  1. There’s an option on the tuner screen to send the guitar signal to an output (such as Send 1). I use this method with my strobe tuner. Better than a send/return block that you’d have to add to each preset.

Really? That sounds like a great option! How is that set up?

    Thanks

  2. Just to add to my monologue, here's a little sound snippet of what I came up with to mimic the Kilobyte. Granted I haven't crossed referenced them since I put this together but this sounds pretty good. I included some of the fun self oscillation mockup I came up with, it can keep going forever! If anyone is interested I'll be happy to share the patch.

    That was pretty awesome

  3. Amen...there are tons of guys out there, even good players, who've spent years not really knowing what they actually sound like. Personally, I don't miss my "amp in the room" at all. Consistency is priceless. For me, reproducible results are far easier to obtain running direct, with just a floor monitor for stage volume. No futzing around with mics and minimal (if any) EQing at the board. I'll never go back to an amp.

ditto.... I'm sick of setting up my amp, mics and Eq'ing every time. No more amps for me, at least for live playing.

But I do have to say, headphone quality will have a huge impact on what you hear. The cheapos can't handle the sound unless played at very low volume.

  4. Call me crazy but I'm about to reshape the neck on my 89F. Mainly the heel which I feels could afford a little more reach into the higher frets.

Does anyone know what kind of finish is used on the JTV89F neck? Korean made. I could just refinish the while neck but if I could match the finish a spot blend would be a lot easier....and faster! I'll post pictures of the process.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  5. As I am updating to version 2.12 I was wondering.... there's always new amps with every update, Guitar and Bass. More than I'll ever need or even have time to try out. But are there any acoustic amps due in the future OR there are some already and I missed it?

In any case, besides acoustic IR's what else would be a good option to just use the Helix with a regular acoustic guitar?

  6. malhavok you said it!

Bottom line for church: if people are worshipping it doesn't matter if your solo can be heard or not. Still, take all the good advice others have offered in this thread in your quest to approach your craft with excellence.

Every building is different, everybody's ear is different, and everyone's taste's are different.

I was a technical director at a church for 6 years. I have been play guitar and running sound for 30 years. I have used IEM, stage monitors and amps, and amps hidden off stage, etc... hence my love for the Helix, I have a love hate for IEM's. Hoping the Helix will cure that, because I miss having my amp on stage with me for some gigs. I have only used the Helix once with IEM's and I liked it. The other times with my amp, and can't wait to try out my new L2t.

I have played in many church's here in Southern Cali and ran sound in many, have installed and taught how to run their systems. Have pushed on "Your room needs to be treated!"

Many churches have sound people that are volunteers, and many never trained properly. Every church I visit I can't help myself, I stand or sit or walk by the sound booth and watch how they mix, so many times I want to say, "That's a vox lead, bring her up!" "That's a guitar lead bring him up!" or my most common one, why can't I hear all the instruments?" because when I mix you will hear everyone! I want everyone on that stage to shine. Sometimes it is talking to the musicians and have them learn to compliment each other. I.E Dynamics.

And if it is a church I have taught or know the engineer, I will comment, and then all of a sudden there it is, so sometimes it is just the engineer just needs to be let known as they are paying attention to something else. Of coarse there are some that give excuses, and many times it is the room... So many run Bass way to loud, wide, I will suggest tightening it up, EQ and lowering the volume.

So many churches I visit, I don't hear rhythm or lead guitarist in the mix. I have been told more times than I can count in the last 19 years of playing worship, that my guitar wasn't heard. It has been a struggle, but I also have learned to watch the congregation and are they being moved, then it was good even if they didn't hear me.

Now last night at a church I hadn't visited yet, they had the greatest mix! I heard all instruments, very pro setup, great auditorium built for music and speaking, great musicians great sound engineer! I love when I don't have my ear's playing critic and just enjoy and engage!

    So for you watch4king:

I have designed my patches to have EQ mid boost and volume boost, anywhere from a 3db to 5db boost.

And having someone I trust in the congregation to give me the nod or thumbs up if they hear me. As I have learned when I'm on stage with IEM's I can't hear the true level changes in the FOH. Actually I have tried to have this for the past 25 years.

Also work with the sound engineer, let them know they are in the band! They need to know their instrument too, and they need to know the songs and arrangement of the songs too. When I was the TD I used to stand next the engineer and point out solo coming up... or that vox that has been background vox in all the songs is now lead vox in this song. They should know this or taught to know it. And they need to learn to EQ and know when to use it instead of volume at times.

Also if you haven't already, purchase Glenn's or Freeman's patches and look at how they have used the EQ boost and volume boost or snapshots to change EQ or volume.

I purchased both of their work to learn from and see what they have done, just little tweaks to your desire and perfect!

I love reading all your posts Helix lovers! Great advise!

    Rock on!

    Very insightful reply. Thank you

  7. Mids...if you're setting up your patches with headphones, or through a similar (or even the very same PA) rig, but at lower volumes, you'll almost always have issues trying to use those same tones at stage volume. When you get loud, the lows and highs become more prominent, the mids disappear, and your guitar vanishes from the mix. You need to tweak your patches as close to stage volume as you can.

Having a sound guy that doesn't know what he's doing isn't gonna help either...

Thanks for the input. Do you suggest Global EQ settings or per patch? Would you mind giving me an example?

  8. Hey guys,

I play in a small church band. Drums, acoustic guitar, keys a violin and my Helix/Variax rig (and vocals!). I play straight into the PA and the sound is pretty decent. The problem I'm having is my guitar isn't really cutting through the mix. The sound guy may not be the best and I have tried to ask him to keep the lead guitar sound in mind but to no avail. I'm starting to think some EQ'ing may help but I'm not really sure what to do.Intro's or if its just me and the acoustic guitar sound good but if the whole band is playing my leads get drowned by the other instruments... This is a church band and of course I don't want to have to blast the electric guitar just to cut through but I'd like to be heard. We play with in-ear monitors so as far as I can tell everything sounds perfect to me but the audience is not hearing the same as the band. Its what I've been told and what I've heard from the recordings.

    Any words of advice?

  9. I was one of the people that found the tuner not to my liking when I first got the Helix so I plugged in my guitar to a Boss tuner. Then 2.0 update came in and the tuner GREATLY improved. Its still jumpy but a heck of a lot better. I have faith Line6 will keep on working on it as on everything else. I wish it was like my Boss tuner but hey, it does the job....

  10. I was all set to put a 25' btpa cable on the card when I noticed that it was $39+ and the shipping was another $11 (minimum). That's a fifty-buck cable at that point, and the Amazon/Line 6 one with free shipping (and I can get it even cheaper with coupons at Musician's Fiend) is still just $29.99. That makes the btpa cable 60% more expensive, even if there really is a 30% improvement in quality of the cable itself.   Backed away. Not worth it.  Unless someone here can convince me.

I think someone should talk to btpa.com about their default shipping costs.

I think their default shipping may be higher but you have the choice at checkout to select USPS shipping. Mine came to $26 shipped.

    Thanks Steve

I ended up ordering the BTPA cable as you recommended. Will report back once I get it!

  13. I struggled with the first version of the tuner also but this 2.0 seems to have made it a lot better. I feel tuning with a 12th fret harmonic works a lot better IMO.
