't see it till 3.0 (if ever), but I think it will make it if Ben can make it work. It's been a highly requested feature for a long time across multiple products. It may be time sometime soon.

Read some of the comments there, seems as if there is some belief that the downvoting is being done out of spite. Theres seems to be this thing that anyone down voting is public enemy #1 as if it shouldnt be allowed.

Im downvoting because i dont want L6 wasting time here when there are so many other things that helix needs, that are more important. The result of this mixing pre/power amps is going to be far less impactful than what people think. On paper it sounds great and with hardware there'd be appreciable differences, but all this does in the softworld is make the rabbit hole a little bigger for those who enjoy going down it. Sure i see the other benefits the poster outlined and thats cool, but there are some important things already not being addressed.

The question was asked, you answered it.

I think most people believe up voting what you want prioritizes things effectively. Obviously, you want to be even more proactive in directing their development priorities. I think you can understand why some people might take it personally. But they shouldn't.

  6. Why are some people downvoting the Independent pre and power amp blocks idea submission? Why would anyone not want this?

And, yeah, it's not like you would HAVE to use it.  They'll still leave in the blocks as they are.

  7. Don't know, and I don't know why it's not done yet...

If you've read any of the posts on it, it's not exactly easy.  There is a lot of interaction between a preamp and poweramp, and there will have to be some thinkin' to figure out how to deal with that, and some compromises.

But Ben has said he's got some ideas on how to get it done.

  8. Prior to getting the LT, my last major purchase was a Boss RC-300 Loopstation.  A more recent, but less major, purchase was an Electro-Harmonix Key-9.  In hindsight, this seems very fortuitous.  I'm thinking that these two devices can form the basis for a very powerful combination with the LT.

Of course, my plan at the moment is to concentrate on learning the LT, getting familiar with it, and dialing in the tones I want for the music I want to play.  But I'm thinking that the RC-300 will give me additional inputs beyond what the LT has, as well as giving me the ability to create very intricate backing tracks.

The Key-9 gives me sounds that the LT isn't (yet?) capable of - the ability to make my guitar sound like a keyboard or steel drum.

Just wondering, has anyone tried using an external looper hooked into one of the send/return loops, in addition to a looper block (i.e. can you use both at once in a preset)?

I'm thinking having the Key-9 between the guitar and the LT, with the RC-300 on one of the send/return loops, could be a very powerful combination.  I also very much covet the EH Superego+... (someday)

Yes, works great (I use a TC Ditto X2)

Sure, why not?  Could get a bit confusing, though :)

  9. Oops!! :)

That's ok, @Frank Ritchotte just posted yesterday that 60 people don't like him....  How that could EVER happen, I have no clue :)

Yes, volume does not need to be that loud... next step for good feedback is compression... either through higher gain or a compressor.

  10. My kids were raised on classic rock, blues, and jazz. They already own a lot of Fender gear (amps and guitars). My '71 Strat (4-bolt neck) was kind of legendary as they were growing up. The younger one is the lead guitarist, he cut his eye teeth on Hendrix, Vaughan and others. Yeah, I think they know what they're getting...

    :)

  11. Well,  not selling any guitars, and DEFINITELY not selling the '65 SR!!  No, that will go to my younger son (the two boys have a great band together).  Just selling some "extra" stuff I don't use, like a Vox VT-20+, an extra snare drum, extra hi-hats, stuff like that.

I will say, I've had a couple looks at the download page, and I am stumped!  Gonna do a bit of searching in the forums to figure out what I need to download first, but first thing will be to boot up and see what version is on the LT itself...

Well, I hope your kids appreciate what they are being given ;)

    What be stumping you?

  12. Hmm, not sure where I got that then. After tweaking around with it, it sure sounds like one on my strat (although I have never played a real one personally). Just goes to show no matter what you call something, if it sounds good to you...then is sounds good.

