  1. I've been wondering if it would eventually be possible to change the effect/amp block to a different effect/amp via snapshots within a single preset. Your chorus could change to a univibe with the press of a button. This would make the 6 block limit more palletable to some of those who would prefer more.

  2. If you want to control the Variax with the footswitches on the Helix, you need a VDI cable.

You could use the Line 6 Link to go between the Helix and Powercab, but you can't control the IRs/speaker models in the PC via L6 Link (yet) so that is not all that important... you could just use a regular 1/4" or XLR cable into the regular inputs of the Powercab.

    Enjoy your new gear!

  3. The four cable method (using HXFX and your amp's effects loop) with an EQ or compressor (or some other cleanish boost) after the preamp of your high gain amp is really the best way to get clean volume increase without changing the sound. Any boosts added before the preamp will only saturate the sound, especially at high gain, and not yield much in the way of a volume boost.

Isn't this what the instants are? I use those to control an rjm unit.

Instants? If you mean "stomp mode", then yes that's what I am currently using, but I am  missing the benefits of snapshots. Mainly being able to use multiple switches control the same blocks. I don't want to have to go between snapshot and stomp mode to change presets on my Sy300 and bypass the synth and turn on an amp and a couple other blocks.   I want to be able to do that by stepping on one switch.

I seem to have misunderstood the problem. I use a Focusrite Scarlett 18i20. In the Windows Sound app I've disabled Helix, and set the 18i20 as the DEFAULT device. Regardless of whether I'm rebooting, reconnecting, or simply switching devices, Helix only takes control if it's enabled as the DEFAULT device. Is your Audiobox set as the DEFAULT device?

Yes sir. Audiobox is set as the default device.

I appreciate all the tips so far.

Nothing is fixing it but as I said its really just a minor nuisance more than anything else.

While you have the Helix plugged in, right click on the speaker icon in the tray and go to playback devices. You'll probably see that the Helix is set as default there. Set something else to default (while the Helix is plugged in) and it should stop doing that, I believe.

I like your thinking! I just tried this, however, and when I reconnected Helix after changing the default, the Helix took over output duties once again.

  7. This is more of a Windows Question, but how do I stop Windows from automatically changing my output device every time I plug in the Helix, or the Boss SY-300, or my Blackstar ID amp. Any time I plug any of these devices into my computer, they automatically become the current output device.

I have looked for settings to keep using my preferred output device (Audiobox USB Interface) until I manually change it to something else, but I couldn't find any such setting.

It's not a super big deal but it is kind of a PITA in that it interrupts workflow when I connect devices to my computer.

    Anyone have any  suggestions?

oK well understand it better after the last post.  If I am correct the IRs are a building block of the preset that GD is putting together.

I can't really mess with them.

    Thanks

In Helix, IRs are usually guitar cabinet sims. They will replace the "cab" blocks in your signal chain.

However, some of GDs IRs are really custom "eq" blocks, to be used in conjunction with a "cab" block or another IR used as a speaker cab sim.

Really since you are just starting, I would stay away from IRs for a bit until you get the hang of using the Helix with the stock cabs.

  9. I had a successful update, and  followed the instructions to the letter. No new distortions. What'd I do wrong?

I seem to remember an additional step to the update process where I had to restart Helix while holding a couple switches down, but I don't want to do that this time because it wasn't in the instructions.