Well, because it has often been described as "Dumble-ish"... Dumble amps (and other boutique-y amps) were basically created using a similar process to that @benadrian described.  Started with a Fender circuit and went from there.

  13. There is a handful of Line 6 people on TGP contributing meaningful content. If you reconfigure your TGP preferences to display 100 posts per page, each page provides many more posts with easy scrolling with reduced successive page loading.

Or you can just find the users, go to their profile pages, and peruse all their posts...

  14. I just checked and all outputs, except any you have selected in the Outputs (in Tuner mode screen), are muted in the Tuner mode. But, even if you select XLR output in the Tuner screen, that just means the guitar will be sent to the XLR outputs. The Mic will still be muted.

Not having the Mic mute, while tuning your guitar, makes perfect sense. Sounds like a great idea for IdeaScale.

Hearing your guitar while you are tuning makes no sense.

True for most situations, but not completely true.  But then, I think for that you can turn off "mute while tuning".  Sometimes I might still want to listen for that beat even when I'm using an electronic tuner... of course, that only works in the studio, would never hear lollipoop in the context of a band.

  15. That would be exactly what they should do.

Nobody uses the same effects. So all of those presets that are just overdone with effects are useless. BUT...presets of the amp models themselves with different cabs and such all set up to go (like a real amp would be in the music store) would be nice.

I'm thinking that most guitar players are like me...I want to hear the amps. And then add in my own effects.

Right now to hear the amps you just have to create a new preset and start plugging in amps and cabs...but the first thing a person does when they first turn on the Helix is plug into it to play.

And if it were a selection of amp and cab presets already set up...that would sound a LOT better than those effect laden monstrosity presets (okay, I'm being over-dramatic in that description...lol)

I think the idea of the "overdone" presets is... Not to make "usable" presets, but to "showcase" particular effects and routings.  As easy as the Helix is to use, there's no way you could ever write a manual on how to use every single function.  And nobody would read it anyway.  Not only that, as far as making "usable" presets, NOBODY will ever be happy with everything or anything.  They know that.  Even the simplest stuff will lollipop off bunches of people.  You don't have to keep those Factory Setlists, you can delete them all and use the space for whatever you want.  To me, the presets are examples of what can be done.  I use them as such, but never even THINK to use them stock.

  16. OP here.

Pretty interesting info here.Learning some new things for sure.

Still working on learning the Helix.

Getting some very good Marshall and Vox tones now.

Bottom line for me here- and this is strictly my opinion......

Most all of the core amp factory stock presets sound like as$.

With more than the normal tweaking they start to shine, but whoever made the factory presets to demonstrate the basic amp tones needs to go back to modeler preset school.

Overall, I was deciding between this unit or getting an AXE FX AX8 to use for an on the floor unit and for effects only with my tube amp.

Already have an AXE FX II XL.

Going to keep the Helix for now and see where L6 goes with it.

ALL of the factory presets were created with... whatever guitar the creator was using at the time to make the preset.  The Helix is so sensitive that this will make a difference to other guitars....  Hence, Line 6 has trademarked the term.... "All Presets Suck "

Really... Go check DI's posts :)

  17. Hi all,

I'm running guitar through the 1/4" output and vocals out the XLR output on the Helix. I've noticed that tuning seems to mute any signal which isn't the selected tuner input/output.

I'm able to unmute the 1/4" outputs so I can hear guitar while tuning but doesn't seem to be a way to hear vocals. A bit annoying for communicating to band or audience while tuning. Am I missing something? Probably be an easy feature to implement?

    Cheers,

    Graeme

I get it, you want to use the mic while tuning.... I'm not in front of my unit right now, I'll check it out myself when I get home.

Is it a requirement to hear your guitar while tuning, too?

Just want to check your wording there.... I assume you have your guitar connected to the Guitar IN (not 1/4 in out), and a mic connected to the mic in... Or are you using an LT so you're doing something "weird"?  (I have the floor)
